Did you know depression medications may increase suicide risks? Mood disorders are serious epidemics that are on the rise in our great nation. So it comes as no surprise that anti-depression medication use is also at an all time high. In fact according to IMS Health over 41 million Americans take at least one antidepressant drug. Sadly, new research shows these drugs can actually worsen your condition and increase the risk of suicide. So does anyone else see a major contradiction here?
SSRI’s and Suicide
Much of this research was uncovered by David Healy. He is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed psychiatry papers as well as the author of many books. His research showed that SSRIs are responsible for about 4,000 additional suicides annually. But where does this data come from? This figure is based on previously unreleased clinical trial data. And yes, the drug companies are fully aware of these statistics. So just what are SSRI’s anyway? SSRI’s are selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. They are essentially antidepressants that increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
How was this missed?
Perhaps one of the saddest parts of this whole tragedy is the SSRI’s are rarely blamed. Why? First of all, there are no current laws requiring the drug companies to release this information. What’s worse is that drug companies are able cover up SSRI induced suicides. But how can they do that? By classifying them as some other form of death.
The Natural Approach
So what can you do to promote healthy serotonin levels? For starters try eliminating simple carbohydrates and increasing your protein intake. Consider white meats high in protein and tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid used in serotonin production. Maintain a healthy digestive tract. Enzymes also play a key role in the activation of serotonin in the gut.
