Chiropractic and Stroke

Here are the facts for Chiropractic and Stroke:

Estimates by,Durrett and Carey are that stroke occurs in 1 in 300,000 to tens of millions of neck adjustments. compare this to 1 per year per 24,000 women taking oral contraceptives. Gillum et.al.

Myler compared the risk of fatal stroke after neck adjustments(0.00025%) with the same risk in the general population of the U.S. (0.00057%) This implies the risk is half as much with neck adjustments as without.

Which are the better odds?

Terrett examined the details of the “study” and found some interesting facts!!!

Journal of Neurology: Of the ten patients who suffered ischemic strokes due to “D.C. care, seven of the manipulations were performed by orthopedists, one by a physical therapist, and two by non-physician health care practitioners.

This study has more recently been disaccredited by pub med:

Conclusion from the study…  “Stroke is a very rare event in the population. The increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and PCP visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke. We found no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated chiropractic care compared to primary care.”
