Supplement Fads cost Americans Millions, and lack research

Supplement Fads.  Did you ever notice that people buy vitamins as trends or fads?   In fact, isn’t magnesium the latest miracle cure?  Before that it was red yeast rice.  Even longer ago, it was probiotics and fish oil.  Sadly, these trends often outpace any research.  As a result, you’re playing roulette with your health.

Supplement fads.

While some of these supplements, like fish oil, have strong merits, many do not.  In fact, the only studies backing red yeast were quite flawed.  In the study, experts took the active ingredient from red yeast rice, and gave patients dosages that were way beyond realistic.  Sadly, all other studies showed no benefit.  However, many flocked to it like it was a miracle cure long before the release of any research.  When you realize that over half of all Americans like you take supplements, it’s scary to think many people are wasting their hard-earned money.

Sometimes, people will make decisions based on preliminary studies.  However, these studies do not validate the supplement’s benefits.  Instead, they only state that the pills may show benefit.  However, experts need to conduct more valid studies to confirm the benefits.  These trends turn out to be the latest supplement fads.

The Real Problem

Why are Americans looking for that magic bullet?  Sadly, because the Standard American Diet is so poor, many turn to supplements.  They hope that the “magic little pills” will replace the nutrition missing from their food.  Unfortunately, this gives some the excuse to eat however they want.  In fact, sometimes this rationale is subconscious.  However, there is no supplement that can replace your food.  This includes the latest supplement fads.  In fact, some supplements can be dangerous.  For example, two huge studies in the 1990s found that beta carotene pills actually increased lung cancer. Likewise, a clinical trial published in 2011 found that vitamin E increased the risk of prostate cancer by 17 percent. However, I need to point out this study “picked on” a certain form of vitamin E, and other forms do not have this problem.

As a result, there’s not short-cut.  The best way to get valuable nutrition is from your food.  Additionally, the best sources are fresh fruits and vegetables.  While some supplements, like fish oil and vitamin D, do have strong merit, you can even get these in your food.  In fact, that’s the best place to get them.

Why We’re Different

So, I bet I know what you’re thinking.  “Come on Doc, you sell supplements too.”  And yes, I do.  However, the pills I sell are quite different.  You see, the pills I sell are enzyme supplements.  They help your body digest, absorb and use the valuable nutrients from your food.  If you get the nutrients from your food, you don’t have to pop pills hoping they will replace your diet.  Additionally, we only make recommendations after thorough testing.  Look at it this way.  Let’s say you want to build a house.  Your food is the wood, concrete, drywall, windows, etc.  The enzymes are the construction crew that will take those valuable materials and make something useful out of them.  Without enzymes, your body cannot use the vital nutrients from your food, or supplements for that matter.

Of course, our testing and solutions are scientific and based on sound medical principals.  In fact, many of my patients end up spending less money on supplements because they need fewer.

Chronic Calf Pain and Nutrition – When most people have pain in their calf, they usually seek orthotics, PT, or even chiropractic care.   As long as your problem is physical in nature, all of these are wonderful interventions.  Common physical causes included constant stress from work, or exercises, injuries or imbalances from stress or surgery.  But what if your pain keeps coming back?  This may be a sign your calf pain may come from nutritional problems.

In fact, here are some signs that your calf pain may come from nutritional problems…

  • Fatigue, or feeling tired all the time
  • Difficulty walking up or down the steps
  • Inability to complete activities of daily living
  • Inability to make dietary changes and stick with them

How to Tell

Often times this can be a sign that your body has difficulty processing and using vitamins and minerals.    If you are eating enough of these essential nutrients, it may be your body has trouble digesting, absorbing or using these precious vitamins and minerals.  It’s important to remember that your body needs enzymes in order to digest, absorb and use vitamins.  It’s also important to remember that vitamins are only co-enzymes.  In fact, they cannot do their job without the right enzymes in place.

OK, I know what you’re thinking.  How can I tell the difference?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we can perform objective tests based on sound medical principals to find where the actual source of stress exists.  Once we figure that out we can put a plan in place to make sure your body gets the vital nutrition it needs.  In addition, we can help your body properly digest, absorb and use those precious building blocks to health.

If your problem is mechanical in nature the right combination of chiropractic care, orthotics and home exercises may be the key.  We can help with that too.

plant nutrients
There are many vital plant nutrients – you won’t find them in meat.

Vital Plant Nutrients.  While meat is an essential food for most of use, we Americans tend to eat way too much of it.  Additionally, most of the meat in our country is not very healthy for a whole host of reasons.  And then there’s the controversial issue of morality.  That is, how these animals are being treated while they’re alive.  But today we’re going to switch gears and talk about some vital nutrients you can only get from plants.  That is of course, vital plant nutrients.

Here they are…

1.  Vitamin C – Cooked animal foods usually contain helpful amounts of many essential vitamins except vitamin C. This vitamin acts as a powerful antioxidant and a cofactor for many enzymes in your body.  Your connective tissue (ligaments, tendons and cartilage) also requires Vitamin C.

2. Quercetin – This chemical is one of the most common flavonoids.  As a result, high intake of which has been associated with lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease.  Rich plant sources of quercetin include apples, peppers, grapes, dark cherries and berries, tomatoes, cruciferous veggies, leafy green veggies, and citrus fruits as well as green tea.

3. Catechins – are bioflavonoids. Green tea catechins,  are widely studied for their health benefits.  They have been associated with healthy blood pressure, improved blood vessel function and lower blood cholesterol.  Many fruits and beverages are loaded with catechins, major sources of which include apples, pears, apricots, peaches, grapes, tea, and cocoa.

4. Hesperidin – Hesperidin is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid, a phytonutrient that acts as an antioxidant.  Animal studies indicate that this nutrient may support heart health and cancer prevention.   You find it in lemons and oranges.  However, the peel and membranes contain the highest amounts. You can also find it in grapefruit, plums, apricots, bilberry, green and yellow peppers, broccoli, and whole grains, such as buckwheat.

5. Cyanidin – Cyanidin is a pigment responsible for the bright colors of many fruits and vegetables. It has a reddish-purple color and acts as an antioxidant.  Studies have indicated that these may reduce the risk of heart disease, however; the evidence is still limited.  This ingredient is found in colorful fruits and vegetables, including many red berries, bilberry, grapes, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, elderberry, cranberry, loganberry, hawthorn, acai berry, and raspberry. It is also found in apples and plums, and red cabbage and onion.

It’s not Enough to Eat Them

While these nutrients are vital to your well being, it’s not the whole story.  The fact still remains that they are still merely fuel in your fuel tank.  And yes, you do need fuel in your fuel tank, but you also need a spark in your spark plug.  Enzymes provide that crucial spark.  In fact you need several “sparks” along the way.  First you need to ensure healthy digestion and absorption of these vital nutrients.  Secondly, you need to make sure your body can properly USE them.  Because if you eat them, but can’t use them, there’s still a problem.  This is where enzyme nutrition comes into play.  Enzyme nutrition uses sound medical principals to support healthy digestion, absorption and use of crucial nutrition.  On top of that, remember that vitamins are only co-enzymes.  That is they cannot do anything without the right enzymes in place.

Digestion is Important

Are you concerned about healthy digestion do you want to get the most out of your protein diet? If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.
