ADHD and Gut Health, vs. Medication

A recent article in the Neuroscience Letters focuses on a very troubling finding about ADHD treatment.  It has to do with the dangers of ADD and ADHD medication.  The study has raised serious questions about the safety of common ADHD medication.  Why?  Because these medications contain methylphenidate.  In fact, you may have heard of them.  They’re better known as Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Methylin, or Aptensio. However, a major problem is the long-term consequences of this drug are unknown.

This medication is the go-to medicine to treat ADHD.  And it is often given and used without second thought.   ADHD is a serious condition that can cause focus problems, energy, memory, or behavioral problems.

This study analyzed several aspects of brain health.  These included the memory center, cortisol, oxidative stress, antioxidants, and inflammation levels. Unfortunately, the drugs caused serious stress in the test subjects.   What’s worse, THE DOSAGE DIDN’T MATTER.  Surprisingly, ALL of the medicated subjects had increased Cortisol levels.  Cortisol is the main stress hormone.   Severe impairments were also found in Social and motor behaviors.  Even small doses of the drug produced a serious decrease in social and motor behavior.

The Safe, Effective, Natural Approach

Here’s the good news.  There is an alarming amount of new evidence about gut health and brain health. Amazingly, there is a direct two way connection between our gut and brain.  This connection is commonly known as the gut brain axis.  New studies show that gut health can have a huge effect on brain function.  It can even support healthy focus and attention levels.
