Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean Diet

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  As you read this article, experts are presenting new research to the Alzheimer’s Association International conference.  The meeting takes place in London.  In a nutshell, experts found that found healthy older adults who followed the Mediterranean lowered their risk of dementia by a third.  The same was true for those who followed a similar MIND diet.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  According to the lead author, eating a healthy plant-based diet improves your ability to think.  This improvement lowers your risk of thinking diseases by up to 35%.  This information comes from the lead author, Claire McEvoy.  The research comes from the University of California.  Specifically, it originates from Francisco’s school of Medicine.  Because the study was nationwide, and focused on an older population, the findings apply to the general public.

“While 35% is a greater than expected decrease for a lifestyle choice, I am not surprised,” said Rudolph Tanzi.  Rudolph directs the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Rudolph also recently co-authored a book with Deepak Chopra on genes and aging.  In addition, “the activity of our genes is highly dependent on four main factors: diet, exercise, sleep and stress management,” said Tanzi.  “Of these, perhaps diet is most important.”

In Summary

The study investigated the diets of approximately 6,000 older Americans with an average age of 65.   In fact, researchers found that those who followed the MIND or Mediterranean diet had between a 30% to 35% lower risk of brain impairment.  Furthermore, the more people stayed on those diets, the better their brain function was.

Fried Potatoes – eating them increases the risk of death

Eating Fried Potatoes comes with the increased risk of death.  According to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, those who eat fried potatoes on a regular basis do not live as long.  In fact, scientists published the study just this year (2017).

Fried Potatoes: In the study, there were several test groups.  These groups were divided by how often the subjects ate fried potatoes.  In addition, experts created two control groups.  One control group ate zero potatoes while the other ate potatoes, but not fried potatoes.  The study involved over 4000 participants.  When scientists analyzed the data, here’s what they discovered.  Participants who ate fried potatoes twice a week or more were at the highest increased risk of mortality.  However, subjects who consumed unfried potatoes were not at risk.  The study concludes that eating fried potatoes on a regular basis does seem to shorten your life.

What you put into your body plays such a crucial role in your health.  But it’s also important to take a step back and look at not only what we eat, but how we prepare our food.  Too often I see people eating food that would be healthy, if only they prepared it in a healthy manner.  I’ll never forget I was at a nutritional conference one year.  One of the participants had announced they just started their paleo diet.

The funny part is, once they announced their “conversion” to paleo, they proceeded to open up an eat a bag of potato chips.  As someone who used to teach the paleo diet at several colleges, I can tell you there’s nothing paleo about potato chips.

Cucumbers Fight Heart Disease Cancer:  Learn about some incredible compounds in cucumbers that can help fight heart disease and cancer.  In fact, according to research, these compounds have traits that enable cucumbers to fight diseases like cancer and heart disease.  Additionally, cucumbers are famous for weight loss due to their water, fiber and low calorie content.
