Chiropractic Helps Digestion.  According to News Target, Americans like you spend over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs for digestive problems.  You turn to these harmful meds with the hopes of relieving heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other gut problems. Sadly, these are only symptoms of abnormal digestion.  Additionally, they are on the rise in our society. However, there is an alternative to these harmful medications.  Research shows that chiropractic helps digestion.  In fact, Chiropractic Technique (1996, 1994 and 1993), Chiropractic Pediatrics (1993), and Clinical Chiropractic (2008) all published research showing digestion improvement with care.

So, I bet I know what you’re thinking. “Just how can adjustments help with digestion?  After all they’re just for back pain, right?”  While that seems to be the popular idea, chiropractic actually has very little to do with pain.  Why?  Because our precise spinal care takes pressure off of vital nerves.  While over 92% of these nerves control every function in your body, including your digestion, less than 8% deal with pain.  In fact, your digestion is controlled by two main nerves.  First, the vagus nerve, which comes from the brain stem controls the first 2/3’s of your colon.  Afterwards, sacral nerves control the remainder of your colon.

On top of that, spinal nerves control your stomach, gall bladder, pancreas, and small intestines.  All of these are organs are critical for digestive health.  Taking pressure off of these important nerves helps brain messages control your gut.  This, in turn, helps your digestion.  However, there’s another wrinkle in this system.  There’s another part of your nervous system that shuts down digestion.  That system is your fight or flight system.  Furthermore, stress activates this system, which shuts down digestion.  Know anyone with stress?  In fact, irritation to this system can also activate this system brining digestion to a halt.   Fortunately, research also shows chiropractic lowers levels stress chemicals.  As a result, lowering stress chemicals through spinal care can also aid digestion.

Vitamin D, Enzymes, and Health

It seems to be common knowledge that Americans don’t get enough vitamin D.  However, many are unaware of all of the consequences.  Yes, we all know that vitamin D is vital for bone health, your body needs it for so much more.  In fact, irritable bowel syndrome and sports injuries may also be linked to a vitamin D deficiency.  In fact, did you know:

IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common digestive problem in the U.S.?  According to IRI, Americans spent about $1.6 billion last year.  IBS is a collection of digestive problems including abdominal discomfort, spastic colon, gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation.  So, what does this have to do with vitamin D?  Well, about 75 percent of people with IBS have insufficient levels of vitamin D.  Additionally, and about 70 percent report improvement when taking vitamin D supplements.  There is even research that shows that patients who show a genetic predisposition to IBS have lower vitamin D levels.

Sports Injuries

So, what about sports injuries?  Well, let’s take a look at some professional athletes.  After all, they must take really good care of themselves and can probably afford to eat healthy.  They can even afford the make sure they get the proper levels of vitamin D either through their diet or via supplements.  Would it surprise you to know that about 60 percent of NFL players have low vitamin D.  This deficiency places them at increased risk for injury.  In fact, about 56 percent of players with low vitamin D suffered muscle strain or injury, especially in the legs and feet.  What’s more, many athletes and general Americans are supplementing with copious amounts of this important vitamin.

Enzymes & Vitamin D

So, what exactly is the role of enzymes when it comes to vitamin D.  Do you know what vitamin d is?  Is it a fat?  Or perhaps it’s a protein.  Maybe it’s a carbohydrate?  It’s a fat.  In fact, it’s one of four fat-based vitamins.  Do you know the other ones?  They’re vitamins A, E, & K.  Your body can not absorb fats directly.  Why?  Your body is basically water.  Meanwhile, these Vitamin D is a fat, which is basically oil.  Of course, we all know what happens when we try to mix water and oil, right?  So, your body has to emulsify these four vitamins.  Only then can your body break them down and absorb them.  Your body uses bile to emulsify fats, and lipase to break them down for digestion.

When your body can’t make enough bile, it can’t emulsify these fat-based vitamins.  This means your body can’t break down this crucial vitamin.  Interestingly, the inability to break down proteins causes problems with bile flow.  In this case enzymes that support healthy protein digestion may be helpful.  However, if your body can’t make enough lipase then even if it can emulsify fat-based vitamins, A-D-E-K, it can’t break it down for absorption.  In this case enzymes that support healthy fat digestion may be helpful.  Did you remember that your body’s ability to make these enzymes declines up to 70% by age 40? These are some of the many reasons I chose to specialize in enzyme nutrition.
