Omeprazole and Osteoporosis.  Before I start this article I’m afraid I have to apologize.  Why?  Because yet again I’m picking on our good friends known as Protein Pump Inhibitors (PPI’s).  For those of you following my blog, you already know of some serious risks that come from taking PPI’s.  They include constipation, which can lead to breast cancer according to a study by the Linda Loma Medical University.  But they also include increased risk of heart disease and heart failure, according to research in PLOS-1.  However, newer research shows it can also lead to osteoporosis.

In fact Americans spent over $9.5 billion in PPI’s in 2014 alone.  Of course this information comes from Consumer Reports.  The most popular PPI’s include omeprazole (Prilosec and Nexium) and lansoprazole (Prevacid). However what you may not realize is the hidden dangers in taking these meds long-term.   While I mentioned some of them earlier, I’ll go into new research showing they lead to osteoporosis.  And with osteoporosis already on the rise in America, the last thing we need is something else to help it along.

The Research

This information comes from a study published in the National Institute of Health, in March of 2015.  In the study subjects taking PPI’s showed two key differences over those taking placebo.  First of all, they had a much higher incidence of fractures due to weak bones.  And secondly, they had much lower levels of calcium in the blood.  In fact the study concluded that PPI’s do lower bone density.

Our Approach

While we do not treat acid reflux, enzyme nutrition can help support healthy function of your stomach and your overall digestion.  The key to enzyme nutrition is to provide the proper dietary changes with two types of enzyme supplements.  The first type supports healthy digestion by helping vital nutrients get past an incompetent digestive system.  The second type supports healthy function of organs or systems under the most stress.

Do you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux?  Are you reliant on PPI’s to manage your GERD?   Are you concerned about the risks?  We may be able to help.  Enzyme nutrition can help your stomach work properly for a happier, healthier you.  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

After many years of clinical practice, Dr. Marrone has forged a remarkable career as a practitioner, educator and lecturer.  His extensive knowledge of functional enzyme nutrition has made him a much sought after practitioner.  If you are suffering from health problems that nobody seems to have the answer to, or are sick and tired of the revolving door approach of modern medicine, give Dr. Marrone a call to set up a consultation.
