pain medication and threshold
pain medication & your pain threshold

Pain medication basically raises your pain threshold.  Things that would normally hurt do not.  This is because the pain signals no longer cross the new raised threshold.  Sounds great, right?  The problem is your body knows the threshold is wrong.  Gradually, over time your body pulls the threshold back down to normal.

So you go back to your doctor – doc – it hurts again.  He or She either ups the dosage or prescribes a stronger pain medication.  The threshold is raised again.  But then your body adapts again.  Do you see where this is headed?

This cycle continues a few more times until somewhere along the line someone tells you you’re addicted and cuts you off.  So your body has been in a tug of war with this pain medication – each pulling against each other.  What’s at stake is your pain threshold.  Now you remove the medication, but your body doesn’t yet know to stop pulling.

Now the pain threshold gets pulled WAY DOWN.  EVERYTHING hurts ALL THE TIME.  Now the pain threshold will correct itself over time – but it will take time – so there is a PAINFUL withdrawal stage.  This is why, in the late 2000’s JAMA recommended extreme caution with pain killers (esp opioids), and this has been implemented nationwide.

Just Covering up the Problem

Taking this type of medication covers up the symptom of an underlying problem. There may be a time and place for that.  Let’s say you’re driving in your car.  The check engine light comes on. Taking pain killers is like disabling the light.  If this happened in your car you’d have the car fixed.  Yet in health many people choose to disconnect the check engine light.

If you suffer from chronic pain and nothing has helped, give us a call and set up a consultation.  We will take the time to sit down and talk with you about your suffering.  We will even do some preliminary testing to determine if you are a good candidate for care.  If you’re not, we will make every effort to find an appropriate referral.
