Infertility, The Silent Epidemic – We hear a lot about man chronic diseases.  These problems include diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease.  While they are important and on the rise, another issue that remains silent.  According to the National Center for Health Statistics, fertility rates are steadily decreasing over the years.  In fact, it has been decreasing steadily over the past decade.

Infertility, the unknown problem.  Of course, there are many reasons for the decline.  Some are social, others economic, but still others are health related.  Since this is a wellness publication, this article will focus on the health-related issues.

Whenever a women comes into my office for a consult wanting support for healthy fertility, I end up asking the same question.  “Where’s your husband?”  The woman always looks shocked.  Once the initial surprise wears off, I explain how it takes two to make a child.  Unfortunately, when there is a problem procreating, the woman usually ends up seeking help.  However, the problem may not lie with her.  In fact, this next statistic will surprise you.

Did you know that the average sperm count in America is steadily falling?  According to an article in the New York Times, decreasing sperm count is a 50-year-old problem.  Sadly, there are many reasons for this.  The main ones include stress and diet.  The food we eat is higher in estrogen.  In males, estrogen decreases fertility.  Of course, this includes a decline in sperm production.

Stress and Infertility

Yet another reason for decreased fertility in both men and women is stress.  The chronic stress you live in today keeps stress hormones in your system much longer than intended.  These hormones aid your body in an emergency situation; fight or flight.  Because of this, these hormones take energy away from systems.  Why?  Because these systems don’t play a role in immediate survival.  Reproduction and digestion are just a few of those functions.  In fact, these hormones not only decrease fertility, but libido as well.

In women, the problem is two-fold.  The drastic combination of a low-fat diet paired with high estrogen levels in food causes a two-pronged problem.  The high estrogen diet works like a mild form of birth control.  In fact, many birth control pills work in a similar way by boosting estrogen levels, progesterone levels, or both.  Meanwhile, your female hormones are made from healthy fats.  So, by eating a low-fat diet, you are depriving your body of the raw materials it needs for healthy fertility.

The Right Enzymes

While enzyme supplements do not diagnose or treat disease, they can help your body work properly.  This includes nutritional support for healthy sperm production, hormone production, or even healthy stress hormone levels.  This first step is to conduct scientific tests based on sound medical principles.  These tests help us to identify the actual source of stress.  This can range from endocrine stress, an overactive stress response, or even the inability to digest, absorb and use certain types of foods needed for healthy sperm and hormone production.  Once we identify the source of stress, the right dietary changes paired with specific high-quality enzyme supplements may help your body work properly to support healthy fertility.

Are you having trouble starting a family?  If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120.  I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life.  I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis, which is trusted by both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  This will help me determine if you are a good candidate for care.  If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Gut Healthy Foods and “Prebiotics”

Gut Healthy Foods.  Do you suffer from digestive problems?  You’re not alone.  In fact, over the counter digestive medications are the top selling drug in America.  While you’ve already read my previous articles on the dangers of these meds, I thought I’d mention some things that can promote healthy gut function.

Gut Healthy Foods.  In the past, you may have read my many blog entries on the dangers of certain digestive medications.   These include over the counter protein pump inhibitors and antacids.  If you missed those articles, they are readily available.

  1. Heartburn Medication Health Risks
  2. Heartburn Drugs Shorten your Life
  3. Omeprazole and Osteoporosis

While very thorough, these articles say nothing of the kidney problems and stomach infections that can arise from these dangerous medications.  In fact, the FDA has even listed these risks on their web site.  Furthermore, I’ve warned of the risks of certain types of foods like nuts and whole grains that contain agents that destroy probiotics and enzymes.  Of course, these probiotics and enzymes are crucial to support healthy digestive function.

What I have failed to do, however, is list some gut healthy foods you can eat that may promote healthy digestive function.  Well, it’s time to remedy that problem.  So here is a list of foods that help your digestion work properly.

Prebiotic Foods

Here is a list of “prebiotic foods”.  They are rich in the types of fiber that beneficial gut bacteria thrive on: onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, asparagus, beets, cabbage, beans, lentils, soybeans, whole wheat, oats, and bananas.  Fermented foods like kimchi, and natto also have strong prebiotic properties.

There is also a popular beverage that can support healthy digestion.  And no, there’s no way it’s soda or coffee.  in fact, it’s black tea.  Research shows that black tea also has a certain type of antioxidant that can improve your probiotic population. As stated earlier these types of food are known as prebiotics.  Prebiotics help promote the growth of healthy microorganisms and offer a host of other advantages.  If you’ve tried these gut healthy foods and need more help, you may be an enzyme nutrition candidate.

If you need more help

Do you suffer from any of these problems?  At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, we will do a thorough evaluation to get a complete picture of your overall digestive health. Once we have the results, we will work with you in two ways.  Of course, it’s important to remember that our tests are based on sound medical principles.  First, we will coach you through dietary changes.  Second, we will also recommend the right natural enzyme supplements to support healthy digestion.  And while I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including digestive diseases), I can help your body break down food properly.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to ease? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Nudexta pushed on the Elderly, Dangerous

Did you know there is a new little red pill (Nudexta) big pharma pushes on our edlerly?  This pill is a new medication called Nudexta.  What does it do?  Supposedly, it controls random laughing and crying.  Sadly, it also comes with a host of hidden dangers.

Check out our radio show – Mondays 9-10 AM

AM 1150 KKNW, 1150kknw.com, or FM 98.9 HD band 3,

or on a radio app from your smart device

Nudexta pushed on the Elderly.  The maker of a little red pill designed it to treat a rare condition.  However, despite the rarity of this condition, the company makes hundreds of millions of dollars each year.  Why?  Because it aggressively targets nursing home inhabitants.  Sadly, this drug is usually unnecessary and even unsafe, according to a CNN investigation.  What’s worse?  Your tax dollars are paying for it.

In fact, this new little red pill is called Nudexta.  Additionally, doctors use Nudexta to treat sudden and uncontrollable laughing or crying.  Actually, it is a disorder called pseudobulbar affect, or PBA.  However, according to the drug’s maker, PBA affects less than 1% of the population.  Sadly, the makers now use it for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and ALS.  You may have heard of ALS by its more common name; Lou Gehrig’s disease. However, the FDA never cleared Nudexta for treatment of these diseases.

The Drug

Just how is the maker getting doctors to prescribe this drug?  Sadly, the answer is simple and will shock you.  The company financially rewards medical doctors for prescribing it.  According to CNN News, “Since 2012, more than half of all Nuedexta pills have gone to long-term care facilities. The number of pills rose to roughly 14 million in 2016, a jump of nearly 400% in just four years, according to data obtained from QuintilesIMS, which tracks pharmaceutical sales. Total sales of Nuedexta reached almost $300 million that year. ”  What’s worse is that the drug has not been adequately tested on elderly patients.  Even more controversial, many patients report doing much better without the drug than with it.

While I want to be clear that medication does have its place, it is a tool.   Unfortunately, one can use or mis-use any tool.  However, when doctors mis-use medication, patients often pay the price.

A Different Approach

However, did you know there are other options available.  while some of you do rely on medications to manage or treat an illness remember they can damage your digestion, kidneys and/or liver.  In this case, enzyme nutrition can help support healthy function of these three vital aspects of health.  Second, while enzyme nutrition does not diagnose or treat disease, it can help your body work the way it’s supposed to.  If your body works properly, it is much less prone to disease.  Furthermore, if you are less prone to disease, you are less likely to need medication that has toxic side effects.

Do you need more help?

Magnesium, the latest craze…

Magnesium, it’s the latest craze.  A few weeks ago, my wife went in for her annual checkup.  After a thorough evaluation, the facility wanted to sell her some magnesium.  I looked up the research and found it support the opposite aspects of healthy function that my wife needed.  A week later, I did a health presentation.  Before and after the presentation, the audience was rumbling about the wonders of magnesium.  It seems that magnesium is the new miracle cure, or is it…

Magnesium is the latest trend, but is it right for you?

Check out our radio show – Mondays 9-10 AM

AM 1150 KKNW, 1150kknw.com, or FM 98.9 HD band 3,

or on a radio app from your smart device

Magnesium seems to be the latest popular go to supplement.  Sadly, supplements follow fad trends just like fashion, music, and other forms of pop culture.  While there are benefits, there are also down sides.  The benefits are that we learn more about the ways a supplement may help support a healthy functioning body.  However, the down side is that the population blindly rushes to the store to take it, without knowing if it’s truly right for them.  It seems the need for hope has kept the old “snake oil” ideas alive.  And yes, I did say that to get your attention, there are situations where magnesium can support healthy function.  However, that does not make it a cure-all.

So, I know what you’re thinking.  It’s magnesium, it’s natural.  It can’t be bad, right?  It’s crucial to remember that just because something is natural does not mean it’s automatically harmless.  In fact, polar bear liver is totally natural, and high in vitamin A.  So, should we all eat polar bear liver?  Absolutely not.  It turns out that polar bear liver contains deadly amounts of vitamin A.  That’s right, if you eat polar bear liver, you will die of vitamin A poisoning.  And yet it’s 100% natural.

The Potential Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium has shown strong evidence to support healthy sleep habits, especially in the elderly.  Furthermore, a magnesium deficiency can cause migraine headaches.  However, I must urge caution here.  There are many many causes for migraines, so if it helps you, GREAT! But do not expect it to be a miracle cure.  There are even some sources that state magnesium can help your body’s ability to reduce inflammation.  Additionally, many mental health professionals are using it to support healthy mood to combat depression.  But it’s also important to note that there is not research on this.  One study (and I want to emphasize 1 study) found magnesium helpful in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.  Another study showed it may help with constipation by pulling water into the intestines.  However, any powdered substance will do draw water into the digestive tract.

Magnesium: the Side effects

Just because something’s natural does not mean it is free of side effects.  In fact, the side effects of magnesium include (according to Elsevier):

  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Unusual sweating
  • Breathing problems
  • Low body temperature
  • Unusually weak or tired
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

The role of Enzymes:

Even if magnesium is right for you, do you know what your body needs to make it work right?  That’s right, it’s enzymes.  Enzymes allow your body to properly use the vital nutrition it needs.  So how do you know what enzymes are right for you?  Different enzymes help your body perform different tasks properly.  As a result, your body requires specific testing to identify the source(s) of stress in your body.  Only then can the right combination of enzymes and dietary changes help support a properly working body.

If you want answers…

Have you been from doctor to doctor with no answers to your suffering?  Are you sick and tired if being processed through the American health care system like a piece of cattle?  Is everyone coming up with a different buzz word for your problems?  Do some think you’re even faking it?   Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, contact us and set up a consultation or call us at 425-868-0120. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact, did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
