Chronic Diseases a Crisis in the U.S.

Chronic Diseases – a Crisis in the U.S. – Chronic diseases are steadily increasing in the U.S.  Sadly, experts predict that about 50% of all Americans will suffer at least one chronic disease by 2030.  Yes, you read that right about one half of all Americans will suffer at least one chronic disease by 2030.

Chronic Diseases – a Crisis in the U.S. – So what exactly is a chronic disease?  Chronic diseases are a set of long term illnesses such as heart disease, asthma, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many more.  While some state they are incurable, the CDC reports that many of these are reversible and avoidable.  But before I get into that, let me provide you with some more powerful statistics.  First of all, did you know that chronic disease is the number one cause of death in the United States?  Currently, about 133 million Americans suffer from at least one chronic disease (Rand Corp).  Secondly, chronic diseases are responsible for seven out of every 10 deaths in the U.S.  In fact, chronic disease kills more than 1.7 million Americans every year (CDC).

In addition to shortening your life, chronic diseases can be disabling and reduce your quality of life.  The risk is even greater if the disease goes undiagnosed or untreated.  In fact, did you know that every 30 doctors amputate a lower limb as a consequence of diabetes?  In addition to physical suffering, chronic diseases also play a serious economic toll on the United States. in fact, chronic diseases account for 81% of hospital admissions; 91% of all prescriptions filled; and 76% of all physician visits in the U.S (RWJF).  According to Kaiser, health care premiums for employer-sponsored family coverage have increased by more than 87% since 2000.

 Prevention is Best

While the best solution is prevention, if you catch most of these problems early enough you can reverse them.  Fortunately, the solution is the same for either.  It’s eat well, move well and think well.  After all the number one cause of chronic disease is stress.  And there are three forms of stress.  They include mechanical stress, nutritional stress and emotional stress.  Sadly, your body doesn’t know the difference between them.  As a result your body responds to each of them the same way.

Worried?  Let us Help

While I don’t diagnose or treat any disease (including chronic diseases), I can help your body work the way it’s supposed to work in a healthy way.  I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements, home exercises, chiropractic treatment, and positive thinking. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.

Are you concerned about digestive health? Do you spend hours or days at home waiting for your problems to subside? Are you missing out on work family or fun? If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). In fact did you know that both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America rely on BIA? These tests help me determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.

Chronic Disease costs the U.S. billions

Chronic Disease on the Rise:  According to the CDC, Chronic diseases are the most common health problems.  They include heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis.  However the good news is they are preventable with the proper lifestyle.

In fact, did you know that in the United States, chronic disease and conditions account for most of our nation’s health care costs?   “Over eighty-six percent of all health care spending in 2010 was for people with one or more chronic medical conditions. (CDC)”   The total costs of heart disease and stroke in 2010 were well over $315 billion. Of this amount, more than $193 billion was for direct medical costs.  That is it did not include costs for home care and rehab.  Additionally, cancer alone care cost $157 billion in 2010 dollars.

Meanwhile, diabetes cost this nation $245 billion in 2012.  This includes $176 billion in direct medical costs and $69 billion in work absence.   Sadly, the total cost of arthritis and related conditions was about $128 billion in 2003. Of this amount, nearly $81 billion was for direct medical costs and $47 billion was for indirect costs associated with lost work. Last but not least is obesity.  Obesity cost the U.S. about $147 billion in 2008. Annual medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher per person than those for people of normal weight in 2006.

Diabetic Kidney Disease and Enzymes

Diabetic Kidney Disease and Enzymes – Did you know that people with diabetes are more likely to suffer kidney disease?  When there is too much sugar in the blood stream, your kidneys work too hard trying to filter it out.  Over time, this takes its toll on your kidneys leading to disease and eventually failure.  However research shows that certain enzymes may help restore kidney health in these cases.

In fact, this research comes from the October 25 issue of Journal of Clinical Investigation.  In the study, researchers stimulated the mitochondria.  The mitochondria is essentially the “power house of the cell”.  They did this  by activating a key energy sensing enzyme called AMPK, superoxide.  When they did this, diabetic kidney disease markedly declined.  So how do you increase your AMPK levels?  You can boost beneficial AMPK activity through simple lifestyle changes.  These include weight loss and exercise.

We can Help

In fact, while I don’t treat diseases, I can support a body the works properly.  This includes support for health kidney function, sugar metabolism, and body composition.  I provide this support with a specific plan. And this plan usually includes custom dietary changes and the correct enzyme supplements. Of course I only make recommendations after scientific testing based on sound medical principles.  With over 30 years of experience, we can even help you develop an exercise program.  Of course we can also provide specific enzyme supplements to support healthy kidney function.

inflammation foods
Inflammation foods cause weight gain and many other health problems

Inflammation foods.  Because of the Standard American Diet (SAD), chronic inflammation is a growing problem in the U.S.  Why?  Because chronic inflammation can lead to a host of serious diseases if left alone.  But the good news is that many Americans just like you are becoming more and more health conscious.  As a result, you are also much more aware of the problems caused by inflammation.  So here is a list of thirteen foods you should avoid.

Inflammation Foods:

1. Vegetable oils: Vegetable oils that contain omega 6 fatty acids are notorious for inflammation.  Increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids help balance your ratio between 3’s and 6’s and support low inflammation levels.  Of course, be sure to see my prior post on how to do this PROPERLY.  (Nutrients. 2016 Mar; 8(3): 128.)

2. Dairy products:In fact many people are unaware that milk and other dairy products trigger inflammation.  It is also important to note that milk is hidden in many foods including bread, cereal, cookies and so on. Not to mention  60 percent of Americans can’t digest milk (which is genetically normal, by the way).

3. Sugar: Did you know there is tons of research out there linking sugar to inflammation, obesity and chronic diseases? Avoid table sugar and foods with added sugar.  And by the way, this includes almost all processed foods. (Mediators Inflamm. 2010; 2010: 289645)

4. Processed meat: And by the way, processed meat can also cause an increased risk of cancer. (World Health Organization)

5. Refined flour: Sadly, refined grains are extremely low in nutrients.  Not only that, but there is a strong link between them and cancer, weight gain, and chronic diseases.

6. Alcohol: It comes as no surprise that Long-term alcohol intake can cause chronic inflammation and increase risk of cancer.

7. Trans fats: Of course the media has “saturated” the market with information on trans fats.  In fact you commonly find these harmful fats in  deep fried foods, especially and fast foods. Strong research shows they are strong inflammatory agents.

More Inflammation Foods…

8. Additives: Common additives like aspartame are very strong inflammatory foods. Sodas, diet sodas, and energy drinks contain high amounts of additives.

9. Artificial sweeteners: Research shows that artificial sweeteners increase inflammation, and the risk of type 2 diabetes.  See my previous article on this.

10. Gluten: Gluten ruins gut health and promotes inflammation. Avoid foods that contain wheat.  But be extremely careful.  Many gluten free foods are high in simple carbs.  These also contribute to inflammation and type 2 diabetes.

11. Agave: While many turn to agave as a natural non sugar alternative.  But unfortunately this is a mistake.  In fact, Agave is 90 percent sugar. It has been proven to cause inflammation, fast aging, and chronic diseases.  Unfortunately it has been touted as a natural sugar alternative.  But sadly, it is pretty much just sugar itself.

12. Peanuts: Peanuts cause a strong inflammatory response in the body.  They also contain aflatoxin.  Do you know what that is?  In fact, researchers use aflatoxin to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

13. Iodized salt: In fact unrefined salt is a better choice because it contains lots of minerals. Iodized salt has been proven to cause inflammation. But make sure you get plenty of iodine from foods like seaweed.

Type 2 Diabetes becoming Deadly.  For those of you who tune into my weekly radio show, you already know that type 2 diabetes is growing at an alarming rate.  However many health care workers fail to realize that diabetes is now a leading cause of death.  Unfortunately it is also responsible for a huge spike in health care costs.

According to the New York Times, the life expectancy of Americans has declined once again last year.  And of course, this startling fact led scientists on a hunt to discover the cause(s).  On an interesting side note, one major cause seems to be drug overdose.  And I should mention these are drug overdoses of prescription medications used as directed.  But sadly this isn’t the whole story.  According to VOX, type 2 diabetes also plays a major role.   In fact there is a much stronger link between type 2 diabetes, and lethal conditions like heart disease and cancer than previously thought.

The Current Landscape

What’s even sadder is that type 2 diabetes is reversible and avoidable with the right lifestyle changes.  And guess what?  This information comes straight from the CDC.  Meanwhile, the cost of diabetes treatment continues to rise with each passing year. In fact, diabetes is now one of the most expensive diseases in the U.SOf 155 chronic conditions, diabetes is the most expensive disease costing Americans over $101.4 billion in in 2013.  As a matter of fact, in the last 20 years, the cost of insulin keeps increasing.  Now the cost is up over 450 percent. A single 30 day supply of insulin costs up to $255, compared to less than $21 in 1996.

Our Approach to Helping Your Body Work Right

Our approach to health and wellness is unique.  And no, we don’t treat type 2 diabetes.  However, we can support healthy sugar metabolism, healthy pancreatic function and many other aspects of your health.  And if these things are out of balance, they can lead to serious conditions like type 2 diabetes.  We can even help promote healthier energy levels to give you the gusto to exercise more.   We accomplish this several key ways. First we use scientific testing based on sound medical principals.  Next, we use a careful combination of dietary changes with the right enzyme supplements to help your body work the way it’s supposed to.
