There are many treatment options out there for a bulged disc.   These treatments include surgery, injections, physical therapy, chiropractic and non-surgical decompression.  Unfortunately, very few look to nutrition to support healthy disc function.  While these treatments are valid and effective, proper nutrients are vital to disc health.

It is important to remember that a spinal disc is made up of several key components.  The first is collagen.  Collagen is a combination of vitamin C and amino acids.  The disc is also made up of proteoglycans.  The main proteoglycan is aggrecan.  Aggrecan comes from of hyaluronan.  Both amino acids and proteoglycans come from protein.

Increasing your intake of protein and vitamin C may help.  This is,however, no guarantee.  Why? The disc must actually use these nutrients for repair. This is where enzymes play a vital role.  Enzymes are the only chemical in your body that can do work. Your body uses enzymes to break down proteins into amino acids.  It also uses enzymes to combine amino acids with vitamin C.  Enzymes are also necessary  to form proteoglycans.  Lastly, enzymes use these building blocks to form cartilage for disc repair.

The Natural Approach Supports Healthy Tissue Repair, Not Decay

I use a multi step process for disc patients.  First, I thoroughly review their MRI’s. I then perform a highly detailed examination.  From this, I can determine if the patient is a good candidate for care.  If so, I put the patient on a combined protocol.  This includes chiropractic care, a home exercise program, enzyme nutrition and intersegmental traction.  Intersegmental traction is a way of decompressing the disc without surgery.  I often co-manage more complex cases with an outside physical therapist.  Sometimes I will even send the patient to a consultation for a potential injection.  If the patient’s bulge is too extreme, I send the patient to a surgical consultation.  Lastly if the patient is not a good candidate for care, we will let them know and make the appropriate referral.

Do you suffer from a bulged disc, sciatica or low back pain?  Would you like to see if you can avoid surgery?  Give us a call and set up a consultation. We will take the time to sit down and talk with you about your suffering. We will even do some preliminary testing.  This will help determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we will make every effort to find an appropriate referral.

After many years of clinical practice, Dr. Marrone has forged a remarkable career as a practitioner, educator and lecturer. His extensive knowledge of enzyme nutrition has made him a much sought after practitioner. Do you suffer from health problems that nobody seems to have the answer to?  Are you sick and tired of the revolving door approach of modern medicine?  Give Dr. Marrone a call to set up a consultation.
