5 Vital Plant Nutrients

There are many vital plant nutrients – you won’t find them in meat.

Vital Plant Nutrients.  While meat is an essential food for most of use, we Americans tend to eat way too much of it.  Additionally, most of the meat in our country is not very healthy for a whole host of reasons.  And then there’s the controversial issue of morality.  That is, how these animals are being treated while they’re alive.  But today we’re going to switch gears and talk about some vital nutrients you can only get from plants.  That is of course, vital plant nutrients.

Here they are…

1.  Vitamin C – Cooked animal foods usually contain helpful amounts of many essential vitamins except vitamin C. This vitamin acts as a powerful antioxidant and a cofactor for many enzymes in your body.  Your connective tissue (ligaments, tendons and cartilage) also requires Vitamin C.

2. Quercetin – This chemical is one of the most common flavonoids.  As a result, high intake of which has been associated with lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease.  Rich plant sources of quercetin include apples, peppers, grapes, dark cherries and berries, tomatoes, cruciferous veggies, leafy green veggies, and citrus fruits as well as green tea.

3. Catechins – are bioflavonoids. Green tea catechins,  are widely studied for their health benefits.  They have been associated with healthy blood pressure, improved blood vessel function and lower blood cholesterol.  Many fruits and beverages are loaded with catechins, major sources of which include apples, pears, apricots, peaches, grapes, tea, and cocoa.

4. Hesperidin – Hesperidin is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid, a phytonutrient that acts as an antioxidant.  Animal studies indicate that this nutrient may support heart health and cancer prevention.   You find it in lemons and oranges.  However, the peel and membranes contain the highest amounts. You can also find it in grapefruit, plums, apricots, bilberry, green and yellow peppers, broccoli, and whole grains, such as buckwheat.

5. Cyanidin – Cyanidin is a pigment responsible for the bright colors of many fruits and vegetables. It has a reddish-purple color and acts as an antioxidant.  Studies have indicated that these may reduce the risk of heart disease, however; the evidence is still limited.  This ingredient is found in colorful fruits and vegetables, including many red berries, bilberry, grapes, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, elderberry, cranberry, loganberry, hawthorn, acai berry, and raspberry. It is also found in apples and plums, and red cabbage and onion.

It’s not Enough to Eat Them

While these nutrients are vital to your well being, it’s not the whole story.  The fact still remains that they are still merely fuel in your fuel tank.  And yes, you do need fuel in your fuel tank, but you also need a spark in your spark plug.  Enzymes provide that crucial spark.  In fact you need several “sparks” along the way.  First you need to ensure healthy digestion and absorption of these vital nutrients.  Secondly, you need to make sure your body can properly USE them.  Because if you eat them, but can’t use them, there’s still a problem.  This is where enzyme nutrition comes into play.  Enzyme nutrition uses sound medical principals to support healthy digestion, absorption and use of crucial nutrition.  On top of that, remember that vitamins are only co-enzymes.  That is they cannot do anything without the right enzymes in place.
