What Causes Type 2 Diabetes, The Real Problem.  The common type 2 diabetes meds on the market usually perform one of two tasks.  The most common help your body make more insulin.  Others help your body eliminate more sugar through the kidneys.  However, the safety of these latter drugs is now under investigation.  Nevertheless, what if I told you that a lack of insulin is not the problem?  Let me explain.

The number one cause of type 2 diabetes in the United States is something called insulin resistance.  What exactly does this mean?  It means that the cells do not respond to insulin.  If the cells do not respond to insulin, then sugar cannot leave the blood and enter the cell.  Of course, the end result is high blood sugar.  If the problem progresses, it becomes type 2 diabetes.

How Insulin Works

Insulin is a hormone that has many functions in the body.  However, let’s go over how it manages your blood sugar levels.  In order for sugar to leave the blood stream it has to enter cells.  However, sugar, like all solid matter, cannot just enter the cell.  This is because the cell has a cell wall.  The purpose of this wall is to allow the cell to be selective about what can enter and leave the cell.  This wall keeps the cell protected and healthy.

So just how do chemicals like sugar enter the cell?  Basically, it needs a passcode.  There is specific type of door on the cell wall for each type of chemical.  Of course, each cell has many doors of each type.  However, each of these doors needs a passcode or key.

Insulin is the key that opens the “sugar doors” to allow sugar to enter the cell.  The keyhole or password keypad is called an insulin receptor.  In order for sugar to leave the blood stream and enter the cell, insulin (the key) has to bind with the insulin receptors on the cell (the keyhole).  Once this happens, the sugar-specific doors on the cell wall open up allowing sugar to leave the blood stream and enter the cell.

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes

Now the most common cause of type two diabetes is SAD – the Standard American Diet, which is way too high in simple carbs.  However, a close second is stress, which causes chronic inflammation.  This, in turn, leads to insulin resistance.  Just what is insulin resistance?   Basically, your cells can increase or decrease the number of insulin receptors (keyholes) on the cell wall.

Insulin resistance is a reduced number of insulin receptors on the cell wall.  As a result, it does not matter how much insulin is floating around in your blood, there aren’t enough receptors for them to bind to.  This leads to the inability of sugar to enter the cell and leave the blood.  As the sugar builds up in the blood, the result is high blood sugar, and eventually type 2 diabetes.  In fact, this is what causes type 2 diabetes.

Help Your Body Use Sugar Properly

While I don’t treat type 2 diabetes, or any disease for that matter, I can help patients who are concerned about their blood sugar.  Actually, I can help a number of ways.  First, I can help you work out a diet low in simple carbs.  Second, the right digestive enzymes can help your body use fat properly for energy.  When your body uses fat properly, this helps curb your sugar cravings.  Third, and most important, the right enzymes can help your body promote an abundance of insulin receptors on the cell wall.  This will allow insulin to bind with more receptors allowing sugar to properly leave the blood and enter the cell.

If You’re Concerned

Do you suffer from type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome?  Is your blood sugar slowly rising out of control?  Are you worried about missing out on work family or fun? While I don’t treat type 2 diabetes, I can help.  If that sounds good, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120.

Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Metabolic Syndrome.  Medical professionals coined this term in 1947.  However, it gained popularity in the 1970’s and faded in the new millennium.  So what exactly is metabolic syndrome?  Metabolic syndrome is a collection of borderline problems including high body fat, blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood chemistry.  So just what exactly does it mean?  It means that if you have metabolic syndrome, and you don’t do anything about it, you’ll experience serious health problems down the road.  In fact according to the Merck Manual, over 40% of adults over 50 suffer from it.

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of “early warning signs.” This signs often indicate that some serious health problems will arise in your future.  Those health problems include type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis, chronic inflammation and kidney problems.  Another common sign is a large waist size indicating too much belly fat.  We refer to this as a pear shaped body instead of an apple shape.  In fact according to the Merck Manual, low testosterone in men and a history of polycystic ovaries in women can also lead to this condition.

The Medical Approach

Sadly, medical practitioners rarely talk about it these days.  This is unfortunate.  Why?  While it’s not a serious problem by itself, it does mean you’re headed towards some serious life shortening chronic diseases.  Sadly, when medical professionals do intervene, treatment usually includes medication do address the symptoms.  These medications basically treat high blood sugar, or high blood pressure, or cholesterol.  However, there are two major problems with this approach.  The first problem is that these medications deal with the complications, not the actual problem.  Secondly, the drugs come with some serious side effects.
