Magnesium, the latest craze…

Magnesium, it’s the latest craze.  A few weeks ago, my wife went in for her annual checkup.  After a thorough evaluation, the facility wanted to sell her some magnesium.  I looked up the research and found it support the opposite aspects of healthy function that my wife needed.  A week later, I did a health presentation.  Before and after the presentation, the audience was rumbling about the wonders of magnesium.  It seems that magnesium is the new miracle cure, or is it…

Magnesium is the latest trend, but is it right for you?

Magnesium seems to be the latest popular go to supplement.  Sadly, supplements follow fad trends just like fashion, music, and other forms of pop culture.  While there are benefits, there are also down sides.  The benefits are that we learn more about the ways a supplement may help support a healthy functioning body.  However, the down side is that the population blindly rushes to the store to take it, without knowing if it’s truly right for them.  It seems the need for hope has kept the old “snake oil” ideas alive.  And yes, I did say that to get your attention, there are situations where magnesium can support healthy function.  However, that does not make it a cure-all.

So, I know what you’re thinking.  It’s magnesium, it’s natural.  It can’t be bad, right?  It’s crucial to remember that just because something is natural does not mean it’s automatically harmless.  In fact, polar bear liver is totally natural, and high in vitamin A.  So, should we all eat polar bear liver?  Absolutely not.  It turns out that polar bear liver contains deadly amounts of vitamin A.  That’s right, if you eat polar bear liver, you will die of vitamin A poisoning.  And yet it’s 100% natural.

The Potential Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium has shown strong evidence to support healthy sleep habits, especially in the elderly.  Furthermore, a magnesium deficiency can cause migraine headaches.  However, I must urge caution here.  There are many many causes for migraines, so if it helps you, GREAT! But do not expect it to be a miracle cure.  There are even some sources that state magnesium can help your body’s ability to reduce inflammation.  Additionally, many mental health professionals are using it to support healthy mood to combat depression.  But it’s also important to note that there is not research on this.  One study (and I want to emphasize 1 study) found magnesium helpful in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.  Another study showed it may help with constipation by pulling water into the intestines.  However, any powdered substance will do draw water into the digestive tract.

Magnesium: the Side effects

Just because something’s natural does not mean it is free of side effects.  In fact, the side effects of magnesium include (according to Elsevier):

  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Unusual sweating
  • Breathing problems
  • Low body temperature
  • Unusually weak or tired
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

The role of Enzymes:

Even if magnesium is right for you, do you know what your body needs to make it work right?  That’s right, it’s enzymes.  Enzymes allow your body to properly use the vital nutrition it needs.  So how do you know what enzymes are right for you?  Different enzymes help your body perform different tasks properly.  As a result, your body requires specific testing to identify the source(s) of stress in your body.  Only then can the right combination of enzymes and dietary changes help support a properly working body.

If you want answers…

Have you been from doctor to doctor with no answers to your suffering?  Are you sick and tired if being processed through the American health care system like a piece of cattle?  Is everyone coming up with a different buzz word for your problems?  Do some think you’re even faking it?   Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease.  According to the Merck Manual, there are two major types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD.  Both are similar in nature and are the result of your immune system attacking your digestive tract.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease.  The type types of IBD are Chron’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.  Both are the result of your immune system reacting and attacking the lining in your gut.  As your immune system attacks this lining, it compromises the lining.  In turn, this leads to inflammation and a host of digestive problems.  These problems usually include chronic inflammation at various sites in the GI tract along with diarrhea and abdominal pain.

So how exactly does one distinguish between the two types of IBD?  As it turns out, this is a difficult task.  In many cases, they can be difficult to tell apart.   In fact, these two diseases have many similarities and sometimes are difficult to distinguish from each other.  However, there is one major difference.  Crohn’s disease can affect almost any part of the digestive tract.  Meanwhile, Ulcerative Colitis almost always affects only the large intestine.  However if your problem lies only in the large intestine, that doesn’t rule out Chrohn’s disease.  Sadly, no on really knows the cause of either form of inflammatory bowel disease.

How to Tackle it…

The common medical treatment involves drugs that suppress your immune system.  The idea is to kill off part of your immune system so that it can’t attack the digestive lining.  However, what medicine fails to answer an important question.  “What’s causing your immune system to overreact?”

This is a question we seek to answer in the enzyme nutrition world.  While I don’t treat diseases (including either form of IBD), I can support healthy digestion and a healthy immune response.  We can do this several ways.  First by helping your body properly heal the digestive lining.  Second, we can find out what organ is stressed enough to cause your immune system to over react.  Once we determine that, we can support the healthy function of that particular organ.  Either way, we accomplish this with a combination of dietary changes and enzyme supplements.  But only after performing scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Foot Pain, Fatigue and Nutrition

Foot Pain, Fatigue and Nutrition.  Do you suffer from chronic pain on the bottom of your foot?  Custom orthotics not working?  Are you always tired?  If so, your foot pain is likely nutritional in nature.

Foot Pain, Fatigue and Nutrition.  Many Americans suffer from foot pain.  Like most types of pain many make the assumption that their problem is physical in nature.  While this is the most likely scenario, if you suffer from chronic foot pain and nothing has helped, the problem may lie with nutrition.  In fact It may mean that you’re either not eating enough dietary fiber, or that your body has difficulty digesting, absorbing and using fiber.  Of course the last possibility is that you’re not eating the right type of fiber.

So where should your fiber come from?  I bet you guessed whole grains.  Am I right?  Sadly, that is not such a good idea.  Whole grains contain several chemicals which actually harm your digestive tract.  In fact, many refer to them as anti-nutrients, and there are two types.  The first type is enzyme inhibitors.  These inhibitors interfere with your body’s enzymes.  Your body needs these precious enzymes to break down your food so your body can digest it.  Otherwise you can’t get the valuable nutrients the food provides.  The second type of anti-nutrient is harmful agents that can kill the healthy probiotic population in your small intestine.  There is, however, a work around.  Fermented grains do not pose these problems.  What most people don’t realize is that your fiber should come from fresh fruits and vegetables.

How can I tell?

So how can you tell if your foot pain is nutritional in nature?   Here is a list of problems you may experience along with your foot pain:

  • Always tired
  • Lack of appetite
  • Grinding of the teeth
  • Unexpected weight loss or difficulty gaining weight
  • Stiff ankles

These may be signs that your pain may be from a nutritional problem, and not a physical one.  If you call our office and set up a consultation, we can do some preliminary testing to either confirm or rule out nutritional stress.  We accomplish this using precursory testing and Bio Impedance Analysis.  Both of which are scientific and based on sound medical principles.  If it is physical in nature, we can help with the right combination of cutting edge orthotics, home exercises and chiropractic care to get back up and running.

Hip Pain may be from poor diet

Your hip pain may be from poor nutrition.  Do you suffer from hip pain?  Do you have a history of arthritis or osteoporosis?  Or perhaps you suffer from other bone or tooth problems.  Do you have trouble sleeping, or suffer from restlessness?  These are signs that your hip pain my in fact be due to poor nutrition.

Did you know that your hip pain may be from poor nutrition?  Hip problems are very common in the U.S. today.  While there are a variety of great ways to take care of injuries, few realize that your hip pain may not be from physical stress. In fact it could be due to poor nutrition, or an imbalance in your nervous system.  While chiropractic, physical therapy and other treatments are great for hip problems which are physical in nature, when your hip pain comes from nutritional problems, these treatments fall short.

Common Signs

So how can you tell if your hip pain is from a physical injury or due to nutritional stress?  Sadly, many people just like you only find this out after a battery of physical interventions such as physical therapy and chiropractic.  Once again, to be clear, those treatments are great if you suffer from a mechanical problem.   Because of this, I listed some signs that may point to nutritional problems:

  1. History of arthritis, osteoporosis, bone spurs, or other bone and tooth problems
  2. Loose teeth or poor fitting dentures
  3. Hyper-irritability, insomnia, and/or restlessness
  4. History of Chronic low back pain
  5. Fallen Arches
  6. Weak joints, or unstable ligaments

If you had blood work done you may possibly find low calcium, low total protein and low albumin.  A 24 hour urine analysis might reveal low calcium with an excessive alkaline pH.

How can you Tell?

Often times this can be a sign of a calcium and vitamin D deficiency.  However, it is crucial to get your calcium from your diet, not from supplements.  It could also be a sign of  inadequate protein or fat intake.  If you are eating enough of these essential nutrients, it may be your body has trouble digesting, absorbing or using protein, fats or calcium.  It’s important to remember that your body uses protein to carry calcium.  Because of this, a “calcium deficiency” may actually be a protein problem.

OK, I know what you’re thinking.  How can I tell the difference?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we can perform objective tests based on sound medical principals to find where the actual source of stress exists.  Once we figure that out we can put a plan in place to make sure your body gets the vital nutrition it needs.  In addition, we can help your body properly digest, absorb and use those precious building blocks to health.

Now what do I do?

Do you suffer from chronic hip pain?   Or perhaps you suffer from the ailments listed above.  As I mentioned earlier, these may be signs of nutritional problems.  Do your problems affect work, fun or family? If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Digestion Chronic Pain

Digestion Chronic Pain. According to the National Institute of Health, about 5 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and Fibromyalgia each year.  In addition, many health care providers use these terms as a catch when a condition doesn’t fit the symptoms.  Sadly, no one really knows why or what causes it.  However, new research shows a strong link between digestive health and chronic pain.

The Medical Approach of Drugs

Digestion Chronic Pain.  And while there is medication out there, the most recent research proves it doesn’t work at all.   Furthermore, in 2013 the National Pain Foundation conducted a study on fibromyalgia medication.  According to this break through research, over two-thirds of fibromyalgia patients said their medication didn’t work at all.  And sadly, this medication is only for symptoms relief.  To make matters worse, the pain is often comes with other problems.  Many sufferers of chronic pain also suffer from fatigue, joint pain, poor digestion, sleeplessness, depression, and “brain fog” or the inability to concentrate or focus.

Despite this, in 2012, researchers from Johns Hopkins University estimated the cost of chronic pain as $635 billion annually.  That’s about as much as the combined cost of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. In Europe, estimates suggest that chronic pain conditions subtract 3% right off the top of their gross domestic product.

One of the most interesting aspects of chronic pain is its link to digestion. In fact, researchers are accumulating loads of evidence.  This new evidence suggests that certain forms of pain are the result of signals emitted by your gut when it’s not healthy.  In Cambridge, Emeran Mayer, is presenting results that suggest digestive influence. Emeran is from the University of California Los Angeles.

There is strong evidence showing the communication between the gut and your body is two way.  In fact, researchers refer to it as the gut brain axis, or the enteric nervous system. (see my prior articles). The autonomic nervous system, which regulates the activity your gut and other organs, sends out signals.  These signals affect your digestion, altering its activity. Then your gut talks back to your body in return.  When the gut is stressed, it affects this communication.  This, in turn, can lead to chronic pain.

The Key to Gut Health…

What most people fail to realize is that your digestive health can be the key to your chronic pain.  If your gut isn’t working properly, it can lead to a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome.  This in turn can lead to a whole host of symptoms including fatigue, joint pain, poor digestion, sleeplessness, depression, and “brain fog” or the inability to concentrate or focus.  When these symptoms last long enough, the most common medical diagnosis is fibromyalgia.   And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including fibromyalgia), I can help support healthy digestion.  And of course this, in turn, prevents leaky gut.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you suffer from chronic pain, muscle discomfort, fatigue, depression and brain fog? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Gall Bladder Health and Energy

Gall Bladder Health.  While all of the current rage seems to be probiotics for healthy digestive support, there are many other key components.   One of them is the gall bladder and bile production, known as the biliary system.

Gall bladder health and energy.  Perhaps the easiest way to explain how the gall bladder works is with the old oil and water example.  I’m sure you all know what happens when you try to mix oil and water, right?  Take a jar and fill it half way with water, and the rest of the way with cooking oil.  Now close the jar and feel free to shake it up all you like.  Of course the minute you stop shaking it the oil and water separate almost immediately.  As it turns out, you have the same problem in your body.  Your blood stream and most of the fluid systems in your body are water based.  But fat, which is a necessary dietary nutrient, is oil based.  So how can you dissolve this fat into water?  And yes this even includes the ever so precious omega three fatty acids.

Gall Bladder, Bile and Health

As it turns out, your liver and gall bladder solve this problem.  The liver makes a thick fluid called bile, and the gall bladder stores it.  When you eat fats, your pancreas releases digestive enzymes, called lipase.  Lipase breaks down these fats for proper digestion and absorption.  But lipase cannot penetrate these fatty oils without proper preparation.  In order to break down these precious fats, the gall bladder releases bile.  Bile emulsifies fats and oils so that lipase can penetrate these oils to ensure proper digestion.

When looking at dietary health, it’s important to remember that fats are a necessary part of your diet.  In fact your body needs them for energy, for hormones production, (including reproductive hormones), and for healthy brain function.  And that’s just naming a few.  If you no longer have your gall bladder, or it doesn’t working properly, it can cause variety of health problems.  Here are some early signs of gall bladder problems:

  1. History of gallbladder stones or surgery.
  2. Loss of appetite, especially for meat.
  3. Frequent sour taste in the mouth.
  4. Infrequent bowel movements (constipation).
  5. A light-colored stool.
  6. Gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort or soreness after eating

(Source: Dr. Howard Loomis, founder of Enzyme Nutrition)

Supplemental enzymes from a plant source are the most effective way to support healthy digestive function.  In fact, aromatic herbs can also support healthy liver and bile function. These are herbs that have a fragrant smell and an agreeable, pungent taste. Turmeric and ginger root as well as cinnamon bark are time-honored favorites. Also, the use of fennel seed dates back to the glory days of Rome, and lecithin is an excellent emulsifier (Dr. Howard Loomis).  Of course these plants only help with the right enzymes in place.

Finding the source of stress

Fortunately, there is a solution.  In fact, this is where enzyme nutrition comes in.  Enzyme nutrition uses sound scientific principles to identify the actually source of stress.  Secondly it seeks to help the stressed organs and tissues work better through a careful combination of dietary changes and enzyme supplements.  This includes nutritional support for healthy liver and gall bladder function.
