While obesity is gaining traction world-wide, can you guess who the leader is?  That’s right, it’s the United States.  In fact, the U.S. has been leading the way to obesity for decades.  As more and more countries adapt the American lifestyle, including poor diet, over 1/3 of the entire planet is overweight.

The new study attributes the cause of this growing epidemic to urbanization, poor diets and reduced physical activity.  In other words, the “modern lifestyle” is to blame.  And just why is that so important?  Obesity is the number one cause of our nation’s leading killers.  As obesity spreads, so will the deadly chronic diseases it causes. Of course the number one disease is cardiovascular disease.

The study comes from the New England Journal of Medicine.

While obesity levels have risen in all countries, income level does not seem to play a role.  This means the issue does not simply boil down to wealth.
“Changes in the food environment and food systems are probably major drivers,” they write. “Increased availability, accessibility, and affordability of energy dense foods, along with intense marketing of such foods, could explain excess energy intake and weight gain among different populations.”

If you need Help

While I don’t treat diseases (including obesity – assuming it gets classified as such), I can help support healthy body mass and composition.  I accomplish this through a customized exercise program, dietary coaching, and the right enzyme supplements. Remember that healthy body mass is not just something you attain to look better, it helps you live a longer higher quality life.  It also drastically lowers the risk of many deadly diseases.  We can even look at your body composition with our BIA analyzer.  This can tell us your muscle mass, fat mass, bone mineral content and much much more.  Learn more here.

Are you concerned about your body mass?  Does it affect your job, family or fun? Are you worried about the long term affects?  If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Chronic Diseases a Crisis in the U.S.

Chronic Diseases – a Crisis in the U.S. – Chronic diseases are steadily increasing in the U.S.  Sadly, experts predict that about 50% of all Americans will suffer at least one chronic disease by 2030.  Yes, you read that right about one half of all Americans will suffer at least one chronic disease by 2030.

Chronic Diseases – a Crisis in the U.S. – So what exactly is a chronic disease?  Chronic diseases are a set of long term illnesses such as heart disease, asthma, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many more.  While some state they are incurable, the CDC reports that many of these are reversible and avoidable.  But before I get into that, let me provide you with some more powerful statistics.  First of all, did you know that chronic disease is the number one cause of death in the United States?  Currently, about 133 million Americans suffer from at least one chronic disease (Rand Corp).  Secondly, chronic diseases are responsible for seven out of every 10 deaths in the U.S.  In fact, chronic disease kills more than 1.7 million Americans every year (CDC).

In addition to shortening your life, chronic diseases can be disabling and reduce your quality of life.  The risk is even greater if the disease goes undiagnosed or untreated.  In fact, did you know that every 30 doctors amputate a lower limb as a consequence of diabetes?  In addition to physical suffering, chronic diseases also play a serious economic toll on the United States. in fact, chronic diseases account for 81% of hospital admissions; 91% of all prescriptions filled; and 76% of all physician visits in the U.S (RWJF).  According to Kaiser, health care premiums for employer-sponsored family coverage have increased by more than 87% since 2000.

 Prevention is Best

While the best solution is prevention, if you catch most of these problems early enough you can reverse them.  Fortunately, the solution is the same for either.  It’s eat well, move well and think well.  After all the number one cause of chronic disease is stress.  And there are three forms of stress.  They include mechanical stress, nutritional stress and emotional stress.  Sadly, your body doesn’t know the difference between them.  As a result your body responds to each of them the same way.

Worried?  Let us Help

While I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including chronic diseases), I can help your body work the way it’s supposed to work in a healthy way.  I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements, home exercises, chiropractic treatment, and positive thinking. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to subside? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

In fact, did you know that in the United States, chronic disease and conditions account for most of our nation’s health care costs?   “Over eighty-six percent of all health care spending in 2010 was for people with one or more chronic medical conditions. (CDC)”   The total costs of heart disease and stroke in 2010 were well over $315 billion. Of this amount, more than $193 billion was for direct medical costs.  That is it did not include costs for home care and rehab.  Additionally, cancer alone care cost $157 billion in 2010 dollars.

Meanwhile, diabetes cost this nation $245 billion in 2012.  This includes $176 billion in direct medical costs and $69 billion in work absence.   Sadly, the total cost of arthritis and related conditions was about $128 billion in 2003. Of this amount, nearly $81 billion was for direct medical costs and $47 billion was for indirect costs associated with lost work. Last but not least is obesity.  Obesity cost the U.S. about $147 billion in 2008. Annual medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher per person than those for people of normal weight in 2006.
