Like everything else, your ability to think, your memory, and all aspects of your brain health decline as you age. In this article, I will share what causes mental decline in the brain, as well as some valuable tools you can use to preserve your intellect, memory and brain health for years to come.
When you were born, most of your brain was an “empty canvas.” While certain parts of your brain are dedicated to vital functions, like your heart, breathing and digestion, the rest is pretty much a blank canvas. As you grow up, areas of your brain get filled in with certain knowledge, skills, and intellect. While the brain does have a default map or template where each type of processing occurs, you can override it. For example, if someone is born without hearing, the area of their brain that usually processes hearing will be used for sight or smell instead. With each new experience, our brain forms new connections. The more versatile these connections are, the healthier our brain.
As We Age…
However, as you age and this map or template fills in, it slowly becomes hard-wired. Sadly, the more hard-wired our brain becomes, the harder it is to form new connections. In simple terms, the harder it is to learn and/or remember new things. In fact, the medical term for our ability to form new connections in the brain is “synaptic plasticity”. Synapses are basically brain connections, and plasticity means flexible or ability to change. As a result, the older we get, the less synaptic plasticity we have. As these connections deteriorate, it gets harder to stay smart.
