Piriformis syndrome is one form of sciatica.  In fact a muscle, known as the piriformis muscle, happens to travel right over the sciatic nerve.  Sometimes that muscle can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.  When it does, you have all of the same symptoms of a herniated disc.  However it may not be a disc problem at all.  What’s more, this painful condition has several possible causes.

In case you didn’t realize, the Merck Manual defines piriformis syndrome as: the compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle in the back of the pelvis.  This, in turn, causes low back and/or buttocks pain along with sciatica.  Medical treatment is management of symptoms.

The Medical Approach

As you just read, the Medical Approach only addresses the symptoms.  In fact, medical intervention can vary from physical therapy, to muscle relaxants and pain medication to an injection into the muscle itself.  Sadly, none of these address the actual cause of the problem, and others yet have harmful side effects.

Our more Comprehensive Approach

In order to properly tackle piriformis syndrome, we must address it from several points.  Of course this is only after we rule out other conditions like a bulged disc or facet syndrome.  First, if the pelvis and tail bone are not aligned properly, this can put tension on the muscle.  In turn, that tension puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.  To ease this pressure we use specific chiropractic corrections to realign the pelvis and tail bone. Second, we need to stretch the piriformis muscle.  And with decades of yoga and fitness instruction, I can put together a custom sequence of exercises to stretch the muscle and stabilize the pelvis.  Next, manual trigger point on the piriformis muscles helps break up adhesions and scar tissue so the muscle can heal properly.  Lastly, enzyme nutrition provides the muscle with vital nutrients to support healthy muscle elasticity.
