Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D:  Alzheimer’s is a frustrating and limiting disease affecting our elderly.  This horrible disease prevents new memories from forming.  As a result, it is not only difficult for the patient, but their loved ones as well.  Recent research shows that there may be a link between low vitamin D and Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D.  Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise in America.  Sadly, as our baby boomer generations age, this may be expected.  Alzheimer’s disease prevents new events and experiences from becoming long term memories.  Let me explain.  When you experience something new, it goes into your short-term memory.  If you use or remember it long enough, it will move into mid-term memory.  However, after enough recall, practice, or thought, these new experiences will eventually store themselves into long-term memory.  This means you can recall the information years later.

Research: Alzheimer’s and Vitamin D

If you suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, you cannot transform these new experiences into long-term memory.  However, you still remember everything you knew before the disease hit.  So, just how can vitamin D help, and where do enzyme play a role?  According to the World Health Organization, the Risk for Alzheimer’s is 122% greater if you have severely low vitamin D levels.  If your vitamin D levels are moderately low, you still have a 69% greater risk.

However, other strong research also exists.  The Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA), PubMed, and Neurology Journal all published articles supporting the strong connection between Alzheimer’s and Low Vitamin D.   You must also understand that your body can only get a little vitamin D from your diet.  The rest has to come from sunlight exposure.  But there’s another crucial step.

Enzymes and Vitamin D

Just what is that crucial step?  It’s enzymes.  In fact, enzymes play two key roles.  First, since Vitamin D is a healthy fat, the right digestive enzymes can help you digest and absorb Vitamin D properly.  Second, your body requires certain metabolic enzymes to help your body use vitamin d for brain and nerve health.

In fact, according to the Journal of Gerontology:  “Vitamin D is primarily synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight; smaller amounts are obtained through dietary intake. More recently, enzymes responsible for the synthesis of its active form have been found to be distributed throughout the human brain.”
