Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly used drugs in the world. These harmful drugs include aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and others. Many people use them for the management of low back pain. Additionally, about 20-30% of elderly people in developed countries take them frequently. Unfortunately these medications have some serious side effects. They can harm the liver, stomach, gastrointestinal tract and heart, and even cause death. Another serious complication is very well documented but not well known. Recent guidelines advise against the long term use of these products for back pain. Why? Because they can have a negative impact on cartilage. What does this mean to you? It wears out the disks in your spine.
According to Journal of Prolotherapy, 2010 these medications will eat away at your cartilage. Remember your back pain may be due to an unhealthy joint. Also note that joint is made of cartilage. The more you take these drugs, the more you worsen your condition. As the disc deteriorates it leads to arthritis of both the disc and the bone. Either of these can lead to serious disc conditions, or arthritis. If your condition gets bad enough it could require spinal surgery. Spinal surgery is both very risky and invasive.
