Infertility, the unknown problem.  Of course, there are many reasons for the decline.  Some are social, others economic, but still others are health related.  Since this is a wellness publication, this article will focus on the health-related issues.

Whenever a women comes into my office for a consult wanting support for healthy fertility, I end up asking the same question.  “Where’s your husband?”  The woman always looks shocked.  Once the initial surprise wears off, I explain how it takes two to make a child.  Unfortunately, when there is a problem procreating, the woman usually ends up seeking help.  However, the problem may not lie with her.  In fact, this next statistic will surprise you.

Did you know that the average sperm count in America is steadily falling?  According to an article in the New York Times, decreasing sperm count is a 50-year-old problem.  Sadly, there are many reasons for this.  The main ones include stress and diet.  The food we eat is higher in estrogen.  In males, estrogen decreases fertility.  Of course, this includes a decline in sperm production.

Stress and Infertility

Yet another reason for decreased fertility in both men and women is stress.  The chronic stress you live in today keeps stress hormones in your system much longer than intended.  These hormones aid your body in an emergency situation; fight or flight.  Because of this, these hormones take energy away from systems.  Why?  Because these systems don’t play a role in immediate survival.  Reproduction and digestion are just a few of those functions.  In fact, these hormones not only decrease fertility, but libido as well.

In women, the problem is two-fold.  The drastic combination of a low-fat diet paired with high estrogen levels in food causes a two-pronged problem.  The high estrogen diet works like a mild form of birth control.  In fact, many birth control pills work in a similar way by boosting estrogen levels, progesterone levels, or both.  Meanwhile, your female hormones are made from healthy fats.  So, by eating a low-fat diet, you are depriving your body of the raw materials it needs for healthy fertility.

The Right Enzymes

While enzyme supplements do not diagnose or treat disease, they can help your body work properly.  This includes nutritional support for healthy sperm production, hormone production, or even healthy stress hormone levels.  This first step is to conduct scientific tests based on sound medical principles.  These tests help us to identify the actual source of stress.  This can range from endocrine stress, an overactive stress response, or even the inability to digest, absorb and use certain types of foods needed for healthy sperm and hormone production.  Once we identify the source of stress, the right dietary changes paired with specific high-quality enzyme supplements may help your body work properly to support healthy fertility.
