Ulcerative Colitis and enzymes:  In fact, I recently found this research on Pub Med’s web site.  In the study, experts examined the lining of the small intestine in a group of patients with either Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis.  When they examined samples, they consistently found a lack of digestive enzymes.  In fact over two thirds of all of the patients had very low enzyme levels.

While the study doesn’t reveal cause and effect, it really doesn’t matter.  Your body requires these crucial enzymes for digesting, absorbing and utilizing precious proteins and carbs from your diet.  Sadly, if you suffer either disease, you do not have enough enzymes to process your food.  Additionally, since these conditions are autoimmune, the right enzymes can help your body properly balance and manage a healthy immune response.  It’s also important to point out that this disease comes packaged with inflammation.  Did you know the right enzymes can also support your body’s ability to control inflammation?

So what happens when you can’t digest your food properly?  First of all, you fail to get the vital nutrition you need to stay healthy.  However, since the nutrient rich food travels through the digestive tract, it attracts bacteria.  This bacteria feeds on the nutrient rich stool.  This has a two-pronged effect.  First of all, it compacts the stool leading to constipation and/or diarrhea.  Second of all it leads to bowel toxicity. Sadly, bowel toxicity leads to a host of other health problems including cancer.

Our Approach

Your enzyme levels are a direct result of your digestive health. And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including digestive diseases and autoimmune diseases), I can help support healthy digestion. Additionally I can support healthy inflammation levels as well as healthy immune function.  And of course this, in turn, promotes healthy bowel function. I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based.  And these tests are based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about your digestive health?  Or perhaps you’re thinking about your immune health.  Does it affect your job, family or fun? Are you worried about the long term affects?  If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Arthritis Joint Health

Arthritis Joint Health – Don’t miss this amazing episode on arthritis.  Your host, Andy Marrone, D.C. goes over the most common types of arthritis.  Of course, this includes cause, symptoms and common medical treatments.  Did you know there are over 100 types of arthritis?  While simple wear and tear causes some of them, others have far more sinister origins.  These include autoimmune problems as well as an overactive inflammatory response.

Dr. Andy also covers how enzyme nutrition can help support healthy joint function and repair.  Furthermore, he delves into the key to joint health, immune health and swelling control.  He also covers the three filters of the body.  Of course this includes how they play a vital role in immune system health.

He also goes over a case study showing an elderly woman was able to cease her medication thanks to chiropractic care.  The women suffered from Rheumatoid arthritis.  The research also explains why chiropractic care worked for this patient.

Lastly he talks about some controversial news regarding fibromyalgia.  While fibro is an autoimmune disease, and an inflammatory disease, it is not a form of arthritis.  However, some medical web sites are stating that it is, although the Merck manual has not classified it as arthritis.

Lastly he ends the show by answering a listener’s email about PMS and water retention.

Enzymes Arthritis Inflammation – What most people don’t realize, however, is that enzymes also play a vital role in controlling swelling.  It’s also important to remember that most forms of arthritis are inflammatory diseases.  There are also many other disease that result from these problems.

Inflammation or swelling is your body’s biggest way of protecting itself.  Have you ever suffered an insect bite, an injury, or a sore throat?  If so, then you know what it is. It’s basically your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. In fact, there are five textbook signs.  They are: redness, heat, swelling, pain, and tight muscles.

So what regulates this response?  The answer lies with specific enzymes.  They break down certain proteins that cause swelling.  This, in turn, controls inflammation levels in your body.  These vital chemicals work by breaking down germs and toxins that tax your immune system and lead to swelling.  Without them, his swelling leads to many serious problems.  These include kidney disease, chronic pain, nerve problems, certain types of arthritis, and many more.  In fact, rheumatoid arthritis is the most common inflammatory joint disease, but there are others as well.

In fact, according to Nutrition Review, Italian researchers performed a study comparing these enzymes to the most popular drugs on the market today.  They found that the enzymes did just as well or better than the four most powerful steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.  Now it’s important to realize that you can’t just pick an enzyme product off the shelf.  It has to be specific enzymes.

Our Approach

While we don’t treat diseases (including arthritis or inflammation), we do promote healthy inflammation control.   When your body controls inflammation properly, it is less likely to suffer from these problems.

We accomplish this with a comprehensive approach using the right combination of diet and enzyme supplements.   We can also support healthy breakdown of the culprits that cause inflammation.  While we typically we will focus on protein,  each case is different.  For that reason we only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.  Of course chiropractic care can also help lower inflammation levels.  To learn more, see my previous article here.

Chiropractic helps with rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease where the body’s immune system attacks your joints.  The hallmark of disease is chronic inflammation.  Over time, it actually destroys joints, tissues and organs. A recent study published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research shows how chiropractic care showed outstanding results in a woman with long-term rheumatoid arthritis.

An elderly old woman went to see a chiropractor after suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for over seven years. She complained of severe joint pain, especially in the hands and fingers. She also complained of swelling in her hands, fingers, knees, toes and feet. Her pain and swelling were so bad that she had difficulties with just getting around.  Every morning she woke up incredibly stiff every morning. In fact, she was taking several strong drugs just to manage her symptoms. She described her pain severe all the time.

The doctor performed an extensive evaluation including posture evaluation, physical exam and x-ray imaging. The treating doctor found subluxations throughout the spine, especially in the upper neck area. X-rays also showed a loss in the curve of the neck.  As a result of this decreased curve,  a forward head shift was another clinical feature.

Research shows that forward head posture can add a significant amount of abnormal stress pulling the entire spine out of alignment.  This can also restrict normal breathing. In fact, this sort of posture problem can cause a loss of 30 percent of vital lung capacity. When this occurs, your body gets less oxygen which can affect your immune system.

Subluxation is the term for problems in the spine that interrupt nerve pathways.  This, in turn affects the organs and systems of the body impacting your overall health. Causes include any type of physical, emotional, or nutritional stress.  This stress affects nerve function, which leads poor immune function, and increased inflammation.

Subluxation causes Swelling

Chronic inflammatory based disease processes are influenced by several systems.  These include the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. In fact, nerve stimulation is essential for the growth, function and control of inflammatory cells. Researchers have noted that abnormal neurological control results in the development of various auto-immune based inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

inflammation foods
Inflammation foods cause weight gain and many other health problems

Inflammation foods.  Because of the Standard American Diet (SAD), chronic inflammation is a growing problem in the U.S.  Why?  Because chronic inflammation can lead to a host of serious diseases if left alone.  But the good news is that many Americans just like you are becoming more and more health conscious.  As a result, you are also much more aware of the problems caused by inflammation.  So here is a list of thirteen foods you should avoid.

Inflammation Foods:

1. Vegetable oils: Vegetable oils that contain omega 6 fatty acids are notorious for inflammation.  Increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids help balance your ratio between 3’s and 6’s and support low inflammation levels.  Of course, be sure to see my prior post on how to do this PROPERLY.  (Nutrients. 2016 Mar; 8(3): 128.)

2. Dairy products:In fact many people are unaware that milk and other dairy products trigger inflammation.  It is also important to note that milk is hidden in many foods including bread, cereal, cookies and so on. Not to mention  60 percent of Americans can’t digest milk (which is genetically normal, by the way).

3. Sugar: Did you know there is tons of research out there linking sugar to inflammation, obesity and chronic diseases? Avoid table sugar and foods with added sugar.  And by the way, this includes almost all processed foods. (Mediators Inflamm. 2010; 2010: 289645)

4. Processed meat: And by the way, processed meat can also cause an increased risk of cancer. (World Health Organization)

5. Refined flour: Sadly, refined grains are extremely low in nutrients.  Not only that, but there is a strong link between them and cancer, weight gain, and chronic diseases.

6. Alcohol: It comes as no surprise that Long-term alcohol intake can cause chronic inflammation and increase risk of cancer.

7. Trans fats: Of course the media has “saturated” the market with information on trans fats.  In fact you commonly find these harmful fats in  deep fried foods, especially and fast foods. Strong research shows they are strong inflammatory agents.

More Inflammation Foods…

8. Additives: Common additives like aspartame are very strong inflammatory foods. Sodas, diet sodas, and energy drinks contain high amounts of additives.

9. Artificial sweeteners: Research shows that artificial sweeteners increase inflammation, and the risk of type 2 diabetes.  See my previous article on this.

10. Gluten: Gluten ruins gut health and promotes inflammation. Avoid foods that contain wheat.  But be extremely careful.  Many gluten free foods are high in simple carbs.  These also contribute to inflammation and type 2 diabetes.

11. Agave: While many turn to agave as a natural non sugar alternative.  But unfortunately this is a mistake.  In fact, Agave is 90 percent sugar. It has been proven to cause inflammation, fast aging, and chronic diseases.  Unfortunately it has been touted as a natural sugar alternative.  But sadly, it is pretty much just sugar itself.

12. Peanuts: Peanuts cause a strong inflammatory response in the body.  They also contain aflatoxin.  Do you know what that is?  In fact, researchers use aflatoxin to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

13. Iodized salt: In fact unrefined salt is a better choice because it contains lots of minerals. Iodized salt has been proven to cause inflammation. But make sure you get plenty of iodine from foods like seaweed.

learn about Turmeric and Inflammation

Turmeric and Inflammation.  As I’ve stated in the past, supplements and natural wellness are very popular in the U.S. today.  In fact leading experts expect profits from supplement sales to double between 2012 and 2020.  And like it or not, this really is a double edged sword.  On one hand it gives you free access to an amazing way to support health and wellness.  However, many corporations profit by selling products with false claims.  Today, we will explore a popular supplement many tout for inflammation.  And of course I’ll cover the latest research behind it.

Did you know that many Americans turn to turmeric as the go to supplement for inflammation?  In fact many people use it for both chronic inflammation and for swelling from injuries.  However, according to the NCCI*, extensive research shows turmeric doesn’t help in either case.  What’s more, this research looked at over 579 strong nation-wide studies.  These studies “cannot support claims that turmeric helps to reduce inflammation.”  So where exactly did this information come from?  You can find this research in PubMed and was published in 2013.  Of course it’s also important to realize that chronic inflammation can lead to many serious illnesses.  Which ones?  These ailments include type 2 diabetes, cancer, digestive problems and arthritis.

Support Healthy Inflammation Levels

So just what is the key to supporting healthy inflammation levels?  First of all, It’s important to realize that inflammation is a necessary part of our health.  As a matter of fact it is crucial in the early stages of wound healing.  On the other hand, chronic inflammation is a problem that plagues most Americans.  Why?  For starters, you can thank the all mighty SAD.  But just what is SAD?  It stands for the Standard American Diet, which is rich in simple carbs and the wrong kinds of fibers.  “SADly” (pun intended) this contributes to the very problem.  Another problem is that many Americans are deficient in the vital enzymes required to control and counter the inflammation process.  Through a combination of dietary changes, and the proper enzyme supplements we can support a healthy inflammatory response.

We Can Help

Are you concerned about chronic inflammation?  Or perhaps you’re concerned about a family member.  Are you looking for a safe, natural approach to support a healthy inflammatory response?  If so, be the hero in their life and give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally take the time to sit down and talk with you about your suffering. I will even do some preliminary testing.  This will help determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we will make every effort to find an appropriate referral.
