Medical Doctors and Chiropractic. When a patient asks an M.D. this question, here is the typical response: “Well, let’s get you over to physical therapy.” Did you notice the M.D. didn’t even really address your issue, or answer your question? Sadly, since this person is the “almighty all-knowing” medical doctor, many patients accept this advice without question. However, why does the medical profession simply ignore chiropractic? Unfortunately, there are several answers. However, the most common answer will shock you.
Education is Key
The first reason deals with education. As part of their medical education, doctors get almost no information about chiropractic. In fact, an open-minded medical school will teach that chiropractic may “provide temporary relief for minor low back pain.” However, while they can’t state it publicly, there are still many institutions that think chiropractic is “quackery”, despite mounting research to the contrary. In fact, I had lunch with a brand-new graduate from physical therapy school who said flat out that her school taught physical therapists that chiropractic was flat out “quackery.” In fact, I offered her a complimentary examination and treatment so she could experience care for herself. Sadly, she declined.
However, chiropractic can help with any aspect of your health. You see, our care takes pressure off of vital nerves. In fact, over 92% of the nerves control your organs. Most people don’t realize that only about 8% of your nerves deal with pain. While chiropractic can help with pain, its aim is improving your overall health and vitality.
Few Cross Referrals
The irony is that physical therapists love referrals from chiropractors, however, very few of them refer to chiropractic. However, there are some. In fact, I have a small network of therapists who cross refer on a regular basis. As a result, I am very appreciative of their courage to look beyond the false stigma the medical profession gives chiropractic. It’s really a shame, as physical therapy and chiropractic complement each other quite well.
The Safety Myth
Another problem is that many medical doctors don’t realize we have possess a wide arsenal of techniques. I think many M.D.’s assume we “crack” or “pop” every spine that walks in our door. As chiropractic evolves, more and more effective low force techniques become available. Of course, there’s also the myth that chiropractic causes strokes. However, a group from SPINE journal showed otherwise. SPINE is an orthopedic journal for medical spine specialists. This study proved that chiropractic poses “no significant risk for stroke“. Meanwhile, the birth control pill causes strokes in about 1 in 20 women. As a result, medical doctors and chiropractic should get along nicely.
Conflict of Interest
With all that said, the last, and biggest reason will shock you. You see, gone are the days of private practice. Now medical doctors, instead of owning their own office, work for a major corporation. That corporation wants to maintain as much business as they can. As a result, they don’t want their employees referring patients outside their hospital. Of course, hospitals don’t hire chiropractors. So, the hospital trained your medical doctor to perform a “bait and switch” to keep business within the hospital.
- Most states do not require any referral for chiropractic care.
- If you are not a good candidate for care, or if there are any special considerations, we will take the appropriate precautions
- Your M.D. is not your boss. You have a choice, even if you need a referral.
