Digestion Medications may Cause Cancer
Did You Know Digestion Medications may Cause Cancer

Digestion medications may cause cancer.  Acid reflux, commonly known as “heartburn” has increased over 50% in the last ten years (according to WebMD).  As a result, sales of over the counter medications are also on the rise.  The go to medications for heartburn are antacids and protein pump inhibitors.  And as you might have guessed, Americans are spending more and more money on these medications.  According to IRI marketing research, Americans spend over 2 billion dollars annually on antacids.  Meanwhile protein pump inhibitors (PPI’s) yielded over 9.5 billion dollars in 2014.  Unfortunately most people are completely unaware of the dangers these medications pose.

How Digestion Works

Before we go into these issues it’s important to understand how digestion works.  When food enters the stomach the stomach expands.  When the stomach stretches it releases an inactive enzyme called pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid.  The acid then converts pepsinogen into its active form pepsin.  Now pepsin begins to break down your food. After a short time the acidic food travels from the stomach to the small intestine.  Once there the acidity of the food causes the release of several enzymes.  The gall bladder releases lipase while the pancreas releases protease and amylase.  While the food is in the small intestine lipase breaks down fat, protease breaks down protein and amylase breaks down sugars.  These enzymes need to break down the food into smaller pieces so you can absorb them into your body.

The Dangers

Now what happens if we reduce the stomach acid?  It’s important to remember that antacids neutralize the acid.  Conversely PPI’s block the release of stomach acid. Unfortunately either of these has some serious little known consequences.  Either situation reduces the amount of pepsinogen converted to pepsin in the stomach.  This means your stomach did not properly digest your food.  It also means when the food hits the small intestine, the low acid reduces the amount of lipase, protease and amylase.  This further inhibits digestion.  Now less of your food is absorbed into the body.  Additionally the stool is rich in nutrients.  As bacteria feed on these nutrients the stool is compacted and causes constipation.  Constipation leads to bowel toxicity which, according to a study by the Linda Loma Medical University, can lead to an increased risk of cancer.

Do you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux?  Enzyme nutrition can support healthy digestive function for a happier, healthier you.  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

After many years of clinical practice, Dr. Marrone has forged a remarkable career as a practitioner, educator and lecturer.  His extensive knowledge of functional enzyme nutrition has made him a much sought after practitioner.  If you are suffering from health problems that nobody seems to have the answer to, or are sick and tired of the revolving door approach of modern medicine, give Dr. Marrone a call to set up a consultation.
