Insomnia? Try improving gut health.  Research from a top neuroscience journal published in January of 2017 showed that if you improve your gut health, you can improve your sleep.  This study was so ground-breaking that “Frontiers in Behavior Neuroscience” published the article.

Less Sleep, Shorter Life

For starters did you know that insomnia taxes your immune system the exact same way an infection does?  So, if you compromise your immune system through sleep deprivation, what happens when you catch a cold?   You’ve basically overwhelmed your immune system.  As a result, your immune system cannot keep up with demand.  However, there are many other long-term effects to sleep deprivation, including a shorter life span.  In fact, studies exist to back this up.

So just what are all of the complications of staying up too late?   For starters, did you know that driving while tired is about the same as driving with a 0.10 blood alcohol level?  That’s right, driving while tired is the same as driving drunk.  As I stated earlier some 50-70 million Americans just like you suffer from insomnia.

While the study focused on gut friendly foods and probiotics, a word of caution is important. After all, your body should support a healthy population all by itself.  As a result, constantly downing probiotics addresses the symptom, and not the cause.  It’s important to use the right combination of diet and enzyme supplements to create a healthy mucous layer.  Once your gut has a healthy mucous layer, your probiotics will thrive on their own.

Some Dietary Tips

In fact, here is a list of gut-friendly foods: Apples, Asparagus, Banana, Beetroot, Breast milk, Burdock root, Cashews, Chicory root, Couscous, Fennel bulb, Garlic, Grapefruit, Green peas, Jerusalem artichokes, Jicama, Konjac root, Leeks, Nectarines, Onion, Persimmon, Pistachios, Pomegranate, Savoy cabbage, Seaweed, Shallots, Snow peas, Tamarillo

Please remember to ferment your grains and beans and soak all nuts until they sprout.

Conversely, here is a list of things that can compromise gut health: Antibiotics, Conventionally raised meats, Processed foods, Excessive sugars, Agricultural chemicals, Antibacterial soap.

However, if this is a long-term problem, your healthy mucous layer was replaced by unhealthy biofilm.  Sadly, we have to get rid of the bio film first.

Our Unique Approach

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we take a comprehensive approach to gut health.  If biofilm is present, we use the right enzymes to break it down first.  Then the right combination of enzymes can create healthy mucous layers in the stomach, small intestines and large intestines.  Once each layer is healthy, then we can use the right prebiotics and probiotics to repopulate.  Once we repopulate, there is no need to continue taking them.

Sleep Deprivation and Your Health

Sleep Deprivation and Your Health.  Did you know that most Americans do not get enough sleep?  In fact, according to the National Sleep foundation, most Americans get less than 6 hours of sleep each night.  What most fail to realize, however, is that lack of sleep can actually shorten your life.

  • Premature birth:  Pregnant mothers who don’t get enough sleep are at double the risk.
  • Decreased Productivity: workers sleeping less than six hours each night cost the U.S. $411 billion annually in lost productivity
  • Obesity, which is the number one cause of chronic diseases in the U.S.
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Better chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia
  • Depression and anxiety
  • High Blood pressure, which causes heart disease and stroke
  • A 50% elevated risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Stomach Ulcers
  • Premature aging, by affecting hormone production
  • Dying from any other cause

Sleep Medications

Perhaps your one of the millions of Americans who turn to sleep aids.  If you are here is some vital information for you.  Research shows that these drugs do not work.  In fact, they are only marginally better than a placebo, or sugar pill.  Sleep pills increased sleep time by 13 minutes.  Meanwhile, the placebo improved sleep time by 11 minutes.  At the same time, people who take sleeping pills increase their risk of cancer by 35 percent.  Sadly the risk of death is also four times higher.  Are those risks worth an extra 2 to 13 minutes of sleep?

The Natural Approach

So do you have trouble getting enough sleep?  Is it stress related?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we take a unique approach to helping your body sleep properly.  In fact we accomplish this by addressing the source of stress after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.  Scenarios may be helping your body manage stress properly, support for healthy adrenal function, or supporting healthy energy levels throughout the day so you’re actually tired at night.  We can also support healthy mood through helping your brain properly making the right chemicals.  Once testing is complete, we use a combination of dietary changes along with enzyme supplements that are safe, natural and effective at helping your body function normally.
