Magnesium, it’s the latest craze.  A few weeks ago, my wife went in for her annual checkup.  After a thorough evaluation, the facility wanted to sell her some magnesium.  I looked up the research and found it support the opposite aspects of healthy function that my wife needed.  A week later, I did a health presentation.  Before and after the presentation, the audience was rumbling about the wonders of magnesium.  It seems that magnesium is the new miracle cure, or is it…

Magnesium seems to be the latest popular go to supplement.  Sadly, supplements follow fad trends just like fashion, music, and other forms of pop culture.  While there are benefits, there are also down sides.  The benefits are that we learn more about the ways a supplement may help support a healthy functioning body.  However, the down side is that the population blindly rushes to the store to take it, without knowing if it’s truly right for them.  It seems the need for hope has kept the old “snake oil” ideas alive.  And yes, I did say that to get your attention, there are situations where magnesium can support healthy function.  However, that does not make it a cure-all.

So, I know what you’re thinking.  It’s magnesium, it’s natural.  It can’t be bad, right?  It’s crucial to remember that just because something is natural does not mean it’s automatically harmless.  In fact, polar bear liver is totally natural, and high in vitamin A.  So, should we all eat polar bear liver?  Absolutely not.  It turns out that polar bear liver contains deadly amounts of vitamin A.  That’s right, if you eat polar bear liver, you will die of vitamin A poisoning.  And yet it’s 100% natural.

The Potential Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium has shown strong evidence to support healthy sleep habits, especially in the elderly.  Furthermore, a magnesium deficiency can cause migraine headaches.  However, I must urge caution here.  There are many many causes for migraines, so if it helps you, GREAT! But do not expect it to be a miracle cure.  There are even some sources that state magnesium can help your body’s ability to reduce inflammation.  Additionally, many mental health professionals are using it to support healthy mood to combat depression.  But it’s also important to note that there is not research on this.  One study (and I want to emphasize 1 study) found magnesium helpful in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.  Another study showed it may help with constipation by pulling water into the intestines.  However, any powdered substance will do draw water into the digestive tract.

Magnesium: the Side effects

Just because something’s natural does not mean it is free of side effects.  In fact, the side effects of magnesium include (according to Elsevier):

  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Unusual sweating
  • Breathing problems
  • Low body temperature
  • Unusually weak or tired
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

The role of Enzymes:

Even if magnesium is right for you, do you know what your body needs to make it work right?  That’s right, it’s enzymes.  Enzymes allow your body to properly use the vital nutrition it needs.  So how do you know what enzymes are right for you?  Different enzymes help your body perform different tasks properly.  As a result, your body requires specific testing to identify the source(s) of stress in your body.  Only then can the right combination of enzymes and dietary changes help support a properly working body.
