Brain Health – Inflammation is the Enemy

Brain Health – Inflammation is the Enemy.  It seems we’re all trying to fight the inevitable.  Once we reach a certain age, we don’t want to get older.  In fact, many companies make a fortune selling the false hope of “anti-aging”, or products or services to make us look or feel younger.  However, you may want to start with your brain.

Brain Health – Inflammation is the Enemy.  According to research from The American Physiological Society, serious brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other serious brain problems are on the rise in the U.S.  To make matters worse, trends show they strike younger people each year.  As it turns out, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison discovered the cause.

According to this break-through study, your brain ages faster than the rest of you.  That’s right, your brain gets older faster than the rest of your body.  The faster your brain ages, the sooner you’ll develop serious life-limiting brain problems like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and many more.  However, I think I can guess the next question on your mind.  What cases this accelerated aging in our mind?

The Real Enemy to Brain Health

According to the study, the problem has to do with overactive cells in the brain that cause excess inflammation.  This inflammation speeds up the aging process in the brain.  In turn, this leads to the serious brain issues I mentioned earlier.  If I said it once, I said it a million times, chronic inflammation is the cause of chronic disease.  However, what causes chronic inflammation?  As it turns out, the culprits are physical, nutritional and emotional stress.

Prevention is Key to Brain Health

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition, we take a complete approach to brain health.  While I don’t treat disease, including Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, it seems that prevention is the key.  Especially since these diseases have no real treatment.  Furthermore, the key to prevention is avoiding chronic inflammation.  Through a combination of enzyme nutrition, and either traditional or low force spinal corrections, we can support healthy low inflammation levels, which can support healthy brain function for years to come.  Of course, all of our testing and treatments are scientific and based on sound medical principles.

Would you like to feel younger?  Are you concerned about your brain health?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even look over your x-rays to help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D, Enzymes

Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D:  Alzheimer’s is a frustrating and limiting disease affecting our elderly.  This horrible disease prevents new memories from forming.  As a result, it is not only difficult for the patient, but their loved ones as well.  Recent research shows that there may be a link between low vitamin D and Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D.  Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise in America.  Sadly, as our baby boomer generations age, this may be expected.  Alzheimer’s disease prevents new events and experiences from becoming long term memories.  Let me explain.  When you experience something new, it goes into your short-term memory.  If you use or remember it long enough, it will move into mid-term memory.  However, after enough recall, practice, or thought, these new experiences will eventually store themselves into long-term memory.  This means you can recall the information years later.

Research: Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D

If you suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, you cannot transform these new experiences into long-term memory.  However, you still remember everything you knew before the disease hit.  So, just how can vitamin D help, and where do enzyme play a role?  According to the World Health Organization, the Risk for Alzheimer’s is 122% greater if you have severely low vitamin D levels.  If your vitamin D levels are moderately low, you still have a 69% greater risk.

However, other strong research also exists.  The Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA), PubMed, and Neurology Journal all published articles supporting the strong connection between Alzheimer’s and Low Vitamin D.   You must also understand that your body can only get a little vitamin D from your diet.  The rest has to come from sunlight exposure.  But there’s another crucial step.

Enzymes and Vitamin D

Just what is that crucial step?  It’s enzymes.  In fact, enzymes play two key roles.  First, since Vitamin D is a healthy fat, the right digestive enzymes can help you digest and absorb Vitamin D properly.  Second, your body requires certain metabolic enzymes to help your body use vitamin d for brain and nerve health.

In fact, according to the Journal of Gerontology:  “Vitamin D is primarily synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight; smaller amounts are obtained through dietary intake. More recently, enzymes responsible for the synthesis of its active form have been found to be distributed throughout the human brain.”

The Enzyme Advantage

This is why we focus on enzyme at Redmond Ridge Nutrition and Chiropractic.  In fact, enzymes are the only chemical in the body that can actually do work.  Sadly, as you age, your body’s ability to make enzymes decreases.  Using the right combination of digestive and metabolic enzyme supplements can help your body digest, absorb, make and use Vitamin D properly to support healthy brain function.

Are you concerned about your brain health?  Does it affect your job, family or fun? Are you worried about the long term affects?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. Probiotics diversity and health…

Probiotics diversity:  Recent research discovered that our ancestors had more germs living inside them.  Is it possible that this diversity was the key to their health?

Probiotics diversity: When researchers looked at our ancestors the discovered several key factors about the germs living in and on them.  First, they found a more diverse population of germs.  Additionally, scientists discovered that helpful worms lived inside our ancestors.  In fact, the researcher suggests that these worms were just as helpful as the bacteria.

Now for the bad news…

Unfortunately, the study also shows that many of the helpful germs that lived in the bellies of our ancestors are extinct.  Sadly, bringing them back seems like an impossible task.  Additionally, while the evidence of helpful worms in their GI tract is strong, no one really knows which worms actually lived in side our ancestors.  Researchers only know that they came from a group of parasites called helminths.  As a result, some people now experiment with populating themselves with different types of helminths.  However, the type of worms they use are harmful, not helpful.  Sadly, this can lead to a host of problems.

What you can do Today…

Until researchers find out exactly what worms lived in our ancestors, you should avoid them.  In fact, the worms that lived in our ancestors may even be long extinct.  In the meantime, try to use the right combination of enzymes and probiotic supplements to create a healthy and diverse population in and on your body.  However, please remember these two key points:  First of all, these germs live in more places than your gut.  In fact, they live in your bladder, on your skin, in the birth canal, in the lungs and other locations.

Secondly, your body needs these helpful germs for immune health, behavioral health, mental health, brain health, digestive health and overall health.  In fact, they can even help your body keep allergies and inflammation at bay.   Lastly, it’s important to feed those probiotics with the right kinds of fiber from fresh fruits and vegetables.  We actually have a probiotic restoration system that helps your body repopulate a healthy and diverse population everywhere they should live; not just in the gut.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean Diet

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  As you read this article, experts are presenting new research to the Alzheimer’s Association International conference.  The meeting takes place in London.  In a nutshell, experts found that found healthy older adults who followed the Mediterranean lowered their risk of dementia by a third.  The same was true for those who followed a similar MIND diet.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  According to the lead author, eating a healthy plant-based diet improves your ability to think.  This improvement lowers your risk of thinking diseases by up to 35%.  This information comes from the lead author, Claire McEvoy.  The research comes from the University of California.  Specifically, it originates from Francisco’s school of Medicine.  Because the study was nationwide, and focused on an older population, the findings apply to the general public.

“While 35% is a greater than expected decrease for a lifestyle choice, I am not surprised,” said Rudolph Tanzi.  Rudolph directs the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Rudolph also recently co-authored a book with Deepak Chopra on genes and aging.  In addition, “the activity of our genes is highly dependent on four main factors: diet, exercise, sleep and stress management,” said Tanzi.  “Of these, perhaps diet is most important.”

In Summary

The study investigated the diets of approximately 6,000 older Americans with an average age of 65.   In fact, researchers found that those who followed the MIND or Mediterranean diet had between a 30% to 35% lower risk of brain impairment.  Furthermore, the more people stayed on those diets, the better their brain function was.

Fuel AND a Spark

Of course, giving your body the best vital nutrients isn’t enough.  Your body also has to be able to use those precious vitamins and minerals.  This is where enzymes come in.  Sadly, as you age, your body’s ability to produce enzymes declines.  In fact, by age forty, your enzyme production goes down by around 70%.  If you think of food as fuel for your fuel tank, you can think of enzymes as a spark from your spark plug.  The best fuel in the world does no good without a spark and Vis. Versa.  This is why I specialize in Enzyme Nutrition.  The right enzyme supplements can help vital nutrition get passed an aged digestive system. Furthermore, the right enzymes can help aging organs and systems use those crucial nutrients.

Too Stressed Too Mellow?

Too Stressed Too Mellow?  Your brain manages your stress levels with a careful balance between two parts of your nervous system.  Understanding both, balancing them and keeping them healthy may be crucial to your overall health.

Too Stressed Too Mellow?  Did you know there’s a happy medium?  In order to understand this balance, we need to start with an overview of your nervous system.  While several ways to break down your nerve control exist, this article will focus on the automatic parts.  These parts are called the autonomic nervous system, or ANS.  This is because the ANS controls all of the functions of your body automatically.  That is, you don’t have to think about them.  Furthermore, these aspects of your brain are divided into two systems. They are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.  To keep things easy, we will call the sympathetic the “fight or flight” system.  On the other hand we’ll call the parasympathetic the “mellow” system.

Before I talk about the all-important balance between these systems, I need to briefly overview each one.  The “fight or flight” system does exactly what it sounds like.  I ramps up in times of stress.  It increases blood flow to the limbs, decreasing it to the gut, brain, sex organs, and immune system.  This, of course impedes concentration, digestion, healing and libido.  In addition, it releases stress hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine and nor-epinephrine.  It also increases your heart and breathing rates.  The original intent of this system is exactly how I’ve named it: fight or flight.  It is an emergency system.

On the other hand, the “mellow” system does the exact opposite.  This system increases blood flow to the gut, brain, sex organs, and immune system.  It also lowers your heart and breathing rates.  Lastly, it decreases blood flow to the limbs.  The “mellow” system also blocks the release of stress hormones like epinephrine, nor-epinephrine and adrenaline.  This system is crucial for everyday health.

Balance is the Key

Another important concept, as you’ve probably already figured out, is that these systems work opposite each other.  That is to say both cannot be on or off at the same time.  When the “mellow system” is turned up, it automatically turns down the “fight or flight” system.  Of course, the opposite is also true.  It’s important to realize your body requires both systems are necessary to stay healthy.  In the next few articles, I’ll detail each one including sings of over work, signs of deficiency and crucial nutrition vital to supporting their proper function.

Support Healthy Brain Function

If you’re too stressed, or too lazy, these may be signs of a serious imbalance between the “mellow” and “fight or flight” systems.  The right nutrition and enzymes can help both of these systems balance and work properly.  This is precisely what we do at Redmond Ridge Nutrition.  Through scientific testing based on sound medical principles, we can determine which system is out of balance.  Then we use the right dietary changes combined with the proper enzymes supplements to help that system work properly.

Are you always stressed out or exhausted?  Or are you lacking drive or motivation?  Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.
