Last week, a listener contacted me about their husband needing a colonoscopy.  In case you’re not aware, this is an arduous procedure requiring a fast the night before, and copious drugs to make the procedure tolerable.  Then they run a tube down your entire GI tract.  This procedure is invasive, uncomfortable, and inconvenient.

In this breakthrough episode of Dr. Andy’s Wellness Corner, you will learn the ups and downs of getting a colonoscopy.  Dr. Andy will also go over some alternative.  Of course, He will outline the pros and cons of each.    Dr. Andy continues with teaching you who should get their colon checked and why.

Lastly, Dr. Andy will go over how enzyme nutrition can support healthy digestion in the colon, as well as support healthy elimination and immune function.  As always, we accomplish this safely, effectively, and naturally and without drugs or surgery.

If you’re concerned about your gut health, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. In fact, you can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120.  While I don’t treat acid reflux, GERD, or heartburn, I can help your stomach work properly with the right enzyme supplements and dietary changes.

As it turns out, research from the American Association for Cancer Research shows that gut health can help.  However, how can your gut health influence cancer?  Let me explain.  Your gut health affects your inflammation levels.  Furthermore, tons of research form around the globe links chronic inflammation with cancer, and many other deadly chronic diseases.   As a result, when your digestion is healthy, this supports healthy low inflammation levels.  When you don’t suffer from chronic inflammation, your greatly reduce your risk of cancer.

Probiotics aren’t Enough

Armed with this information, I bet I can guess what you’re thinking.  Once you’ve read this, you’re ready to run out and replenish your supply of probiotics.  Am I right?  However, while probiotics are all the rage right now, they may not be enough.  If you’ll indulge me for a second, I’ll explain why.

You see, probiotics need a place to live.  In fact, they need a healthy place to live.  They require a healthy mucous membrane in your gut.  However, due to the Standard American Diet (SAD), most Americans do not have a healthy mucous layer in their gut.  This means you can hound down probiotics till the cows come home.  Since they don’t have a healthy place to live, they can’t thrive.  In fact, this is where enzyme nutrition comes in.

Enzymes Help your Body Rebuild your Gut

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we focus on supporting a healthy digestive tract.  Of course, this includes nutritional support for a healthy mucous membrane in your gut.  In fact, only the right combination of enzymes with the right probiotics help your body properly build a healthy home for these important healthy bacteria.  Additionally, since the Standard American Diet will break down this home, dietary changes are also key.

Are you concerned about your immune health, chronic inflammation, or helping your body avoid cancer*?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Digestive Health Problems and how it can impact your life.

Does that sound familiar?  Ok, maybe you don’t cycle like Mike does.  However, what have you given up doing the things you love because your digestive health is lacking.  This was Mike’s life.  Of course, it didn’t start out that way.  He started out simply missing a day here and there.  Then his problem progressed to a couple of times per month.  Lastly, it advanced to several days per week.  Mike’s passion, aside from his family, is cycling.  He is a life-long cycler.  Cycling gives Mike a peace and freedom he knows nowhere else.

Sadly, it all came to a halt when his digestive health problems intensified.  Mike is a patient in my office.  However, he started out as a chiropractic patient.  At first, cycling would aggravate his lower back.  The right combination of chiropractic care with home exercises alleviated his back issues.  However, Mike told me he was going from specialist to specialist regarding his bowel problems.  I told him about enzyme nutrition, and how it can support normal digestive health in a private setting.  While he wanted to discuss it further, I promised I would never pressure him.  Mike underwent a consultation.  The results showed promise that he was a good candidate for care.

He Wasn’t Sure…

However, Mike was skeptical.  After all, what does a Chiropractic Physician know about digestive health and nutrition?  I explained to Mike that I have over 200 hours of post-graduate education in nutrition alone, and that Medical Doctors these days receive less than five hours.  After that, I left it alone.  Months later, during a routine appointment, Mike explained that he was upset about his last checkup with his GI specialists.  As it turns out, according to Mike, the specialists took a lot of time explaining the problem.  However, according to Mike, they offered no real solution.  Mike was furious, “What’s the point of naming my condition if they can’t do anything about it?”

Mike finally decided to undergo enzyme nutrition testing.  In Mike’s case, he was lacking astringent enzymes in his digestive tract.  Additionally, the mucosal lining in his large intestine was compromised.  Together, these issues caused Mike’s digestive health problems.  Once Mike started taking the right enzymes and made the right dietary changes, he was back on his bike in no time.  In fact, Mike refers to his enzymes as “magic little pills.” (Disclaimer – his words, not mine).  In fact, I explained that there was no magic behind the enzyme supplements, only science.  The enzyme supplements help his digestive system work properly and support a healthy mucous layer in his colon.  However, he still refers to them as “magic pills”.

A Phone Call…

A few weeks later I got a phone call from a woman I whose voice I didn’t recognize.  It was Mike’s wife.  I met or spoke with her prior to that day.  She was in tears.  I asked her what was wrong, and she exclaimed “Nothing!  I just wanted to thank you for saving my husband’s life and our marriage.  He’s back on his bike, he’s happier, has more energy, and I love him like the day I met him.  I just wanted to tell you how grateful I was.”  I have to admit, after speaking with her, I teared up a little myself.

While every case is unique, contact us if you’ve been from doctor to doctor with no answers to your digestive health concerns.  Or perhaps the only solutions available in the medical field are surgery or drugs with harmful side effects.

If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120.  I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.  I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis, which is trusted by both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  This will help me determine if you are a good candidate for care.  If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Probiotics diversity and health…

Probiotics diversity:  Recent research discovered that our ancestors had more germs living inside them.  Is it possible that this diversity was the key to their health?

Probiotics diversity: When researchers looked at our ancestors the discovered several key factors about the germs living in and on them.  First, they found a more diverse population of germs.  Additionally, scientists discovered that helpful worms lived inside our ancestors.  In fact, the researcher suggests that these worms were just as helpful as the bacteria.

Now for the bad news…

Unfortunately, the study also shows that many of the helpful germs that lived in the bellies of our ancestors are extinct.  Sadly, bringing them back seems like an impossible task.  Additionally, while the evidence of helpful worms in their GI tract is strong, no one really knows which worms actually lived in side our ancestors.  Researchers only know that they came from a group of parasites called helminths.  As a result, some people now experiment with populating themselves with different types of helminths.  However, the type of worms they use are harmful, not helpful.  Sadly, this can lead to a host of problems.

What you can do Today…

Until researchers find out exactly what worms lived in our ancestors, you should avoid them.  In fact, the worms that lived in our ancestors may even be long extinct.  In the meantime, try to use the right combination of enzymes and probiotic supplements to create a healthy and diverse population in and on your body.  However, please remember these two key points:  First of all, these germs live in more places than your gut.  In fact, they live in your bladder, on your skin, in the birth canal, in the lungs and other locations.

Secondly, your body needs these helpful germs for immune health, behavioral health, mental health, brain health, digestive health and overall health.  In fact, they can even help your body keep allergies and inflammation at bay.   Lastly, it’s important to feed those probiotics with the right kinds of fiber from fresh fruits and vegetables.  We actually have a probiotic restoration system that helps your body repopulate a healthy and diverse population everywhere they should live; not just in the gut.

Probiotic Roadmap, your body knows

Probiotic Roadmap:  Ever wonder how your body knows what probiotics should be there?  Or how where each population should live?  Well, the human body is an amazing thing.  In fact, did you know your own body stores a road map of which germs you should have and where they should live?

Check out our radio show – Mondays 9-10 AM

AM 1150 KKNW, 1150kknw.com, or FM 98.9 HD band 3,

Probiotic Roadmap

That’s right, your body contains a complete germ guide.  This guide holds valuable information about the probiotics that should live inside of you.  It also tells your body where they should live.  These probiotics are crucial for digestive health, immune health, healthy genetic expression, and much much more.  As a result, your body requires a delicate balance of the right germs in the right amount in the right places.  In fact, the medical community deems some of these germs as infectious.  However, these bacteria only pose a problem if they are too abundant, or end up in the wrong area of your body.

So, where exactly does your body store this map?  Well, your body stores this valuable information in a part of your large intestine called the cecum.  Your body also stores part of the map in your appendix.  If doctors removed your appendix, you are missing some or all of that map.  Not only is your appendix gone, but the appendix attaches to the cecum.  As a result, you now have a scarred cecum.  Sadly, this scar tissue disrupts your probiotic map.  However, there are other factors that can affect this map.  Before I delve into that, I should state that appendicitis is a life-threatening problem.  So, I’m not criticizing anyone for removing their appendix.  Additionally, chronic digestive problems, taking strong antibiotics for an extended period of time, and even certain auto-immune diseases effect your germ map.

How to Restore the Probiotic Roadmap

If you live with a compromised probiotic roadmap, here are some things that you can do to help.  First of all, probiotics feed on fiber.  Before I continue, I need to remind you that healthy fiber comes from fresh fruits and vegetables, NOT WHOLE GRAINSIn fact, whole grains are actually harmful to the beneficial germs in your body.  The right enzymes can help your body repair the lining of the cecum properly.  When your body repairs this lining, it may restore your germ map.  If you’ve been taking antibiotics, once you’re finished, the right enzymes can your body detoxify itself properly.  This may also help your body restore the map.

Other ways to tell

If you suffer from chronic respiratory problems, yeast infections, or suffer from a weakened immune system, these are signs your probiotic population isn’t healthy.  Other signs include chronic digestive problems, allergies, asthma and even liver or kidney problems.  In each of these cases, the right enzymes can help your body work properly.  Of course, a body that works right won’t exhibit these problems.

Probiotics – The Germs in your Gut Explained

Probiotics – how the germs in your gut work.  By the way, it’s bad news for germ-o-phobes.

With rising popularity of probiotics in our culture, I think it’s important to explain what they are, and exactly what they do.  It’s also important to clarify how they develop and where’ they’re located.  The next series of articles will focus on these and other facets of the amazing bacteria living in our body.  Topics will include how being a “germ-o-phobe”, formula infant milk and even the cesarean section can be detrimental to the vital population of helpful bacteria in your body.

Let’s start with what probiotics are and where they live.  Probiotics are helpful bacteria that provide several vital functions.  In fact they aide in digestion, immune function, and they help keep a healthy mucous lining.

Where They’re Located

Most people think these valuable little creatures only dwell in the digestive tract.  However, many fail to understand that probiotics live in EVERY MUCOUS TISSUE IN THE BODY.  In fact, these locations include the GI tract, the nasal cavity, the lungs, and the female reproductive system.

So then why only add probiotics to the digestive system?  Actually, there are two answers.  First, because about 70-80% of the good bacteria in your body dwells in your gut. So by populating the gut you support the majority of good bacteria in your body.  However, there is another reason.  The only way to get probiotics in the system is through the gut.  So even if you need to help the lungs, the only way to do that is with a digestive probiotic.

Each microbe as a specific job

Because each microbe in your body has a specific job, it’s important to know which ones you’re deficient in.  This is why before we put anyone on a generic probiotic, we perform scientific testing based on sound medical principals.  This way we can determine exactly how your body is deficient and provide the right enzymes and/or probiotics to help your body work properly.  In fact I use five different probiotics in my office depending on the patient’s test results.

Now that I’ve given you an overview, future articles will zoom in on different aspects of your microbiome.  This includes who they develop as an infant, how to populate them, their job and why being a “germ-o-phobe” can be a detriment to your health.
