PMS and Water Retention

PMS and Water Retention – I had a question from a listener of my radio show.  Her question was “I thought PMS was a water retention problem, not a protein problem.”   Water retention is a symptom of PMS, but not the actual problem.

PMS and Water Retention – Yes water retention can be a common symptom of PMS and there are two reasons for it.  I’ll give you those reasons in a second, but to be clear water retention doesn’t cause PMS, it is a symptom of PMS.  The cause of PMS is a protein deficiency which essentially robs the cycle of the calcium it needs to carry out in a healthy manner.  Here are the reasons for water retention:

The most common cause of PMs and water retention is hormonal changes and imbalance due to the increase of estrogen that starts slowly in the premenstrual stage and is excessive in the follicular stage.  The luteal stage sees the estrogen diminish and progesterone increase which maintains an imbalance. This causes fluid to be retained in the feet, hand, legs and abdomen.  Another cause of water retention is the dehydration that can occur before and during the period but mostly before.  Women often do not drink enough water in these stages of the cycle. Dehydration always leads to water retention as the body tries to keep what it has. Finally if a woman has high sodium this will increase the fluid retention.

Diet is Key

Diet is a big factor in water retention during menstruation because of the many properties in food to retain or expel fluid and how you eat is as important as what you eat. Things to avoid include refined sugar. Avoid simple carbohydrates in favor of complex carbohydrates.  There should be plenty of fiber and lean protein as well. It is recommended that smaller meals be eaten 4-5 times a day instead of three large meals. Additionally, eat foods that have a lot of iron. It is also important to eat foods that have high amounts of water so that this fluid can help the kidneys to flush out all the fluid in the body. These foods include berries, watermelon, cucumbers and lettuce.  And where should your fiber come from – you’ve heard me say it a million times – FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

Our Approach

While we don’t treat diseases (including PMS and water retention), we do support healthy menstrual function.  This of course includes supporting a healthy cycle.  If the cycle is healthy, and has all of the vital nutrients it needs, it is much less likely to cause problems.  We accomplish this with a comprehensive approach.  First, chiropractic care can help maintain healthy nerve flow to the organs.  This helps those organs work properly.  Next, with the right combination of diet and enzyme supplements we can support healthy protein and calcium digestion, absorption and use.  Typically we will focus on protein, however each case is different.  For that reason we only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Do you suffer from severe symptoms from your cycle?  Does it affect your work, family life or active lifestyle?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

DAWC 038 Protein and PMS

Protein and PMS –

Protein and PMS – this is part two of the women’s health series of Dr. Andy’s Wellness Corner.   In this airing, Dr. Andy reviews the female cycle.  Then he goes into different approaches aimed at women’s health.  These include medical, natural and enzyme nutrition.  As promised, he also lists the most popular supplements used for supporting healthy women’s function.  Additionally, he includes side effects, effectiveness and contraindications.  He quickly reviews the medical approach and then delves into enzyme nutrition.

In this episode, Dr. Andy focuses on the enzyme nutrition approach to supporting a healthy pain-free cycle.  In fact, he delves into the importance of protein and calcium, which are often overlooked.  Furthermore, he ties everything together with an example showing how protein and calcium problems cause a host of health issues.  Lastly, he shows how this can be a better approach to supporting health over diagnosing and treating disease.

In the last part of this broadcast, Dr. Andy talks about political moves by the drug companies.  These drug companies classify health issues as a disease to gain a monopoly over their treatment.   At the same time, the promote it as a community service.  Learn how this sneaky trick hinders your rights and access to alternative forms of health care.  Also learn why it has no impact on how I use enzyme nutrition to help your body work the way it’s supposed to.

PMS – Are you like millions of other women who suffer from ailments related to your monthly cycle?  Do these problems become so severe they interfere with your work, play and family life?  It’s important to remember that you’re not alone.  In fact premenstrual syndrome affects millions of women worldwide.  In fact imbalances in women’s health can cause a wide range of symptoms including PMS.  These include crying spells, headaches, bloating, bowel problems, back pain, mood swings, irritability, depression or feeling down, and even severe cramping.  And that’s just naming a few.

Unfortunately, modern medicine really doesn’t have an answer to PMS.  Well, actually they do, it’s to cover up the symptoms with medication.  Beyond that they have no answers.  But what if I told you the key to supporting a healthy cycle?

The Key to a Healthy Cycle

So here it is, I’m going to tell you the key to a healthy cycle.  Of course when your cycle is healthy, you will not suffer the common symptoms of PreMenstrual Syndrome, or PMS.   Well, the key is calcium.  A healthy cycle actually requires calcium.  But wait, I know what you’re thinking.  I’m headed right over to the supplement store to pick up some calcium.  It’s good for bone health too.  Before you head out, understand that women who supplement with calcium are five times more likely to suffer from dementia or stroke.  You also increase your risk of cancer.  In fact the best way to get calcium is from your diet.

But you want to be more proactive about supporting a healthy cycle, to reduce the odds of PMS.  What do you implement?  Well, the answer is actually protein.  Why?  Because calcium is carried by protein.  So another important way to support a healthy cycle is to increase your protein intake.  However, be careful with soy.  Soy has chemicals in it that bind with estrogen receptors.  This can worsen your symptoms.  But what if your body has trouble digesting, absorbing or using protein?

Our Approach

While we don’t treat diseases (including PMS), we do support healthy menstrual function.

Healthy Fats Women’s Health.  Now I know this is going to be an odd topic.  After all, what woman wants to hear about fat?  However, fat is an essential component of many hormones that help your cycle run smoothly.  They can also greatly impact fertility, comfort during your cycle, and even menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms.  So if you’re a female concerned about women’s health then the right fats are crucial to your diet.

When a woman’s chemistry is out of balance, it can lead to a whole host of problems.  In fact they can range from headaches, brain fog, mood swings, irritability, cramping and even changes in discharge.   If you’re in your menopausal years, these we can also add fever, confusion and hot flashes to the mix.  Sometimes they even force you to miss work, play or family time.  When this happens, many of you turn to medications or hormone replacement.  And while they can provide relief, they have some serious complications.  In fact, these complications can even lead to cancer.  The other problem is that many health care providers will try to get the right ratio of hormones, ignoring that they may be elevating all hormones to an unhealthy level.

Our Approach

The health of your cycle and reproductive organs is a direct result of your ability to digest, absorb and use healthy fats. And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including PMS or menopause), I can help support healthy fat digestion, absorption and use. And of course this, in turn, promotes a healthy female cycle. I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about the women’s health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to subside? Are you missing out on work family or fun?
