Varicose Veins May Be Deadly, Says JAMA

Varicose Veins May Be Deadly, Says JAMA:  Varicose veins are just another harmless sign of aging, right?  After all, they’re kind of a rite of passage into the later years in life.  However, a recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveals otherwise.

Varicose Veins May Be Deadly, Says JAMA

We wake up one morning, look down at our legs and wonder about those dark purple streaks.  When did this happen?  After all, they weren’t there when you were younger, right?  Well, they’re called varicose veins.  In fact, according to WebMD, “Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs and ankles. They usually aren’t serious, but they can sometimes lead to other problems.”

How Your Veins Work

So, what causes varicose veins anyway?  In order to explain that we need to go over some basic anatomy.  You see, your veins have valves in them.  These valves never completely close.  In fact, these valves act as pockets where your body stores extra blood.  When your body needs more blood, the valves open allowing the extra blood to flow.  Why would your body need more blood?  Your body needs more blood during times of increased physical demand. When these valves fail, blood pools at the bottom of the legs, feet and ankles.  This makes the feet and ankles the most common site for purple veins.

The Study

The study took place in Taiwan.  It included about 425,968 adults.  The research was so strong that JAMA published it in 2018.  The research found a strong association between varicose veins and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  A DVT is a clot deep in the leg veins.  By itself varicose veins are not a problem.  However, if that clot breaks free, the clot can cause a blockage in the blood supply to the lungs or brain.  This results in either a pulmonary embolism in the lungs or a stroke due to poor blood supply to the brain.  The consequences of either result in death or permanent impairment.

Take a Preventative Approach

If you suffer from varicose veins, don’t wait for either life threatening situation.  Take control of the situation and do everything in your power to support healthy vascular function.  In fact, enzymes play a key role in helping the valves in your veins work properly.  Together, with the right diet, we can help your body support healthy working valves in your veins.

Do you or a loved one have varicose veins?  Are you concerned about your cardiovascular health?  Perhaps you’re worried about the long-term consequences.    Would you like to find out how to support healthy heart function safely and effectively without drugs or surgery?  If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120.  I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.  I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis, which is trusted by both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  This will help me determine if you are a good candidate for care.  If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
