Headaches and Histamine.  Did you know that about one out of every 6 Americans like you suffer from headaches?  In fact headaches are the most common medical ailment in the world.  When dealing with headaches, it’s important to understand there are a multitude of causes.  Unfortunately the common medical solution is over the counter drugs.  Instead of treating the cause, these medications only address the symptoms.  Furthermore, their long term use can cause some serious health problems including ulcers, liver failure and kidney problems.   Once these drugs fail, doctors often turn to stronger prescription medications.  Once again these medications only address the symptoms and can have serious side effects.

While it’s important to understand that medication has its place, this article will get into one possible cause for your headaches. In fact, for a small percentage of you, histamine intolerance may be the source of your suffering.  Histamine is most commonly known for its inflammatory response to colds and allergies.  However, histamine is also a neurotransmitter that aids in sleep, physiological function, and even sexual health.

Headaches and Histamine Intolerance

But here’s the problem.  The Standard American Diet is rich in foods that promote inflammation.  As a result, many of us have way too much histamine in our blood.  Normally, your body destroys excess histamine.  What’s responsible for this?  You guessed it, ENZYMES.   The responsible enzyme is known as diamine oxidase (DAO).  And where does it happen to work?  It works in the gut of course.

So what if your body is releasing more histamine than the gut can break down?  Obviously this leads to excess histamine in the blood stream.  In fact, your body is not designed to counter act large amounts of histamine.   Furthermore, new research shows that certain number of us cannot tolerate excess histamine in the blood.  This intolerance can lead to a host of problems including allergies, leaky gut, enzyme deficiency and headaches.  It’s also important to remember your body’s enzyme production declines as you age.

The Comprehensive Approach

While we don’t diagnose or treat disease, we use a whole person approach when it comes to your health.  We use a careful combination of enzyme supplements and dietary changes to help your body work the way its supposed to.  Our testing reveals the actual source of stress in the body, rather than managing symptoms.  Whether we are supporting a healthy immune response, gut health or healthy blood flow to the head we use a comprehensive approach to help your body work right.

Do you suffer from chronic headaches?  Does it affect your work, play or family?  If so, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120. Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
