Chiropractic Helps Digestion

Chiropractic Helps Digestion.  Did you know that the best selling meds in America are for indigestion? These include antacids, and acid blockers.  However, most people don’t realize how dangerous these meds are.  In fact, they can lead to osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, and infections.  Additionally, this information comes from the FDA’s own web site.  However, there are alternatives.  One of these effective choices is chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Helps Digestion.  According to News Target, Americans like you spend over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs for digestive problems.  You turn to these harmful meds with the hopes of relieving heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other gut problems. Sadly, these are only symptoms of abnormal digestion.  Additionally, they are on the rise in our society. However, there is an alternative to these harmful medications.  Research shows that chiropractic helps digestion.  In fact, Chiropractic Technique (1996, 1994 and 1993), Chiropractic Pediatrics (1993), and Clinical Chiropractic (2008) all published research showing digestion improvement with care.

So, I bet I know what you’re thinking. “Just how can adjustments help with digestion?  After all they’re just for back pain, right?”  While that seems to be the popular idea, chiropractic actually has very little to do with pain.  Why?  Because our precise spinal care takes pressure off of vital nerves.  While over 92% of these nerves control every function in your body, including your digestion, less than 8% deal with pain.  In fact, your digestion is controlled by two main nerves.  First, the vagus nerve, which comes from the brain stem controls the first 2/3’s of your colon.  Afterwards, sacral nerves control the remainder of your colon.

On top of that, spinal nerves control your stomach, gall bladder, pancreas, and small intestines.  All of these are organs are critical for digestive health.  Taking pressure off of these important nerves helps brain messages control your gut.  This, in turn, helps your digestion.  However, there’s another wrinkle in this system.  There’s another part of your nervous system that shuts down digestion.  That system is your fight or flight system.  Furthermore, stress activates this system, which shuts down digestion.  Know anyone with stress?  In fact, irritation to this system can also activate this system brining digestion to a halt.   Fortunately, research also shows chiropractic lowers levels stress chemicals.  As a result, lowering stress chemicals through spinal care can also aid digestion.

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we will do a thorough evaluation to get a complete picture of your overall digestive health. Once we have the results, we will work with you in three ways.  Of course, it’s important to remember that our tests are based on sound medical principles.  First, we will coach you through dietary changes.  Second, we will also recommend the right natural enzyme supplements to support healthy digestion.  Lastly, our safe and specific spinal corrections can help lower stress and take pressure off of vital nerves.  And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including digestive diseases), I can help your body break down food properly.

Heartburn Drugs Shorten Your Life.  In fact the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published research on July 4th of 2017.  This research clearly outlines the many health risks that come from taking protein pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Prilosec and omeprazole.  If you follow my articles, you already know about some of them, which include cancer, kidney failure, osteoporosis, heart failure and disease and increased risk of certain infections.  According to the BMJ, we can now add pneumonia, dementia and bone fractures to the list.

According to  Consumer Reports, PPIs are one of the highest-selling drugs in the U.S. In fact sales were $9.5 billion in 2014.  Not only do they have some serious long term effects, they are also habit forming.  That is, once you start taking PPIs, your body develops a dependency to them.  In addition, the BMJ also concludes that people who used proton-pump inhibitors experienced a 25% heightened risk of death from all causes.  Consumers turn to this questionable drug to ease symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and GERD.

When questioned, AstraZeneca, a maker of two popular PPIs, made the following statement:
“We are confident in the safety and efficacy of Nexium and Prilosec when used in accordance with the FDA approved label, which has been established through numerous clinical trials,” said Alexandra Engel, a spokeswoman for AstraZeneca.  This company was not involved in the new study.

Our Approach

Your acid production is a direct result of your digestive health. And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including heartburn, acid reflux or GERD), I can help support healthy digestion. And of course this, in turn, promotes healthy stomach acid levels. I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about stomach health? Is your condition painful when it hits?  Are you missing out on work family or fun? Or are you constantly “popping” antacids or PPI’s?   If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation.
