piriformis syndrome - sciatic nerve
piriformis syndrome

Do you have pain radiating down back of the leg? Does it go below the knee? Does it cause numbness or weakness in the leg, foot or toes?  The go to diagnosis for these symptoms is a bulged disc.  However, there are other conditions that can cause these life limiting conditions. One of the most common is Piriformis Syndrome.

The piriformis muscle is a very tricky little muscle.  It starts on the front surface of the tail bone wraps around the back of the hip just under the glutes.  The muscle continues around until it attaches to the outside front of the hip.  While small, the piriformis is responsible for turning the foot out.  We call it external rotation.  As it turns out this muscle passes just over the sciatic nerve.  If the muscle is too tight, injured or inflamed it can place pressure on the sciatic nerve.  If the sacrum, pelvis or hip are mis-aligned it can also aggravate the piriformis muscle.  This causes pressure on the sciatic nerve.  This results in sciatica, not due to any disc involvement.

The nuts and bolts of Piriformis Syndrome

Mis-alignments in the lumbar spine can also distort the pelvis or tail bone.  This results in sciatic pressure from the piriformis muscle.  When this happens, it is called piriformis syndrome.  In my office we treat this through a combination of chiropractic care, home care and enzyme nutrition.  The goal of Chiropractic care is realigning the lower spine, pelvis, sacrum, or hips. Home care has three aims.  First, to stretch the piriformis muscle.  Second, to reinforce proper posture through changes in muscles and ligaments.  Lastly and to strengthen and stabilize the hips, pelvis and lumbar spine.  The purpose of Enzyme nutrition is to promote healthy muscle, joints, or inflammation levels.  This depends on the source of stress to the piriformis muscle.

Do you suffer from a bulged disc, sciatica or low back pain?  Would you like to see if you can avoid surgery?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

After many years of clinical practice, Dr. Marrone has forged a remarkable career as a practitioner, educator and lecturer.
