Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean Diet

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  As you read this article, experts are presenting new research to the Alzheimer’s Association International conference.  The meeting takes place in London.  In a nutshell, experts found that found healthy older adults who followed the Mediterranean lowered their risk of dementia by a third.  The same was true for those who followed a similar MIND diet.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Mediterranean diet.  According to the lead author, eating a healthy plant-based diet improves your ability to think.  This improvement lowers your risk of thinking diseases by up to 35%.  This information comes from the lead author, Claire McEvoy.  The research comes from the University of California.  Specifically, it originates from Francisco’s school of Medicine.  Because the study was nationwide, and focused on an older population, the findings apply to the general public.

“While 35% is a greater than expected decrease for a lifestyle choice, I am not surprised,” said Rudolph Tanzi.  Rudolph directs the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Rudolph also recently co-authored a book with Deepak Chopra on genes and aging.  In addition, “the activity of our genes is highly dependent on four main factors: diet, exercise, sleep and stress management,” said Tanzi.  “Of these, perhaps diet is most important.”

In Summary

The study investigated the diets of approximately 6,000 older Americans with an average age of 65.   In fact, researchers found that those who followed the MIND or Mediterranean diet had between a 30% to 35% lower risk of brain impairment.  Furthermore, the more people stayed on those diets, the better their brain function was.

Fuel AND a Spark

Of course, giving your body the best vital nutrients isn’t enough.  Your body also has to be able to use those precious vitamins and minerals.  This is where enzymes come in.  Sadly, as you age, your body’s ability to produce enzymes declines.  In fact, by age forty, your enzyme production goes down by around 70%.  If you think of food as fuel for your fuel tank, you can think of enzymes as a spark from your spark plug.  The best fuel in the world does no good without a spark and Vis. Versa.  This is why I specialize in Enzyme Nutrition.  The right enzyme supplements can help vital nutrition get passed an aged digestive system. Furthermore, the right enzymes can help aging organs and systems use those crucial nutrients.

Too Stressed Too Mellow?

Too Stressed Too Mellow?  Your brain manages your stress levels with a careful balance between two parts of your nervous system.  Understanding both, balancing them and keeping them healthy may be crucial to your overall health.

Too Stressed Too Mellow?  Did you know there’s a happy medium?  In order to understand this balance, we need to start with an overview of your nervous system.  While several ways to break down your nerve control exist, this article will focus on the automatic parts.  These parts are called the autonomic nervous system, or ANS.  This is because the ANS controls all of the functions of your body automatically.  That is, you don’t have to think about them.  Furthermore, these aspects of your brain are divided into two systems. They are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.  To keep things easy, we will call the sympathetic the “fight or flight” system.  On the other hand we’ll call the parasympathetic the “mellow” system.

Before I talk about the all-important balance between these systems, I need to briefly overview each one.  The “fight or flight” system does exactly what it sounds like.  I ramps up in times of stress.  It increases blood flow to the limbs, decreasing it to the gut, brain, sex organs, and immune system.  This, of course impedes concentration, digestion, healing and libido.  In addition, it releases stress hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine and nor-epinephrine.  It also increases your heart and breathing rates.  The original intent of this system is exactly how I’ve named it: fight or flight.  It is an emergency system.

On the other hand, the “mellow” system does the exact opposite.  This system increases blood flow to the gut, brain, sex organs, and immune system.  It also lowers your heart and breathing rates.  Lastly, it decreases blood flow to the limbs.  The “mellow” system also blocks the release of stress hormones like epinephrine, nor-epinephrine and adrenaline.  This system is crucial for everyday health.

Balance is the Key

Another important concept, as you’ve probably already figured out, is that these systems work opposite each other.  That is to say both cannot be on or off at the same time.  When the “mellow system” is turned up, it automatically turns down the “fight or flight” system.  Of course, the opposite is also true.  It’s important to realize your body requires both systems are necessary to stay healthy.  In the next few articles, I’ll detail each one including sings of over work, signs of deficiency and crucial nutrition vital to supporting their proper function.

Support Healthy Brain Function

If you’re too stressed, or too lazy, these may be signs of a serious imbalance between the “mellow” and “fight or flight” systems.  The right nutrition and enzymes can help both of these systems balance and work properly.  This is precisely what we do at Redmond Ridge Nutrition.  Through scientific testing based on sound medical principles, we can determine which system is out of balance.  Then we use the right dietary changes combined with the proper enzymes supplements to help that system work properly.

Digestion Chronic Pain

Digestion Chronic Pain. According to the National Institute of Health, about 5 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and Fibromyalgia each year.  In addition, many health care providers use these terms as a catch when a condition doesn’t fit the symptoms.  Sadly, no one really knows why or what causes it.  However, new research shows a strong link between digestive health and chronic pain.

The Medical Approach of Drugs

Digestion Chronic Pain.  And while there is medication out there, the most recent research proves it doesn’t work at all.   Furthermore, in 2013 the National Pain Foundation conducted a study on fibromyalgia medication.  According to this break through research, over two-thirds of fibromyalgia patients said their medication didn’t work at all.  And sadly, this medication is only for symptoms relief.  To make matters worse, the pain is often comes with other problems.  Many sufferers of chronic pain also suffer from fatigue, joint pain, poor digestion, sleeplessness, depression, and “brain fog” or the inability to concentrate or focus.

Despite this, in 2012, researchers from Johns Hopkins University estimated the cost of chronic pain as $635 billion annually.  That’s about as much as the combined cost of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. In Europe, estimates suggest that chronic pain conditions subtract 3% right off the top of their gross domestic product.

One of the most interesting aspects of chronic pain is its link to digestion. In fact, researchers are accumulating loads of evidence.  This new evidence suggests that certain forms of pain are the result of signals emitted by your gut when it’s not healthy.  In Cambridge, Emeran Mayer, is presenting results that suggest digestive influence. Emeran is from the University of California Los Angeles.

There is strong evidence showing the communication between the gut and your body is two way.  In fact, researchers refer to it as the gut brain axis, or the enteric nervous system. (see my prior articles). The autonomic nervous system, which regulates the activity your gut and other organs, sends out signals.  These signals affect your digestion, altering its activity. Then your gut talks back to your body in return.  When the gut is stressed, it affects this communication.  This, in turn, can lead to chronic pain.

The Key to Gut Health…

What most people fail to realize is that your digestive health can be the key to your chronic pain.  If your gut isn’t working properly, it can lead to a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome.  This in turn can lead to a whole host of symptoms including fatigue, joint pain, poor digestion, sleeplessness, depression, and “brain fog” or the inability to concentrate or focus.  When these symptoms last long enough, the most common medical diagnosis is fibromyalgia.   And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including fibromyalgia), I can help support healthy digestion.  And of course this, in turn, prevents leaky gut.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you suffer from chronic pain, muscle discomfort, fatigue, depression and brain fog? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. Enzymes help Sciatica.  Several studies provide evidence that the right enzymes can help with various forms of chronic pain, including osteoarthritis, sciatica and low back pain.  Studies enrolling a total of more than 400 people compared a specific enzyme to the standard anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of osteoarthritis low back pain and sciatica.  The results generally showed the benefits with the supplement to be about the same as with the medication. However, none of these studies included a placebo group.   Because of this experts require more research before they can draw any solid conclusion.

If you decide to visit our office for sciatica or related issues, the first thing we will do is sit down with you and talk.  The purpose is to find out the severity of your problem, and how it limits your life.  Specifically, how it affects your work, family and play time.  Then we will perform a detailed examination to uncover the root cause of your suffering.  If necessary, we will order any necessary imaging.  If you already have x-rays or MRI’s we will request them.  Either way we will perform a thorough review.  Once we’ve identified the cause, we will put a specific plan in place based on the type of impingement you suffer from. This includes the right specific chiropractic corrections, home exercises, specific traction and enzyme nutrition.  And of course, if you are a surgical candidate, we will provide you with an appropriate referral.

This combined approach has several advantages.  First of all, it helps heal ALL of the involved tissues.  Second, it helps your body digest absorb and use vital nutrients essential to tissue repair.  These tissues include bones, nerves, muscles (tendons) and ligaments.  When you address the problem from all four angles, your chances of success go way up.

Call us for a Consult

Do you suffer from low back pain? Do you have serious symptoms running down one or both legs? Is there numbness in the legs or feet?  Are you missing out on work family or fun? This can be a sign of a serious condition.  Please don’t wait.  Give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. Then we can schedule a thorough examination.  At that time I’ll order or examine any images and perform a thorough examination so we can discover the cause of your suffering.  After that we can either put the best plan in place, or provide you with the right referral.

Gall Bladder Health and Energy

Gall Bladder Health.  While all of the current rage seems to be probiotics for healthy digestive support, there are many other key components.   One of them is the gall bladder and bile production, known as the biliary system.

Gall bladder health and energy.  Perhaps the easiest way to explain how the gall bladder works is with the old oil and water example.  I’m sure you all know what happens when you try to mix oil and water, right?  Take a jar and fill it half way with water, and the rest of the way with cooking oil.  Now close the jar and feel free to shake it up all you like.  Of course the minute you stop shaking it the oil and water separate almost immediately.  As it turns out, you have the same problem in your body.  Your blood stream and most of the fluid systems in your body are water based.  But fat, which is a necessary dietary nutrient, is oil based.  So how can you dissolve this fat into water?  And yes this even includes the ever so precious omega three fatty acids.

Gall Bladder, Bile and Health

As it turns out, your liver and gall bladder solve this problem.  The liver makes a thick fluid called bile, and the gall bladder stores it.  When you eat fats, your pancreas releases digestive enzymes, called lipase.  Lipase breaks down these fats for proper digestion and absorption.  But lipase cannot penetrate these fatty oils without proper preparation.  In order to break down these precious fats, the gall bladder releases bile.  Bile emulsifies fats and oils so that lipase can penetrate these oils to ensure proper digestion.

When looking at dietary health, it’s important to remember that fats are a necessary part of your diet.  In fact your body needs them for energy, for hormones production, (including reproductive hormones), and for healthy brain function.  And that’s just naming a few.  If you no longer have your gall bladder, or it doesn’t working properly, it can cause variety of health problems.  Here are some early signs of gall bladder problems:

  1. History of gallbladder stones or surgery.
  2. Loss of appetite, especially for meat.
  3. Frequent sour taste in the mouth.
  4. Infrequent bowel movements (constipation).
  5. A light-colored stool.
  6. Gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort or soreness after eating

(Source: Dr. Howard Loomis, founder of Enzyme Nutrition)

Supplemental enzymes from a plant source are the most effective way to support healthy digestive function.  In fact, aromatic herbs can also support healthy liver and bile function. These are herbs that have a fragrant smell and an agreeable, pungent taste. Turmeric and ginger root as well as cinnamon bark are time-honored favorites. Also, the use of fennel seed dates back to the glory days of Rome, and lecithin is an excellent emulsifier (Dr. Howard Loomis).  Of course these plants only help with the right enzymes in place.

Finding the source of stress

Fortunately, there is a solution.  In fact, this is where enzyme nutrition comes in.  Enzyme nutrition uses sound scientific principles to identify the actually source of stress.  Secondly it seeks to help the stressed organs and tissues work better through a careful combination of dietary changes and enzyme supplements.  This includes nutritional support for healthy liver and gall bladder function.

Are you tired all the time?  Perhaps you would you like more energy.  Does a friend or family member?  Does it affect your work, play or family?  If so, give us a call and set up a consultation.  We will take the time to sit down and talk with you about your suffering.  We will even do some preliminary testing to determine if you are a good candidate for care.
