Vitamin D3 – the Controversy

According to research, only about 45% of Americans get enough vitamin D3.  Since vitamin D3 is necessary to absorb calcium.  However, if your body doesn’t have enough, it can lead to osteoporosis in adults, and rickets in children.  However, your body does not digest Vitamin D very well, and overdosing can lead to some serious problems.

Did you know your body makes Vitamin D3 from sunlight?  In fact, the UVB rays from the sun convert cholesterol on your skin into vitamin D.  Afterwards, your liver converts vitamin D into its active form.  However, what if you wear sunblock or sunscreen?  Well, I’ll cover more on that later.  As you tend to wear more clothing, especially in the winter time, and as you spend more time inside, your exposure to sunlight decreases.  As a result, your body makes less vitamin D.  Sadly, this can lead to bone problems in both children and adults.  However, new research shows that a lack of this crucial vitamin can also lead to weight gain, heart disease, and decreased immune function (Scientific American, 2009).

Supplements are not the Answer

As a result, more and more Americans like you are supplementing with vitamin D pills.  Unfortunately, your body has a hard time using Vitamin D from a pill.  Additionally, many are over dosing on these supplements with the idea that more is better.  However, according to the National Institute of Health, taking too much vitamin D can lead to kidney problems, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss. Additionally, by raising calcium levels, too much vitamin D can also cause confusion, disorientation, and problems with heart rhythm. Excess vitamin D can also damage the kidneys.

However, there is good news.  In order to get enough vitamin D, all you need is about 15 minutes exposure to sunlight outside.  In fact, this even works on a cloudy day.  Furthermore, you only need to expose your arms.  However, even this can be difficult on a cold winter day.   As a result, if you must supplement with vitamin D, use D2 or D3.   Foods rich in these forms include salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver, tuna, oysters, shrimp, egg yolks and mushrooms.

Digesting Vitamin D3

However, D, like vitamins A, E, and K are fat-based vitamins.  As a result, they don’t mix well with water.  Since your body is mostly water, this can be problematic.  However, your body has a solution.  Before your body can break down and absorb fats, your body has to emulsify them.  To accomplish this, your gall bladder releases bile salts.  These bile salts make allow water to dissolve the fats.  Now your fat-based enzymes can break them up for digestion and absorption.

However, let’s get back to sunscreen and sunblock.  If you remember from earlier, UV rays from the sun turn cholesterol in your skin into Vit. D.  However, sunblock and sunscreen block these UV rays.  As a result, if you’re wearing sunblock or sunscreen while you’re out and about, your body can’t convert the cholesterol on your skin to D.  What’s the solution?  Since you only need about 15 minutes of sunlight, stay out for about 15-20 minutes before you put on sunscreen.

Enzymes, Vit. D, & Fats

Let’s get into some possible pitfalls with all of this.  First of all, your body uses enzymes in the liver to convert Vit. D to its active form, once sunlight turns skin cholesterol into D.  Do you know what chemical performs this crucial task?  In fact, this type of chemical is the only chemical in the body that can do work.  The answer, of course is enzymes.  However, what if you either eat foods rich in Vitamin D3, or like most Americans, try to get it in a pill?  Then you may have to deal with digestive pitfalls.  In fact, if you’re over age 40 there is a 70% chance you can’t digest fats, including Vit D. properly.

In fact, there are several places you can experience problems processing fats.  First, the connection between the gall bladder and your digestive tract can get clogged up by protein.  When this happens, your body can’t emulsify the fats.  As a result, enzymes cannot break them down for digestion and absorption.  In this case, the right protein-based enzymes can help your body clear the blockage.  On top of that, your ability to make enzymes, including those that break down fat, declines 70% by age 40.  In this case, the right fat-based enzymes can help your body digest and absorb these vital fats properly.  This includes Vit. D.

How do we Pinpoint the Problem

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we used science-based testing founded on sound medical principles to locate the source of stress in your body.  This includes your body’s ability to emulsify, digest, and absorb fats.  It also includes your body’s ability to convert vitamin D to its active form whether it comes from your diet or your skin.  After testing is complete, the right dietary changes paired with the right enzyme supplements can help your body work properly.

Are you concerned about bone health, or your vitamin D3 levels?  Perhaps you’re concerned about overloading on supplements?  Are you worried about missing out on work family or fun? While I don’t treat type 2 diabetes, I can help.  If that sounds good, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120.

Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Obesity Causes Low Back Pain

Obesity Causes Low Back Pain.  While this fact seems quite obvious, research published in 2018 actually backs up this claim.  With obesity on the rise, paired with an out of control opioid epidemic, America needs a safe drug-free alternative.  Fortunately, spinal adjustments and enzyme nutrition can help.

Obesity Causes Low Back Pain.  Obesity is on the rise in the United States.  Sadly, its growth continues to increase at an alarming rate.  Unfortunately, so is our opioid crisis.  Is there a connection?  As a matter of fact, research from 2018 shows a clear connection between back pain and obesity.  If this pain gets bad enough, some sufferers may turn to opioid medication for pain relief.  However, there is another solution.

In May of 2018, JMPT published research demonstrating the connection between obesity and low back pain.  In fact, the study concluded the following.  “Overweight and obesity were associated with increased odds of low back pain.”

Unfortunately, this can create a viscous cycle.  Sadly, as you gain wait, you feel more pain.  To make matters worse, as you feel more pain, you exercise less because of that pain.  As time goes on, the cycle continues until it spins out of control. Later on in life, you go to the doctor only to find out you’re suffering from all of the complications obesity causes.  These problems include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and many more.  Conversely, the key is to take care of this problem long before these problems arise.

The Safe and Natural Approach

Just how do we take care of this problem safely and naturally?  In our office, we use a combination of traditional or low-force chiropractic care, enzyme nutrition, dietary changes and custom tailored exercise program.  First, the right specific spinal corrections can relieve your low back pain allowing you to exercise.  In fact, spinal adjustments can even improve your athletic performance.  Did you know that research from the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that chiropractic is more effective than medicine at treating pain.  On top of that, the right dietary changes paired with the right enzyme supplements can help your body properly eliminate chronic inflammation.  This is the leading cause of obesity.  Lastly, other enzymes can even help your body break down fat properly.

If You’re Concerned

Are you overweight and suffer from back pain, we may be able to help without drugs or surgery.  If that sounds good, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. You can reach us on the web, stop by our office in Redmond, WA, or call us at 425-868-0120.  Then I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. What Causes Type 2 Diabetes, The Real Problem

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes, The Real Problem.  With type 2 diabetes on the rise in the U.S. at an alarming rate, it’s crucial to really understand the problem.  Sadly, most medical treatment focuses on insulin.  However, would it surprise you to know that insulin is not the real problem?  Would you like to know what is?  Read on…

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes, The Real Problem.  The common type 2 diabetes meds on the market usually perform one of two tasks.  The most common help your body make more insulin.  Others help your body eliminate more sugar through the kidneys.  However, the safety of these latter drugs is now under investigation.  Nevertheless, what if I told you that a lack of insulin is not the problem?  Let me explain.

The number one cause of type 2 diabetes in the United States is something called insulin resistance.  What exactly does this mean?  It means that the cells do not respond to insulin.  If the cells do not respond to insulin, then sugar cannot leave the blood and enter the cell.  Of course, the end result is high blood sugar.  If the problem progresses, it becomes type 2 diabetes.

How Insulin Works

Insulin is a hormone that has many functions in the body.  However, let’s go over how it manages your blood sugar levels.  In order for sugar to leave the blood stream it has to enter cells.  However, sugar, like all solid matter, cannot just enter the cell.  This is because the cell has a cell wall.  The purpose of this wall is to allow the cell to be selective about what can enter and leave the cell.  This wall keeps the cell protected and healthy.

So just how do chemicals like sugar enter the cell?  Basically, it needs a passcode.  There is specific type of door on the cell wall for each type of chemical.  Of course, each cell has many doors of each type.  However, each of these doors needs a passcode or key.

Insulin is the key that opens the “sugar doors” to allow sugar to enter the cell.  The keyhole or password keypad is called an insulin receptor.  In order for sugar to leave the blood stream and enter the cell, insulin (the key) has to bind with the insulin receptors on the cell (the keyhole).  Once this happens, the sugar-specific doors on the cell wall open up allowing sugar to leave the blood stream and enter the cell.

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes

Now the most common cause of type two diabetes is SAD – the Standard American Diet, which is way too high in simple carbs.  However, a close second is stress, which causes chronic inflammation.  This, in turn, leads to insulin resistance.  Just what is insulin resistance?   Basically, your cells can increase or decrease the number of insulin receptors (keyholes) on the cell wall.

Insulin resistance is a reduced number of insulin receptors on the cell wall.  As a result, it does not matter how much insulin is floating around in your blood, there aren’t enough receptors for them to bind to.  This leads to the inability of sugar to enter the cell and leave the blood.  As the sugar builds up in the blood, the result is high blood sugar, and eventually type 2 diabetes.  In fact, this is what causes type 2 diabetes.

Help Your Body Use Sugar Properly

While I don’t treat type 2 diabetes, or any disease for that matter, I can help patients who are concerned about their blood sugar.  Actually, I can help a number of ways.  First, I can help you work out a diet low in simple carbs.  Second, the right digestive enzymes can help your body use fat properly for energy.  When your body uses fat properly, this helps curb your sugar cravings.  Third, and most important, the right enzymes can help your body promote an abundance of insulin receptors on the cell wall.  This will allow insulin to bind with more receptors allowing sugar to properly leave the blood and enter the cell.

If You’re Concerned

Do you suffer from type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome?  Is your blood sugar slowly rising out of control?  Are you worried about missing out on work family or fun? While I don’t treat type 2 diabetes, I can help.  If that sounds good, you can contact us one of several ways to set up a consultation. Healing Takes Time

Healing Takes Time.  You’re driving down the road.  All of a sudden, the check engine light comes on.  Of course, the first thing you do is make sure you can make it home.  Or, perhaps you pull over and find a mechanic nearby.  Alternatively, you may even call a tow truck.  Would you think of disabling the check engine light?  Of course not.  However, many Americans like you take this approach every day with your health.

Check out our radio show – Mondays 9-10 AM

Healing Takes Time.  All too often, a relatively new patient leaves my office because “they’re not getting better fast enough.”  Many times, this is usually after only one or two visits.  Additionally, it doesn’t seem to matter if the patient came for chiropractic care, enzyme nutrition, or even both.  Instead, they will often seek pain medication from their primary care physician.  While this medication has its place, it only covers the symptoms.  Sadly, it provides no healing whatsoever.  In fact, let me give you an example.

Let’s say you’re driving in your care.  All of a sudden, the check engine light comes on, and perhaps your car’s computer chimes that there’s something wrong.  Once this happens, what’s the first thing on your mind?  In fact, how many of you think of disabling the light and the chime as a solution?  Conversely, how many of you start to think about getting to the nearest repair shop?

Disabling the “Check Engine Light” in our Body

Sadly, many Americans take the first approach when it comes to our health.  Instead of trying to fix the underlying cause, many Americans cover up the cause with pain medications.  Unfortunately, that’s just like disabling the “check engine” light in your car.  In a society focused on instant satisfaction, few realize that healing the underlying cause actually takes time.  Unfortunately, few even “pop the hood” to see what’s wrong.  In fact, this is why the opioid epidemic is such a problem in America.

Before I continue, I do understand that there’s a fundamental difference between your car and your body.  Your body hurts and your car doesn’t.  In fact, your body still needs sleep so you can heal.  Furthermore, you can’t sleep if you’re in pain.  As a result, pain medication has its place for short term relief.  Meanwhile, it’s just as important to find and treat the underlying cause of the problem while you’re dealing with the symptom.  However, this healing takes time, and we live in a society that is not willing to wait.

How Long Does it Take?

If healing takes time, just how long does it take?  The medical community will tell you four to six weeks for one condition, six to eight weeks for some other condition etc.  In fact, here’s a list.  However, you need to remember these are AVERAGES.  These figures do not consider the key factors.  In fact, here they are.  How long has the problem been there?  The longer you suffer from the problem the longer it takes to heal.  Secondly, how severe is the problem.  Once again, the greater the severity, the longer it takes.  Lastly, how old is the patient?  Let’s face it, as we age, our ability to heal declines.  This can also impact the healing process.

Teamwork for a Complete Approach

At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic we can work alongside your medical staff.  While they are providing you with immediate relief, we can help your body heal itself properly from the stress that caused the problem.  Our doctor has several possible solutions.  We can use low force or traditional chiropractic care to help your bones muscles and nerves work properly, and heal from injury.  Additionally, we will provide customized rehabilitative exercises to further strengthen and stabilize injured areas.  Massage therapy can help break up adhesions and scar tissue to increase blood flow and promote healing.  Lastly, enzyme nutrition can scientifically find the source of nutritional stress in your body, and help those stressed organs work properly.  As I stated earlier, this healing takes time.
