DAWC 050 Scientific Holistic Health

Scientific Holistic Health.  There is an exciting new branch of health and wellness care out there.  In fact, maybe you’ve heard of it.  Furthermore it is growing in popularity with each passing year.  It is called Holistic Health.  However, trying to find the science in many holistic approaches can be difficult.  This is because many holistic practitioners practice a form of holism that involves “energy work.”

Before I continue, I want to be absolutely clear about something.   There is nothing wrong with “energy work” of it works for both the health care professional and the patient.  However, when I started my wellness career, I searched for a holistic approach that I could rely on science to explain.  In fact, this is one of the many reasons I landed on enzyme nutrition.

In this breakthrough episode, learn about the difference between the allopathic approach to crisis care, versus the holistic approach to wellness care.  You will also learn when each is appropriate.  After all, both philosophies have their place.

Furthermore, Dr. Andy will lead you through some clear examples showing the difference between allopathic intervention and a holistic way to support a properly working body.  In fact he even delves into some issues that are on the rise in our great nation.  These include issues with blood sugar, bone density and fatigue.

Magnesium, the latest craze…

Magnesium, it’s the latest craze.  A few weeks ago, my wife went in for her annual checkup.  After a thorough evaluation, the facility wanted to sell her some magnesium.  I looked up the research and found it support the opposite aspects of healthy function that my wife needed.  A week later, I did a health presentation.  Before and after the presentation, the audience was rumbling about the wonders of magnesium.  It seems that magnesium is the new miracle cure, or is it…

Magnesium is the latest trend, but is it right for you?

Magnesium seems to be the latest popular go to supplement.  Sadly, supplements follow fad trends just like fashion, music, and other forms of pop culture.  While there are benefits, there are also down sides.  The benefits are that we learn more about the ways a supplement may help support a healthy functioning body.  However, the down side is that the population blindly rushes to the store to take it, without knowing if it’s truly right for them.  It seems the need for hope has kept the old “snake oil” ideas alive.  And yes, I did say that to get your attention, there are situations where magnesium can support healthy function.  However, that does not make it a cure-all.

So, I know what you’re thinking.  It’s magnesium, it’s natural.  It can’t be bad, right?  It’s crucial to remember that just because something is natural does not mean it’s automatically harmless.  In fact, polar bear liver is totally natural, and high in vitamin A.  So, should we all eat polar bear liver?  Absolutely not.  It turns out that polar bear liver contains deadly amounts of vitamin A.  That’s right, if you eat polar bear liver, you will die of vitamin A poisoning.  And yet it’s 100% natural.

The Potential Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium has shown strong evidence to support healthy sleep habits, especially in the elderly.  Furthermore, a magnesium deficiency can cause migraine headaches.  However, I must urge caution here.  There are many many causes for migraines, so if it helps you, GREAT! But do not expect it to be a miracle cure.  There are even some sources that state magnesium can help your body’s ability to reduce inflammation.  Additionally, many mental health professionals are using it to support healthy mood to combat depression.  But it’s also important to note that there is not research on this.  One study (and I want to emphasize 1 study) found magnesium helpful in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.  Another study showed it may help with constipation by pulling water into the intestines.  However, any powdered substance will do draw water into the digestive tract.

Magnesium: the Side effects

Just because something’s natural does not mean it is free of side effects.  In fact, the side effects of magnesium include (according to Elsevier):

  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Unusual sweating
  • Breathing problems
  • Low body temperature
  • Unusually weak or tired
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

The role of Enzymes:

Even if magnesium is right for you, do you know what your body needs to make it work right?  That’s right, it’s enzymes.  Enzymes allow your body to properly use the vital nutrition it needs.  So how do you know what enzymes are right for you?  Different enzymes help your body perform different tasks properly.  As a result, your body requires specific testing to identify the source(s) of stress in your body.  Only then can the right combination of enzymes and dietary changes help support a properly working body.

Shin Pain and Nutrition

Chronic Shin Pain and Nutrition.  Do you suffer from chronic shin pain?  Have you tried PT, orthotics and chiropractic without success?  All of these are great therapies when your problem stems from physical stress.  But what if your problem was nutritional in nature?

Shin Pain and Nutrition – When most people have pain in their calf, they usually seek orthotics, PT, or even chiropractic care.   As long as your problem is physical in nature, all of these are wonderful interventions.  Common physical causes included constant stress from work, or exercises, injuries or imbalances from stress or surgery.  In fact, the most common physical shin injury is called “shin splints”.  But what if your pain keeps coming back?  This may be a sign your calf pain may come from nutritional problems.

In fact, here are some signs that your calf pain may come from nutritional problems…

  • Limited ankle movement, especially when pointing the toes down
  • Deep bone or join pain
  • Painful or weak teeth
  • Swollen feet or ankles
  • Recent trauma, accident or injury
  • Frequent infections

How to Tell

Often times this can be a sign that your body has difficulty processing and using proteins for tissue repair.    If you are eating enough of these essential nutrients, it may be your body has trouble digesting, absorbing or using these precious vitamins and minerals.  It’s important to remember that your body needs enzymes in order to digest, absorb and use protein.  It’s also important to remember that vitamins are only co-enzymes.  In fact, they cannot do their job without the right enzymes in place.

OK, I know what you’re thinking.  How can I tell the difference?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we can perform objective tests based on sound medical principals to find where the actual source of stress exists.  Once we figure that out we can put a plan in place to make sure your body gets the vital nutrition it needs.  In addition, we can help your body properly digest, absorb and use those precious building blocks to health.

If your problem is mechanical in nature the right combination of chiropractic care, orthotics and home exercises may be the key.  We can help with that too.

Foot Pain, Fatigue and Nutrition.  Do you suffer from chronic pain on the bottom of your foot?  Custom orthotics not working?  Are you always tired?  If so, your foot pain is likely nutritional in nature.

Foot Pain, Fatigue and Nutrition.  Many Americans suffer from foot pain.  Like most types of pain many make the assumption that their problem is physical in nature.  While this is the most likely scenario, if you suffer from chronic foot pain and nothing has helped, the problem may lie with nutrition.  In fact It may mean that you’re either not eating enough dietary fiber, or that your body has difficulty digesting, absorbing and using fiber.  Of course the last possibility is that you’re not eating the right type of fiber.

So where should your fiber come from?  I bet you guessed whole grains.  Am I right?  Sadly, that is not such a good idea.  Whole grains contain several chemicals which actually harm your digestive tract.  In fact, many refer to them as anti-nutrients, and there are two types.  The first type is enzyme inhibitors.  These inhibitors interfere with your body’s enzymes.  Your body needs these precious enzymes to break down your food so your body can digest it.  Otherwise you can’t get the valuable nutrients the food provides.  The second type of anti-nutrient is harmful agents that can kill the healthy probiotic population in your small intestine.  There is, however, a work around.  Fermented grains do not pose these problems.  What most people don’t realize is that your fiber should come from fresh fruits and vegetables.

How can I tell?

So how can you tell if your foot pain is nutritional in nature?   Here is a list of problems you may experience along with your foot pain:

  • Always tired
  • Lack of appetite
  • Grinding of the teeth
  • Unexpected weight loss or difficulty gaining weight
  • Stiff ankles

These may be signs that your pain may be from a nutritional problem, and not a physical one.  If you call our office and set up a consultation, we can do some preliminary testing to either confirm or rule out nutritional stress.  We accomplish this using precursory testing and Bio Impedance Analysis.  Both of which are scientific and based on sound medical principles.  If it is physical in nature, we can help with the right combination of cutting edge orthotics, home exercises and chiropractic care to get back up and running.

Opioids for Chronic Pain – stopping helps.

Opioids for Chronic Pain – Tapering off can actually help.  Did you know over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain?  This comes from the American Academy of Pain Medicine.   Sadly, the go-to medication is narcotics.  However, the long-term use also carries an increased risk of addiction and overdose.  Sadly, an opioid overdose epidemic is ravaging the United States.  In fact, it killed more than 33,000 people in 2015.  What’s worse, is that half of them were due to prescribed drugs.

Do you take opioids for chronic pain?  Did you know that the same research showed that tapering off these harmful medications and gradually adding mind body therapies as well as physical modalities such as chiropractic and physical therapy?  The article states that a teamwork or combined approach seems to work best.  It’s important to remember that opioid abuse, both prescribed and illegal is a serious epidemic in the United States.  In either case it is addictive, habit forming and it’s effectiveness weakens over time.  This creates the need for higher and higher dosages.  In fact that’s how this drug forms an addiction.

It’s also important to remember that while modern medicine uses them to treat chronic, their original intent was only short term use.  Every medical intervention does serve a purpose.  In fact certain medical treatments are only a problem if they are over used or misused.  Sadly these medications are often used long term for pain management, and this is where the fundamental problem lies.

Digestion Plays a key Role

What most people fail to realize is that your digestive health may be the key to your chronic pain.  If your gut isn’t working properly, it can lead to a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome.  This in turn can lead to a whole host of symptoms including fatigue and chronic pain   And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including chronic pain), I can help support healthy digestion.  And of course this, in turn, prevents leaky gut which can support healthy digestion.  We can also combine nutrition with the right combination of home exercises, and traditional or low force chiropractic care.

As it follows, this may prevent chronic pain. I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.  Sometimes chiropractic care can help too, but chronic pain varies so much that depends on the patient.
