Real Health Goals – A Case Study

Real Health Goals – A Case Study.  Perhaps the most difficult part of a consultation is educating the potential patient on how to set real health goals.  This is challenging because our society places so much emphasis on symptom relief or an inaccurate outcome rather than the cause of the problem…

Real Health Goals: A couple of months ago a patient came into my office concerned about their weight.  This patient stated they’ve always looked and felt great in the past.  However, as they aged they kept “putting on weight” and “tried everything to lose it.”  Sadly, they also reported nothing has worked so far.

The Consult

Well, this was my first challenge.  You see the first thing I had to do was teach this patient the difference between weight and body composition.  You see two people can have the same height and weight, which means their Body Mass Index (BMI) is the same.  However, one of those people is fit and the other has too much body fat.

After a long discussion, I felt I was successful in re-educating the potential patient.  In fact, they signed up for a program including enzyme nutrition, dietary changes and an exercise program.  After a about a month, the patient came back to me complaining they hadn’t lost a pound, and they were very disappointed.  I guess I failed to educate them after all.  So what in the world did I do?

Looking at the Real Numbers…

I performed a new BIO Impedance Analysis Test (BIA) and measured their waist.  In reality, they had lost 2″ off their waste, and according to the BIA, their muscle mass had increased and their body fat had decreased.  In fact both had changed about 14%.  BIA is an electronic device that measures many aspects of your health including muscle mass, bone mass and fat mass, just to name a few.

After taking these measurements, the patient did state that others complimented this patient on their figure. Additionally, they felt better and had more energy.  In fact, they just kept looking at a number on the scale they felt discouraged.   In a very understanding way, I asked them to switch their focus to a new set of numbers: waist size, percent body fat and percent muscle mass.  They were totally OK with that and have been a  great patient ever since.

Would you like to know more?

Do you have health issues?  Would you like someone to help you identify and address the real source of stress?  Does this sound better than treating symptoms or using the wrong outcome measurements?  If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120.  I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.  I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis, which is trusted by both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  This will help me determine if you are a good candidate for care.  If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

DAWC 051 Medicine and Enzymes can work together for healthier you

DAWC 051 Medicine and Enzymes

Medicine and Enzymes: Often times, people look to natural health care as an alternative to traditional medicine.  On the other hand, those who support the medical approach often turn their nose at supplements.  However, did you know they can actually work together?  In this episode of Dr. Andy’s Wellness Corner, your host details cases where patients used medicine together with enzyme supplements and diet to address health issues while supporting healthy function.

You see, medicine treats disease.  Conversely, enzyme supplements help stressed organs or tasks work properly.  As a result, there are several scenarios where medicine and enzyme supplements can work together.  Dr. Andy goes through several cases he’s seen in his clinic to illustrate this very idea.  In fact, there are several ways enzymes and medicine can work together.

How they can Work Together

First, medicine, while treating a disease, has side effects.  These side effects can stress other areas of the body.  In this case we can use enzyme supplements to help the stressed organs work the way they’re supposed to.  Second, medicine contains toxins.  These toxins can damage the kidneys and/or liver.  In this case, we can use enzyme supplements to help your body cleanse itself of the toxins.  Lastly, medicine can fight and infection or cure a disease.  In this case, the right enzyme supplements can support your body’s ability to work alongside the medication.  So, the enzymes can support your body’s ability to fight the infection alongside the medication.  Or, the enzyme supplements can support your body’s ability to counter the disease together with the medication.

Often, the disciplines of traditional and natural health are at odds with one another.  This is unnecessary as both have their place.  In fact, both can work together to help you achieve your health and wellness goals.

Infertility, The Silent Epidemic

Infertility, The Silent Epidemic – We hear a lot about man chronic diseases.  These problems include diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease.  While they are important and on the rise, another issue that remains silent.  According to the National Center for Health Statistics, fertility rates are steadily decreasing over the years.  In fact, it has been decreasing steadily over the past decade.

Infertility, the unknown problem.  Of course, there are many reasons for the decline.  Some are social, others economic, but still others are health related.  Since this is a wellness publication, this article will focus on the health-related issues.

Whenever a women comes into my office for a consult wanting support for healthy fertility, I end up asking the same question.  “Where’s your husband?”  The woman always looks shocked.  Once the initial surprise wears off, I explain how it takes two to make a child.  Unfortunately, when there is a problem procreating, the woman usually ends up seeking help.  However, the problem may not lie with her.  In fact, this next statistic will surprise you.

Did you know that the average sperm count in America is steadily falling?  According to an article in the New York Times, decreasing sperm count is a 50-year-old problem.  Sadly, there are many reasons for this.  The main ones include stress and diet.  The food we eat is higher in estrogen.  In males, estrogen decreases fertility.  Of course, this includes a decline in sperm production.

Stress and Infertility

Yet another reason for decreased fertility in both men and women is stress.  The chronic stress you live in today keeps stress hormones in your system much longer than intended.  These hormones aid your body in an emergency situation; fight or flight.  Because of this, these hormones take energy away from systems.  Why?  Because these systems don’t play a role in immediate survival.  Reproduction and digestion are just a few of those functions.  In fact, these hormones not only decrease fertility, but libido as well.

In women, the problem is two-fold.  The drastic combination of a low-fat diet paired with high estrogen levels in food causes a two-pronged problem.  The high estrogen diet works like a mild form of birth control.  In fact, many birth control pills work in a similar way by boosting estrogen levels, progesterone levels, or both.  Meanwhile, your female hormones are made from healthy fats.  So, by eating a low-fat diet, you are depriving your body of the raw materials it needs for healthy fertility.

The Right Enzymes

While enzyme supplements do not diagnose or treat disease, they can help your body work properly.  This includes nutritional support for healthy sperm production, hormone production, or even healthy stress hormone levels.  This first step is to conduct scientific tests based on sound medical principles.  These tests help us to identify the actual source of stress.  This can range from endocrine stress, an overactive stress response, or even the inability to digest, absorb and use certain types of foods needed for healthy sperm and hormone production.  Once we identify the source of stress, the right dietary changes paired with specific high-quality enzyme supplements may help your body work properly to support healthy fertility.

Gut Healthy Foods and “Prebiotics”

Gut Healthy Foods.  Do you suffer from digestive problems?  You’re not alone.  In fact, over the counter digestive medications are the top selling drug in America.  While you’ve already read my previous articles on the dangers of these meds, I thought I’d mention some things that can promote healthy gut function.

Gut Healthy Foods.  In the past, you may have read my many blog entries on the dangers of certain digestive medications.   These include over the counter protein pump inhibitors and antacids.  If you missed those articles, they are readily available.

  1. Heartburn Medication Health Risks
  2. Heartburn Drugs Shorten your Life
  3. Omeprazole and Osteoporosis

While very thorough, these articles say nothing of the kidney problems and stomach infections that can arise from these dangerous medications.  In fact, the FDA has even listed these risks on their web site.  Furthermore, I’ve warned of the risks of certain types of foods like nuts and whole grains that contain agents that destroy probiotics and enzymes.  Of course, these probiotics and enzymes are crucial to support healthy digestive function.

What I have failed to do, however, is list some gut healthy foods you can eat that may promote healthy digestive function.  Well, it’s time to remedy that problem.  So here is a list of foods that help your digestion work properly.

Prebiotic Foods

Here is a list of “prebiotic foods”.  They are rich in the types of fiber that beneficial gut bacteria thrive on: onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, asparagus, beets, cabbage, beans, lentils, soybeans, whole wheat, oats, and bananas.  Fermented foods like kimchi, and natto also have strong prebiotic properties.

There is also a popular beverage that can support healthy digestion.  And no, there’s no way it’s soda or coffee.  in fact, it’s black tea.  Research shows that black tea also has a certain type of antioxidant that can improve your probiotic population. As stated earlier these types of food are known as prebiotics.  Prebiotics help promote the growth of healthy microorganisms and offer a host of other advantages.  If you’ve tried these gut healthy foods and need more help, you may be an enzyme nutrition candidate.

If you need more help

Do you suffer from any of these problems?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we will do a thorough evaluation to get a complete picture of your overall digestive health. Once we have the results, we will work with you in two ways.  Of course, it’s important to remember that our tests are based on sound medical principles.  First, we will coach you through dietary changes.  Second, we will also recommend the right natural enzyme supplements to support healthy digestion.  And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including digestive diseases), I can help your body break down food properly.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to ease? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
