Before I continue, let me give you some real statistics about scoliosis in America.  This malady is the most common spinal deformity in school-age children. (Chiro & Osteo. 2005). Additionally, experts estimate the number of cases in the United States as greater than 4 million. (National Scoliosis Foundation) Childhood scoliosis leads to 442,900 office visits, 133,300 hospital visits, and 17,500 emergency room visits. (HCUP-AHRQ 2011). And surprisingly, surgeons perform about 29,000 surgeries on adolescents every year in the United States to fix this major problem. (WJO 2015)

Scoliosis can be Serious

In addition to serious problems with breathing, heart health and digestive health (Mayo Clinic), over 63% of patients with scoliosis suffer from chronic back pain.  However, research shows that spinal corrections provide a cost-effective viable solution.  As a result, there is no need to let your child suffer needlessly.   In fact, the sooner you take action, the easier it is to fix.  There even comes a point in time where we can’t fix it.  Lastly, if this condition gets bad enough, it can hinder lung and heart function.  When this happens, surgery to place steel rods along the spine to brace it in place may be your child’s only option.  Sadly, sometimes these titanium rods can even break.

So, how can you tell if your child has a scoliosis?  Furthermore, how can you tell how bad it is? Actually, we look at X-rays.  Specifically, we look at the angle of bend in the spine.  This is called the “Cobbs Angle.”  This will tell me how severe your scoliosis is.  From there I can determine if you’re a good candidate for care, or if surgery is your only option.  If you already have X-Rays, I can look them over to see if I can help you.  If you don’t have a picture, I can order them after a thorough examination.

A Combined Approach for Better Results

If you are a good candidate for care, I will perform a thorough examination, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.  With our unique combination of traditional or low-force spinal corrections with the right home-care exercise program, we have a good chance of correcting your child’s scoliosis.  However, it’s important to remember that the longer the problem is there, the harder it is to correct.  So, if you suspect your child has this problem, it’s important to evaluate and treat it right away.  If you’re not a good candidate, I will refer you to the right specialists.

Are you concerned about your child’s spinal health?
