Chiropractic Care and Asthma.  According to the American Lung Association, Asthma is a lung disease that makes it harder to move air in and out of your lungs.  In fact, asthma is chronic. In other words, you live with it every day.  Sadly, asthma can be serious, and even life threatening.  Unfortunately, there is no cure for asthma, but it can be managed so you live a normal, healthy life.

With asthma, the airways in your lungs are often inflamed. This swelling makes your lungs more sensitive to “triggers.”  A trigger could be a cold or the weather, or even things such as dust, chemicals, smoke and pet dander.  When you breathe in a trigger, your airways swell even more. This narrows the space for the air to move in and out of the lungs. The muscles that wrap around your airways also can tighten, making breathing even harder. When that happens, it’s called an asthma “attack.”  In fact, this asthma attack is an allergic reaction to a trigger.  So, if you suffer from asthma, your immune system is overactive.

Chiropractic Care and Asthma – Research

According to the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association (ICPA), there are 22 research publications regarding chiropractic and children with asthma.  In fact, the research shows strong evidence that chiropractic helps children who suffer from asthma.  However, I want to be clear that chiropractic care is not a substitution for an emergency inhaler.  However, there are cases where chiropractic care eliminated the need for an inhaler.

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic we take a multistep approach to asthma.  First our precise pediatric chiropractic techniques may help reduce asthma attacks.  Together with the right enzyme supplements to support healthy lung and immune function.  Of course, we only recommend treatment and supplements after testing that is based on sound medical principals.  Dr. Marrone is highly skilled in pediatric chiropractic.  As a matter of fact, Dr. Marrone’s pediatric chiropractic professor was the president of the ICPA at the time.

Sickness Chiropractic Care and the Immune System

Research from Dynamic Chiropractic shows strong evidence for boosting your immune system.  This reduces sickness and illness.  Come on, Doc, how in the world can chiropractic care help my immune system?  After all, medicine tells us that chiropractic is only good for back and neck pain.  I mean, how could it possibly help with sickness?   However, did you know that the most recent research shows otherwise?  In fact, the research shows that spinal adjustments show promise for many non-pain conditions.  Of course, this includes sickness.  Additionally, these studies also show how chiropractic helps your immune system.  Well, let’s start with sickness.  We’ll cover allergies in a future article.

The Research

Actually, research way back in the 1990s sparked the need for more recent papers.  In fact, Brennan, et al, published a paper showing that upper thoracic adjustments resulted in improved immune activity.  Specifically, it improved the number of cells your immune system makes to fight off bacteria.  However, in a second study, the same author showed that spinal adjustments increased CD4 T-cell counts.  These cells are a vital part of your immune system.  In fact, they initiate your body’s response to kill viruses.  Surprisingly, this includes boosting immune function in people who are HIV-positive.  Actually, their T-cell counts improved by an astonishing 48 percent over six-months.  Six months was the duration of the study.  Additional studies even show that adjustments reduce inflammation in your body.  And this chronic swelling can lead to sickness.

How Chiropractic Helps

So, how does chiropractic keep you from getting sick?  In order to answer that question, let me first ask another question.  What part of your body controls your immune system?  You guessed it, it’s your brain.  Your brain talks to your immune system via nerves that exit the spine.  Any misalignment in your spine can hinder the communication of those vital nerves.  The intrusion can be indirect, coming from twisted muscles, ligaments, tendons or cartilage.  However, direct interference, while less common, can also play a role.  This would mean nerve pressure caused directly from the spinal bones.

In fact, we can help your immune system work properly with several ways.  First, chiropractic care can take pressure off of the vital nerves that control your body’s defense system.  Second, the right dietary changes can help lower inflammation and boost your immune system.  Lastly, enzyme nutrition supplements help your immune system use nutrition properly.  Of course, we only make recommendations after thorough testing.  Furthermore, this testing is based on sound medical principles.

Shingles Vaccine – Zostamax – Is it Safe? Should I get it?

According to Center for Disease Control – Shingles effects about 1 in 3 Americans. While shingles can hit anyone at any age, it is most common in the elderly.  Shingles is a very painful viral infection that, in extreme cases, can lead to permanent impairment.  This leads to the all-important question: “Should you get the shingles vaccine?”

Shingles Vaccine – Zostamax – Is it Safe?

In order to answer this, I need to go over some key facts.  First of all, shingles is the same virus as chicken pox.  In fact, the medical term for this disease is Herpes Zoster.  The invasive virus is varicella-zoster.  As you may have guessed, that is why Merck named the current vaccine “Zostamax”.  If you had chicken pox, the virus exists inside you.  However, in most cases, your immune system knows how to deal with it and keeps it at bay.

Every once in a while, the disease “breaks free” from the grasp of your immune system.  When this happens, you have contracted shingles.  Common symptoms include pain, burning, numbness, tingling, severe nerve pain, blisters, itching, sensitivity to touch and a red rash.  In severe cases it can lead to permanent pain, vision loss, skin infections, and permanent neurological problems.

The Vaccine

According to the CDC, the shingles vaccine is about 50% effective.  However, the vaccine’s effectiveness increases with age.  While Merck, who makes the vaccine, recommends Zostamax for adults 50 and older, the CDC actually recommends it in seniors age 60 and older.  So, I bet I can predict your next questions.  What are the side effects?  Does the vaccine contain mercury?

In answer to your questions, yes, Zostamax contains Thimerosal, which is ethyl-mercury.  This ingredient is highly controversial.  Some say it is safe, while others say it is dangerous.  Since the most common (alleged) complication is autism in children, it probably poses little threat to the elderly.  However, I’ll leave the Thimerosal controversy for another time.  Or, you can decide that on your own.

Other side effects include (according to drugs.com): Pain at the injection site (51%), Rash at the injection site (48.1%), Swelling (40.4%), headache (incidence not known), weakness & low energy (incidence not known), cardiovascular disease, fever and death.  However, in the study, the placebo group had the exact same number of deaths.  That is, there were 793 deaths in the study group and 793 deaths in the control or placebo group.

Should You Get the Vaccine?

To be honest, I can’t advise you on whether or not you should get the vaccine.  Keep in mind it is about 50% effective, however, as you age the effectiveness increases.  As a result, if it were me, I probably wouldn’t even consider the vaccine until I was at least 60 years old.  Disclaimer: that does not constitute advice.  When any treatment, and I do mean any treatment you should weigh the risks and the benefits.  If the benefits outweigh the risks, it may be a good idea.  Otherwise, you may want to avoid it.

Are There Alternatives?

There really is no “replacement” for the shingles vaccine.  However, remember that if you contracted chicken pox, your body is fighting off shingles all the time.  So the real question is, “what compromised your immune system to allow the disease to take hold”.  While I don’t treat or prevent shingles, enzyme nutrition can help support a properly working immune system.  If your immune system works like it should, the likelihood of getting shingles goes way down.

Probiotics – The Germs in your Gut Explained

Probiotics – how the germs in your gut work.  By the way, it’s bad news for germ-o-phobes.

With rising popularity of probiotics in our culture, I think it’s important to explain what they are, and exactly what they do.  It’s also important to clarify how they develop and where’ they’re located.  The next series of articles will focus on these and other facets of the amazing bacteria living in our body.  Topics will include how being a “germ-o-phobe”, formula infant milk and even the cesarean section can be detrimental to the vital population of helpful bacteria in your body.

Let’s start with what probiotics are and where they live.  Probiotics are helpful bacteria that provide several vital functions.  In fact they aide in digestion, immune function, and they help keep a healthy mucous lining.

Where They’re Located

Most people think these valuable little creatures only dwell in the digestive tract.  However, many fail to understand that probiotics live in EVERY MUCOUS TISSUE IN THE BODY.  In fact, these locations include the GI tract, the nasal cavity, the lungs, and the female reproductive system.

So then why only add probiotics to the digestive system?  Actually, there are two answers.  First, because about 70-80% of the good bacteria in your body dwells in your gut. So by populating the gut you support the majority of good bacteria in your body.  However, there is another reason.  The only way to get probiotics in the system is through the gut.  So even if you need to help the lungs, the only way to do that is with a digestive probiotic.

Each microbe as a specific job

Because each microbe in your body has a specific job, it’s important to know which ones you’re deficient in.  This is why before we put anyone on a generic probiotic, we perform scientific testing based on sound medical principals.  This way we can determine exactly how your body is deficient and provide the right enzymes and/or probiotics to help your body work properly.  In fact I use five different probiotics in my office depending on the patient’s test results.

Now that I’ve given you an overview, future articles will zoom in on different aspects of your microbiome.  This includes who they develop as an infant, how to populate them, their job and why being a “germ-o-phobe” can be a detriment to your health.

Immune System Health and Enzymes

Immune System Health and Enzymes: Did you know your body has a defense system?  In fact, it’s called your immune system.  Its job is to fight off foreign invaders to keep you healthy.  Did know this vital system fights germs and infections all day every day?  Enzymes play a crucial role in keeping your body’s defenses healthy.

Immune System Health: Although we inhale and eat thousands of germs every day, the immune system provides protection.  This vital protection stops these germs from causing diseases. However, from time to time, a germ is able to break through our natural defenses.  When this happens, we wind up with a disease or infection. Once the immune system learns about these germs, it will fight them, and we get over the malady.  In fact, your immune system fights of cancer cells every day.

So just how does our immune system learn about and destroy these germs? There are different cells in our immune system.  Some of these cells identify specific germs.  Meanwhile, others coordinate attacks on these harmful bugs.  Yet others remember how to destroy this type of infection in case we ever encounter it again.

Enzymes are the Key

Now for the magic question how does your immune system do all of this?  Your immune system works through a careful balance of certain enzymes.  Some enzymes help your body make the actual immune system cells.  On the other hand, your immune cells release certain enzymes to break down a germ’s defenses and then desultory them. Yet others help clean up the “mess” or toxins left over from the battle.  As you can see enzymes play a key role to ensure that our body can fight off foreign invaders.

Keeping the immune system in working properly is getting more and more difficult.  The increasing amounts of toxic pollutants in the environment make this especially true.  While I don’t diagnose or treat any disease, I can help your immune system work the way it’s supposed to.  I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements, home exercises, chiropractic treatment, and positive thinking. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about your immune system health?  Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
