Gut Healthy Foods and “Prebiotics”

Gut Healthy Foods.  Do you suffer from digestive problems?  You’re not alone.  In fact, over the counter digestive medications are the top selling drug in America.  While you’ve already read my previous articles on the dangers of these meds, I thought I’d mention some things that can promote healthy gut function.

Gut Healthy Foods.  In the past, you may have read my many blog entries on the dangers of certain digestive medications.   These include over the counter protein pump inhibitors and antacids.  If you missed those articles, they are readily available.

  1. Heartburn Medication Health Risks
  2. Heartburn Drugs Shorten your Life
  3. Omeprazole and Osteoporosis

While very thorough, these articles say nothing of the kidney problems and stomach infections that can arise from these dangerous medications.  In fact, the FDA has even listed these risks on their web site.  Furthermore, I’ve warned of the risks of certain types of foods like nuts and whole grains that contain agents that destroy probiotics and enzymes.  Of course, these probiotics and enzymes are crucial to support healthy digestive function.

What I have failed to do, however, is list some gut healthy foods you can eat that may promote healthy digestive function.  Well, it’s time to remedy that problem.  So here is a list of foods that help your digestion work properly.

Prebiotic Foods

Here is a list of “prebiotic foods”.  They are rich in the types of fiber that beneficial gut bacteria thrive on: onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, asparagus, beets, cabbage, beans, lentils, soybeans, whole wheat, oats, and bananas.  Fermented foods like kimchi, and natto also have strong prebiotic properties.

There is also a popular beverage that can support healthy digestion.  And no, there’s no way it’s soda or coffee.  in fact, it’s black tea.  Research shows that black tea also has a certain type of antioxidant that can improve your probiotic population. As stated earlier these types of food are known as prebiotics.  Prebiotics help promote the growth of healthy microorganisms and offer a host of other advantages.  If you’ve tried these gut healthy foods and need more help, you may be an enzyme nutrition candidate.

If you need more help

Do you suffer from any of these problems?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we will do a thorough evaluation to get a complete picture of your overall digestive health. Once we have the results, we will work with you in two ways.  Of course, it’s important to remember that our tests are based on sound medical principles.  First, we will coach you through dietary changes.  Second, we will also recommend the right natural enzyme supplements to support healthy digestion.  And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including digestive diseases), I can help your body break down food properly.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to ease? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Heartburn Drugs Shorten Your Life

Heartburn Drugs Shorten Your Life.  In fact the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published research on July 4th of 2017.  This research clearly outlines the many health risks that come from taking protein pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Prilosec and omeprazole.  If you follow my articles, you already know about some of them, which include cancer, kidney failure, osteoporosis, heart failure and disease and increased risk of certain infections.  According to the BMJ, we can now add pneumonia, dementia and bone fractures to the list.

According to  Consumer Reports, PPIs are one of the highest-selling drugs in the U.S. In fact sales were $9.5 billion in 2014.  Not only do they have some serious long term effects, they are also habit forming.  That is, once you start taking PPIs, your body develops a dependency to them.  In addition, the BMJ also concludes that people who used proton-pump inhibitors experienced a 25% heightened risk of death from all causes.  Consumers turn to this questionable drug to ease symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and GERD.

When questioned, AstraZeneca, a maker of two popular PPIs, made the following statement:
“We are confident in the safety and efficacy of Nexium and Prilosec when used in accordance with the FDA approved label, which has been established through numerous clinical trials,” said Alexandra Engel, a spokeswoman for AstraZeneca.  This company was not involved in the new study.

Our Approach

Your acid production is a direct result of your digestive health. And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including heartburn, acid reflux or GERD), I can help support healthy digestion. And of course this, in turn, promotes healthy stomach acid levels. I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about stomach health? Is your condition painful when it hits?  Are you missing out on work family or fun? Or are you constantly “popping” antacids or PPI’s?   If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
