Heart Healthy Foods and Enzymes – The Total Heart Health Package

Most people fail to realize that heart health is about more than avoiding fast foods and processed foods.  In fact, there are actually heart healthy foods you can eat that support healthy blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and even prevent obesity.  Why is this important?  Because obesity, inflammation, and are the cardinal warning signs that heart disease may lie in your future.  So here is a list of heart friendly foods that support heart health and healthy body mass.

Oats and Barley

The first two heart healthy foods are oats and barley.  According to Pub Med, 2009, not only do these foods reduce cholesterol production in the liver, but they promote the creation of healthy short chain fatty acids.  Additionally, they show promise for supporting healthy immune system function.  For those of you who like the technical details, oats and barley contain a chemical called Beta-glucans.  Beta-glucans are polysaccharides occurring in the bran of barley and oats.  However, be sure that your oats are organic or steel cut.  Why is this important?  because otherwise the food company probably used flour to keep them from sticking together.  Flour, of course, is a simple carb that is notorious for causing inflammation, weight gain and high cholesterol.

Certain Seafoods

Other heart healthy foods include fatty fish.  These include salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring, lake trout, and sardines.  In fact, they also include crustaceans such as lobster, oysters and squid.  Furthermore, the high protein content in these seafood morsels provide a host of other health benefits.  These foods contain health-protective omega-3s, specifically the long-chain variety known as LC omega-3, which contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  All of these fatty acids lower risk of heart attack, and stroke according to Pub Med, 2010.

Additionally, human clinical trials show long-chain omega-3s to be very heart and brain healthy.  These trials strongly show that healthy omega 3’s help prevent heart attacks by helping the heart maintain its rhythm. Studies also show that they also make blood less likely to clot, lower blood pressure, keep blood vessels healthy and less likely to narrow, reduce triglycerides and lower inflammation.  However, a high simple carb diet will not only stop this process, but reverse it as well.  See my previous article for more information.

Where do Enzyme fit in?

So, you’re eating a healthy diet.  You exercise properly and regularly.  How in the world can enzymes support healthy heart function?  I’m glad you asked.  In fact, they support healthy heart function two ways.  First, the right digestive enzyme supplements help your body break down, digest, and absorb the fatty acids from omega-3’s and the protein and complex carbs from barley and oats.  Afterwards, the right systemic enzyme supplements help your heart, brain and blood vessels utilize this vital nutrition.  Additionally, the right enzyme supplements support healthy low inflammation levels.  So, how do we know what enzyme supplements are right for you?  Through testing that is scientifically sound and based on fundamental medical principles.
