When Fish Oil is unhealthy. In my last article, I talked about the cholesterol myth. As a matter of fact I actually cited research showing that those with lower cholesterol have shorter life spans. But I also promised I would get into fish oils. Specifically when they are useful and when they are harmful. So here it goes, as promised.
Why Fatty Acids are Beneficial
First, let’s begin by going over types of fatty acids found in fish oils. The typical ones are omega3’s, omega 6’s and omega 9’s. Now the first thing you need to know is regarding Omega 9’s. Omega 9’s are non-essential. This means your body will make them on its own. As far as the other two are concerned, they are essential. This means you must get them from your diet.
So what does your body actually do with fatty acids? Under normal circumstances, your body converts them to eiconosoids through a process called the DLGA process. In fact enzymes are required to make that conversion. These eiconosoids are what “clean up” your blood vessels keeping them healthy. However, several factors can prevent fatty acids from turning into eiconosoids. And some of them are bad for your health.
How Fatty Acids can be Harmful
First of all, as you age, your DLGA process weakens just like everything else. Additionally frequent viral infections also compromise your DLGA cycle. However, if you consume too many carbohydrates, not only is your DLGA cycle interrupted, but the fatty acids covert into a pretty harmful substance. When you eat too many carbs, there is an abundance of insulin in your blood. Because of the insulin, the fatty acids you’ve eaten convert into arachadonic acid instead of eiconosoids. This acid is responsible for inflammation and clotting. Unfortunately, this is exactly what you’re trying to avoid. As a result, it is crucial to make sure you take fatty acids when there are few carbs “floating around” in your system.
