inflammation foods
Inflammation foods cause weight gain and many other health problems

Inflammation foods.  Because of the Standard American Diet (SAD), chronic inflammation is a growing problem in the U.S.  Why?  Because chronic inflammation can lead to a host of serious diseases if left alone.  But the good news is that many Americans just like you are becoming more and more health conscious.  As a result, you are also much more aware of the problems caused by inflammation.  So here is a list of thirteen foods you should avoid.

Inflammation Foods:

1. Vegetable oils: Vegetable oils that contain omega 6 fatty acids are notorious for inflammation.  Increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids help balance your ratio between 3’s and 6’s and support low inflammation levels.  Of course, be sure to see my prior post on how to do this PROPERLY.  (Nutrients. 2016 Mar; 8(3): 128.)

2. Dairy products:In fact many people are unaware that milk and other dairy products trigger inflammation.  It is also important to note that milk is hidden in many foods including bread, cereal, cookies and so on. Not to mention  60 percent of Americans can’t digest milk (which is genetically normal, by the way).

3. Sugar: Did you know there is tons of research out there linking sugar to inflammation, obesity and chronic diseases? Avoid table sugar and foods with added sugar.  And by the way, this includes almost all processed foods. (Mediators Inflamm. 2010; 2010: 289645)

4. Processed meat: And by the way, processed meat can also cause an increased risk of cancer. (World Health Organization)

5. Refined flour: Sadly, refined grains are extremely low in nutrients.  Not only that, but there is a strong link between them and cancer, weight gain, and chronic diseases.

6. Alcohol: It comes as no surprise that Long-term alcohol intake can cause chronic inflammation and increase risk of cancer.

7. Trans fats: Of course the media has “saturated” the market with information on trans fats.  In fact you commonly find these harmful fats in  deep fried foods, especially and fast foods. Strong research shows they are strong inflammatory agents.

More Inflammation Foods…

8. Additives: Common additives like aspartame are very strong inflammatory foods. Sodas, diet sodas, and energy drinks contain high amounts of additives.

9. Artificial sweeteners: Research shows that artificial sweeteners increase inflammation, and the risk of type 2 diabetes.  See my previous article on this.

10. Gluten: Gluten ruins gut health and promotes inflammation. Avoid foods that contain wheat.  But be extremely careful.  Many gluten free foods are high in simple carbs.  These also contribute to inflammation and type 2 diabetes.

11. Agave: While many turn to agave as a natural non sugar alternative.  But unfortunately this is a mistake.  In fact, Agave is 90 percent sugar. It has been proven to cause inflammation, fast aging, and chronic diseases.  Unfortunately it has been touted as a natural sugar alternative.  But sadly, it is pretty much just sugar itself.

12. Peanuts: Peanuts cause a strong inflammatory response in the body.  They also contain aflatoxin.  Do you know what that is?  In fact, researchers use aflatoxin to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

13. Iodized salt: In fact unrefined salt is a better choice because it contains lots of minerals. Iodized salt has been proven to cause inflammation. But make sure you get plenty of iodine from foods like seaweed.

Heart Disease Cardiovascular Disease
Everything about Heart Disease Cardiovascular Disease

Heart Disease Cardiovascular Disease.  In this episode of Dr. Andy’s Wellness Corner, Dr. Andy delves into one of the nation’s top killers.  Of course, that’s heart and cardiovascular disease.  In fact, Dr. Andy starts by defining these diseases.  He then goes into its prevalence both nationwide and in Washington state.  Additionally this also includes projections from the CDC as to where this disease is headed by 2030.

After an overview of some basic anatomy, Dr. Andy defines cardiovascular disease.  Understanding the anatomy is necessary to understand the nature of blood vessel problems.  This includes risk factors, common causes, and common treatments.  And of course, Dr. Andy goes into the common natural approaches to heart and vascular health as well as the enzyme nutrition approach.

Perhaps the most important thing Dr. Andy covers in this airing is the cholesterol myth.  Dr. Andy sites several large research projects that show there is no relationship between high cholesterol and heart disease.  In fact low cholesterol can cause some serious health hazards including cancer and a shorter life span according to some brand new research.  Of course Dr. Andy talks about the real problem, and why some health experts blame cholesterol.  Then Dr. Andy exposes the truth about how experts measure cholesterol, why it’s inaccurate, and how scientists make false assumptions to measure it.

Lastly, Dr. Andy explains how certain forms of heart disease can lead to heart failure.  Once that occurs he reveals the common necessary medical approach.  If you or a loved one suffers from heart disease, this is a must listen episode!

When Fish Oil is unhealthy.  In my last article, I talked about the cholesterol myth.  As a matter of fact I actually cited research showing that those with lower cholesterol have shorter life spans.  But I also promised I would get into fish oils.  Specifically when they are useful and when they are harmful.  So here it goes, as promised.

Why Fatty Acids are Beneficial

First, let’s begin by going over types of fatty acids found in fish oils.  The typical ones are omega3’s, omega 6’s and omega 9’s.  Now the first thing you need to know is regarding Omega 9’s.  Omega 9’s are non-essential.  This means your body will make them on its own.  As far as the other two are concerned, they are essential.  This means you must get them from your diet.

So what does your body actually do with fatty acids?  Under normal circumstances, your body converts them to eiconosoids through a process called the DLGA process.  In fact enzymes are required to make that conversion.  These eiconosoids are what “clean up” your blood vessels keeping them healthy.  However, several factors can prevent fatty acids from turning into eiconosoids.  And some of them are bad for your health.

How Fatty Acids can be Harmful

First of all, as you age, your DLGA process weakens just like everything else.  Additionally frequent viral infections also compromise your DLGA cycle.  However, if you consume too many carbohydrates, not only is your DLGA cycle interrupted, but the fatty acids covert into a pretty harmful substance.  When you eat too many carbs, there is an abundance of insulin in your blood.  Because of the insulin, the fatty acids you’ve eaten convert into arachadonic acid instead of eiconosoids.  This acid is responsible for inflammation and clotting.  Unfortunately, this is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.  As a result, it is crucial to make sure you take fatty acids when there are few carbs “floating around” in your system.

This is why our solution isn’t just recommending supplements.   At Redmond Ridge Nutrition & Chiropractic, specific testing leads to supporting a healthy body with specific nutrition and supplements.
