Inflammation fighting foods. As the holidays approach, many of your eating habits are really starting to slip. Sure, you want to eat right, but there’s just so much high carb foods out there right now like cookies and chocolate. Add to that your daily regime of inflammatory foods like pasta, milk, grains and gluten. So what can we actually do to combat this?
Gluten Free – The Common Mistake
The trend in our country today is to automatically target gluten. Gluten is actually a protein derivative which is only harmful if you are sensitive to it. To determine this make sure you actually get tested. The problem with going gluten free is that many gluten free foods are actually higher on the glycemic index. So if you’re not gluten intolerant you may be putting yourself at higher risk for chronic inflammation and even Type II Diabetes. It’s important to go gluten free ONLY IF YOU HAVE BEEN TESTED AS GLUTEN INTOLERANT.
Substitute Foods which can Actually Reduce Inflammation
Due to the increased demand of inflammation-fighting foods, manufacturers are developing some amazing new substitutes. In fact, one that came on the market a few years ago is cricket flour. Yes, that’s right cricket flour. It is low in simple carbs, high in protein and actually tastes great! Some inflammation fighting foods that have been around for a while include turmeric and cayenne pepper. However, there are some wonderful new foods coming to market that will give you greater access to inflammation-fighting foods. These include zucchini noodles, cauliflower rice, nut based milks and vegan cheese. In fact, Starbucks is even experimenting with a “chili mocha” with cayenne pepper.
