Sports and Junk Food – Junk food Sponsors our Sports

Sports and Junk Food: Our professional athletes are in tip top shape.  In fact, they exercise regularly, and stay on a very strict diet.  As a part of that diet, they have to avoid junk food.  Don’t you find it ironic that over three fourths of their sponsors promote that very same junk food?

Sports and Junk Food

It’s time for the big game.  In fact, you host a huge party at your house.  You spared no expense.  In fact, there’s a spread on your table that could feed an army.  It’s time.  The athletes come out onto the field, court, or rink.  Look at how in shape they are.  Meanwhile, everyone sits down in a comfortable couch or chair.  You fill your cup with beer or soda, and load your plate with chips, nachos, and dips.

Major Sports Promote Unhealthy Eating

According to Pediatrics Journal, published recently in 2018, over 76% of all major sporting ads and sponsors are for soft drinks or junk food.  That’s right, sports and junk food seem to go hand in hand.  Sadly, is these ads target our youth.  In fact, the sports programs sampled in the study had the most viewership between the ages of 2 and 17 years of age.

Just what, exactly, does this mean?  Well, it means that media is teaching your children unhealthy eating habits at an early age.  Furthermore, media reinforces those habits as your child ages. Now your child is a young adult.  Since these habits developed over a long period of time, they’re even harder to break.  As a result, like smoking, not starting is the best advice.

Obesity Causes Disease

It’s crucial to remember that chronic health problems are growing in America.  These problems include heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes.  Sadly, the number one cause of all of these diseases is obesity.  While the athletes you watch are avoiding these foods, your children are sitting on the couch watching while eating these foods.  Ironic, isn’t it?
